You can tell the age of an SO ratchet from the serial#, first two digits are the year, second two are the week I believe? Assembly lube might be a little thick for a high tooth ratchet. You my get a lighter backdrag with a lighter oil, gun lube etc. Thanks for sharing👍🏻
Icon has out performed Matco & Mac in fail test. So that aspect alone makes it a professional tool for many reasons & people. The best overall quality, longevity, durability is going to be Snap On People in the shops are using Tekton, Capri tools, Olsa, VIM & Icon now. The name of the game is making more money for home. Everyone wants the best, thats what it comes down to
I’ve got one Icon 3/8 flex. It is floppy no matter how much I tighten the flex joint. It’s basically new, so this is a feature, not a warrantable defect. I’m donating it to tools for veterans. My Snap Ons get loose, I tighten the flex joint and they are good to go. If they no longer tighten, I get a new screw and washer from my dealer free of charge and good to go. When the new Icons come out towards the end of this year, I’ll check them out. They are “borrowing” Matco’s locking flex design, so flop not an issue. I do like a lot of the Icon tools, especially the Made in USA rebrands from US manufacturers. The Snap On copying I have mixed feelings about. They are not on the same level, but they are very decent copies.
A rachet has to be strong smooth and feel good in a person hand I own snapon rachets and a lot of other ones but I bought a gearwrench 3/8 extended rachet and for it feels the best in my hand and has worked great for five years but feel plays a part of tools
I spent a fortune on snap-on, at times I’m a little, conflicted! Yeah they make some nice tools but they’re pricing themselves out of business. For example I have the KTC roto head ratchet’s aswell as the snap-on, long handle too long KTC has more compact head and is just way better value, that’s just one example. Snap-on sell’s the idea of wealth/elitism and using there tools you kinda buy into it, reason being up until recently they didn’t have any real competitor’s, that’s rapidly changing.
I've had really good luck with the 1/4dr icon roto head ratchet. I like that alot better then the snapon equivalent personally. I'm a industrial maintenance technician and I've taken all of my Snapon ratchets home replaced them with Napa Carlyle I feel there pear head ratchets are on par with snapon in my usage of heavy hard use at least.
There's no doubt that Snap-on is top of the line. However not every tool in the box needs to be Snap-on. I preferred their ratchets, sockets and flare nut wrenches. I had a lot of Mac and Matco tools as well. The majority of Snap-on's hand tools are still made in the US whereas Mac and Matco source quite a bit of tools from Taiwan. Not that Taiwanese tools are bad but why pay made in the US prices for them when there are decent more appropriately priced tools out there. ICON tools aren't bad. I'd compare them to Craftsman. It's best to buy them on sale. They can be easily exchanged when, not if, they break. Buy what fits your needs and budget.
I got snap on, tekton, gear wrench, napa, mac, icon and a bunch of other Chinese brands. Hundreds of ratchets. Snap on are without a doubt the best ratchet on the market. I didn't like the icon at all and gonna give em to my snap on dealer to keep on the truck to show people the difference.
