A Day in the Cumberland Valley

- A trip down the Cumberland Valley in February 1991. We begin with a chase of a Conrail freight on the Hagerstown Secondary and Lurgan Branch, breaking off just north of Lees Cross Roads. Then onward to Hagerstown where we catch the Winchester & Western's Hagerstown job putting its train together amidst NS and CR power. We then follow it for a few miles south on the former Winchester Secondary, then break off and head to Gore, WV for the daily sand train to Winchester, also Alco powered. A few scenes from this chase are already on another of my videos on YT, but this is a more complete version with the lengthy stalling scene edited out. At Winchester we catch the CSX local coming in from Harpers Ferry, then watch the WW depart behind an S-6 with the most beautiful Nathan P-3 I've ever heard.
Modern steam with diesel outline at 11:09!
I love to play videos like this in the background while I'm working at my desk! Of course every once in a while I stop what I'm doing to enjoy the beautiful vintage diesels like the high-hood geep! :)
No high hood geeps in this video, just Alco RS-11's.
Thanks for posting this FM. You always have quality productions and I enjoyed the ol school alco's on this one. Oh and I will forever have a soft spot for Conrail!
Nice, gloomy days! Best weather to railfan! Whats under the blue tarp at 6:24?
Reading 2100 awaiting its restoration at the Hagerstown Roundhouse
The BEST P3 is an understatement: it is exceptionally excellent.
Another great clip! The P5 on the RS-11 sounds awesome too.
Nice video FM, hard to believe all that stuff was 25 yrs ago. S-6 #78 is probably an ex-SP switcher.
yardhog It is, ex SP 1278 with one of the prettiest P3's I've ever heard. You can spy the blanking plates for the gyralite just above the headlight.
Yeah that S6 has SP written all over it with the blanked out headlight plates and bell placement. Sounds great that's for sure. I remember when those engines were used for local switching around town and when the SW1500's replaced them.
Old SP Alco S6 with the nice P3 on the WW unit but the OC P5 on the RS11 was fantastic, especially with the run 8 working! Very nice. Regards, Jim Evans, Five Chime Consultants
Great shot of the Alco's smoking it up @11.20 !
"....the WW depart behind an S-6 with the most beautiful Nathan P-3 I've ever heard...." Sounds the same as a SP Cadillac SD-9 whistle. I think of American Graffiti when Curt is hooking the cable to the police car diff. Same I think.
I wonder what happened to the Alco S6 Switcher 78 Formerly owned by the Southern Pacific railroad it has a beautiful sounding horn I do know later on it was used as a part donor for the other Alcos Along with an additional RS11 locomotive
I believe it was scrapped sometime in the mid 90's after the RR switched fom Alcos to Geeps.
Nice video, thanks for sharing.
Wow, nice video, looks like it should snow any moment
29:28 What model Nathan horn chime is that?
"old cast" P3. For the difference in tone between "old cast" and "new cast" check out this video:

Do you know what generation of Nathan P3 horn that is?
TexasRailfan21 no, sorry
fmnut that's okay thanks anyway
What became of that steamer fm?
The Reading 2100 was rebuilt at Hagerstown. It made a test run on the Winchester line, then was moved to the W&LE at Brewster OH for possible excursion service that never panned out. It was sold to a Canadian shortline magnate for operations on his lines, and converted to oil firing (a disaster). It was then found out that it did not comply with Canadian boiler regs and would never run in Canada. It was moved to Tacoma WA and ran a few trips on Tacoma Rail's ex Milwaukee Road line, but was underpowered for the combination of grade and train length they had. It was sold in 2015 to the American Steam Railroad in Cleveland OH and is being restored again to the tune of $700,000.
+fmnut thanks for the info!. Awesome video!
Is this the rail line next to Route 11? Near the church? Looks very familiar......... from the area
The first scene is at Lighthouse Rd just south of Chambersburg where route 11 is parallel to the railroad. Not sure what church you are referring to.
fmnut ok, I run along there quite often
