Val was a real surprise for me. I think most of us expected her to be the stereotypical popular mean girl, but Val was genuinely a nice person who looked out for Riley
Watching only the trailers i got vibes that Val was def betraying Riley at some point, but it was a nice surprise that she stayed a good friend til the end, no weird twists or anything. The friend becoming a enemy is something done millions of times in movies already.
I’m SOO happy they didn’t turn her into a mean girl or a just a straight up bully. It makes Riley’s lesson even more powerful in my opinion. Because sometimes it’s easier to walk away from bad people when they show their true colours, but it is a lot harder to swallow the fact that you can possibly let down someone who’s nice and that you look up to. Riley’s struggle is more real and speaks to me in such a personal way.
I was very relieved that Val wasn’t the “tough girl” type or “the bully,” she just loves hockey and really wants to see Riley be just as good a player as she is. We already have the bully in both Ercole from _Luca_ (who didn’t reform) and Tyler from _Turning Red_ (who did), so Val being more of the supportive big sister type to Riley was great to see.
Granted that Ercole was 16 in Luca, and Tyler was around 13-15 in Turning Red! Seeing as how Val is 18, I’d like think that she’s more matured than the both of them combined!
The first time I saw Val, I like her but I don’t trust her. But now after I saw the movie, she’s a really good friend to Riley even after Riley’s two friends Grace and Bree moved to a new high school. The ending was really happy for me because Riley now hangs out her new friends: Val and the rest of the FireHawks but still keeps in touch with her two friends: Grace and Bree. I think Inside Out 2 did a really good job of portraying the different emotions and feelings young teen girls often experience in High School. While I personally didn’t, high school is often a tough time for people because they begin to find their niches and are exposed to different groups (sports, popular, geek, etc) Here, Riley meets these new girls and wants to make a good impression and blend in, but doesn’t feel like she can be herself. So, she does exactly as they do and act as they do, ditching her own different interests and even her other friends in the process.

I was very relieved that Val wasn’t the “tough girl” type or “the bully,” she just loves hockey and really wants to see Riley be just as good a player as she is.
