I believe the birds eating the mayflies are swallows, not starlings. Swallows are the jet fighters of the bird world.

here in Nebraska we call those Barn Swallows not sure if that is correct but they definitely aren't Starlings

Doug I am totally Impressed at what you built. I am a Disabled Vet and one of my life long dreams is to get on a Boat like yours for a week. I am mobile but I move Slow. An Indian Chief named me that when I was in the Army when he saw what I did to the Command Sargent Major at Fort Hood Texas in a small Cessna 152. He saw me Dive Bomb him on Lake StillHouse and he jumped overboard. I drove for the Commanding General at the time. The Indian Chief found me at the Airport and he saw what I did from his canoe. He asked if I was flying that Airplane and I said yes. He Gave me a Headband I still have and Named me 'SLOW" Sail Low Over Water. I have been called Slow ever since my Nick Name by everyone. Now the Sargent Major called me into his office about the alleged incident and said " Well Slow looks like you Got Me Good" I knew then he knew everything. I picked up the Commanding General the next morning at his Quarters and I saluted him he Saluted back and said with a Smile, " Good Morning Slow have you ever had an invitation to an Indian Ceremony I got one and you are driving see you at 1900 hours. We are going to meet an Indian Chief and dinner. I figured I was going to Jail. Ending of the story I was inducted into the Tribe. General said you better watch you do not get your Eagle Wings clipped but you got the Sargent Major good really good. Now I want you to take me flying I never knew you were a Pilot. We had a good flight the next day. I got promoted the following month.

I watched Seeker when she was in the process of being built, but then I will wonder when I will see her travelling on the water, which should be her abode. But I thank God, I'm alive just like Doug watching her travelling from the port of Oklahoma and on her way to the High sea.

This is where we saw you. How awesome. Was a little weird to see such an amazing sailboat when we got to the ramp. Almost thought y’all were lost lol
When building this boat, no doubt you thought how great it would be then finished and get to sail but from what i can tell its 100X better than what you expected. My takeaway is it's possible to have the best years of your life in the future and in your middle and upper years and wise enough to actually enjoy each day and moment.
What you need is side & forward scanning sonar to make sure you find anything before you hit it. Running aground is not something you want to do very often.
Doug, I use SonarPhone for my depth sounder on my fishing boat. It runs on an app on my phone. And it works with Navionics. It’s a simple transducer that mounts to the boat like normal and it goes to a Wi-Fi module. You can connect wirelessly. It can record a more detailed down image and it saves it to your Navionics maps. You might check it out, maybe you can have it record on the Hot Tamale and scout out ahead and it might help you navigate the river better.

The rivers bottom are always changing , the brown color is because of the material that the water carry from one side to the other . Good winds and soft bottoms!!
I loved my steel gaffer. Only thing I found Was The continual maintenance and up keep, stopped me from doing a lot.

Doug: I run my boat with the radar on all the time. Even in clear days when I don’t “need” it.
I have the radar image overlay on the chart plotter. That way the radar can SEE the buoys before your naked eye.
If the buoy is where it “belongs” the radar (in my case purple) will be right on top of the buoy image.
If the buoy has moved, you will see the radar splotch in one location and the projected image of the buoy in another.
I do this mostly to keep my eyes trained for radar use. In case I get stuck in weather/fog.

Hello Doug. For spot depths get a 'Hondex'. Good enough for any work and trustworthy, plus no screws!! With 'Hondex' you might have to add 'portable depth sounder' or sim to your search. They have been used for years to check all sorts of depths from small boats for all sorts of purposes. Boat-mounted sounders are great but the Honex has many advantages. Taking soundings (albeit electronic) makes the user a conscious participant in the process, especailly from a small boat, canoe or padle board etc whether as a sailing tender or for diving. HTH!
When you get to the Murray lock and dam in Little Rock, look up the hill to the south and you'll see the street where I grew up!
A blast seeing those familiar spots at Callaghan's--and that WAS a damn good sunset. And it was a blast following Seeker on the move down the river in this video!
Doug, I was a surveyor for a bit, and I can tell you for sure don't always trust your gps either. You will frequently be off by 50+ ft.
It's a funny feeling hitting the bottom, your keel is bumping along the rocks, you know the channel is there and you are just on the edge of it. I think your keels will be fine Doug.

i love the videos, especially the long ones so id like to make 2 suggestions: the guy in front of the anchor winch - NEVER STAY THERE - period and 2nd, pls don't make this a habit to make fast on a reeling... this will bite you in the ass later

Navionics is pretty good out on the ocean, apparently not so much on rivers.

Doug, there should usually be a surge of higher water when a barge goes by ( an a corresponding ‘suck’ of lower water) that you might be able to use to get off when run aground.

Mount the entire sonar system to a stick that clamps to the hot Tomales...that way it can all be easily removed when not needed

What a great video. For the mounting of the sonar you could clamp a plate between your outboard bracket and transom and mount the sonar to that? I work on and build steel boats for river and canal use. Its great to see these videos.

Doug on my 6BTA I removed the fuel solenoid internal valve and disconnected the power supply to it, I replaced it with a morse cable, the reason is because a loss of power will kill the engine which could be very hazardous. Regards Doug from New Zealand.

This is cool. TWENTY-THREE years ago, I sailed UP the Mississippi River, through the White River connector, and UP the Arkansas River from Slidell, LA (across Pontchartrain from New Orleans) to Sallisaw at the same Marina you originated (at that time, it was called Applegate Marina) in 1999. I made the return trip, downriver as you are doing, two years later in 2001. I was in a 30-foot sailboat with a 51.5 ft mast which barely fit under the standard 52' bridge on the KM Navigation system and only had an 18 HP auxiliary diesel to work through the locks. Exciting memories.

By the way, expect the current to be MUCH stronger in the Mississippi. Sometimes, you may just THINK you are backing when the current is running at 6 knots. So, you have to overcome that, before you are actually backing. Just a word of caution, if you haven't been there, yet.
@@SVSeeker Also, I see you actually originated at Port of Catoosa. Before coming up the Mississippi, I actually originated just off Galveston Bay, in Texas and after I went back down, I eventually moved over to Ft Lauderdale, on the Atlantic. Lots of beautiful things to see and do in all those places.

Really enjoyed this video nice people nice times enjoy life is too short. I start sailing next year as I am having a boat built by apprentices in France at the Skol ar Mor boat building school. The boat is an American cat boat with a cuddy. I am involved in the design and planning and the sail is to de designed by a top French boat designer. I just pay for the wood and the sail. If you are interested there a videos to watch on you tube. As for SV Seeker she is now alive on the water superb.

You could put a CCTV camera on top of the mast to keep an eye on bridges, if it has PTZ control, it can be a remote crow's nest ;)
A good sonarmapper is the Garmin Striker series with active captain if you ran one on the Tamales and one on the Seeker you wold be able to share the data real time using the Garmin active captain app

Just came to mind, you once said you hoped that you'd have a diesel outboard, so you wouldn't have to carry petrol onboard. Nissan made them, I think it was 27 horsepower. Not sure, if it's too small though. And propably someone said this allready. And glue some thick plastic to the boat, and then drill the depthsensor to that.

14:12 Those Sand Hill Cranes look like the meat from the Muscovy. We have a flock of them and they sure are delicious.
Over here in Australia we call those beautiful little birds swallows. I walk my dog across this huge grass paddock area and the swallows follow us, they circle both me and the dog catching little bugs that we stir up as we walk around. It's amazing how fast they fly and how close they get to both me and the dog. At times theres dozens going crazy around us and I've noticed people filming us, its a bit of a spectacle for people who never engage with nature much

I think he was mistaken, those are called swallows here too.
The depth chart shows two feet... Those depth charts pull from user supplied data so they are updated far more often than the nav charts.

@@SVSeeker Yep - The Port of Lewiston is in Idaho. Most inland port in the west - up the Columbia/Snake river system. The trip from where you are to here would be a DOOSIE. Guess the Panama canal would be the only way. Now that would be a cool video series, taking the Seeker through the Panama canal

Not sure if it would work, but could you put the depth sounder probe into the tamale’s drop down bow?
That would keep the hole you put in up above the waterline when you aren’t using it and it’d only be a part that can come off anyhow that’s getting messed with.
