The Apple Newton Message Pad was *NOT* the iPhone or even the original iPod…by ANY STRETCH OF THE MEANS…the first ever embodiment of what we’d consider to be a _SmartPhone_ combining the features of a PDA with a Cell Phone was actually the _IBM Simon_ it was released in August of 1994, with a Gameboy type monochromatic peagreen display, was capable of phone calls, fax reception, they did *NOT* have an onboard digital camera. they were sold by _Bell South_ and cost $1100 w/ no contract. I’m from New England & was involved with the inspection of Inmarsat-M Satellite Telephone Systems (the _M_ in this instance standing for _Maritime_ or _Marine,_ not Mobile) so I genuinely didn’t see these new… then years later came like the _Handspring Visor_ which had an expansion bus & expansion hardware that could give it cell phone usability, like if you watch the Mary Kate & Ashley film _New York Minute_ it shows Ashley Olsen’s character with a PDA equipped with Cellular Phone Expansion Hardware, after that came _Blackberry_ after _Blackberry_ was Touch Screens which is where we are today
Not gonna lie. You can't fault the engineers on this one. The technology just wasn't ready for the form factor. The executive Rolodex was an all around better device.
General Magic a company you probably didn't know of. Me:(watched LGR video, and multiple demo videos of their products and even a podcast):"Nope never heard of them."
no man. paypal mafia had palantir, youtube, affirm folks - and most of their tech today are in modern use. in a sense, paypal mafia folks always made what the world needed at the right time + idea + execution. general magic had the idea but no execution.
🍷 You know that's right 'cause they had to get someone else to fund their research instead of Apple funding it them selves as Steve Jobs did later and there by maintain control on the concept, development & financial aspects. Your comment just helped put the whole story in a perfect nut shell !💯👍 👏Thanks.
So this was just Quibi of the 1990s. Bunch of “tech geniuses” that thought they knew everything that people wanted but really just failed to deliver on the most basic things. No Internet in a device in 1994 is utterly ridiculous. 1994 was when huge companies like Pizza Hut, etc would advertise their website on the commercials!
I love the story, especially the vibe that came up without 'John Sculley vs Steve Jobs' thing where many people always talk about. Thanks for sharing Caya. ❤️
Doesn’t seem like the precursor to the smartphone, it seems like the precursor to the PDA, except the first PDA came out in the 80’s. Even then, the 90’s PDAs made it a point to incorporate the internet heavily into their design when it was getting bigger and Newton belly flopped. But it seems this company was software based and it was licensing it software to hardware companies, so they’re analogous to Google via Android? But I guess the PDA was a precursor to smartphones and I think it was coined by Apple when they did Newton too.
Why does this company remind me of a secretive company that Google was invested, it was a virtual 3D company of some sort, I think it was called Magic Leap
I heard a legend about Bell Labs. It was like a makerspace on steroids, build and design anything even if its not of current use as patents can be attained and later on these could be solutions to new problems. If general magic was kept as an idea office it would essentially be Google’s 2% project where you can work on anything you want and the company looks into it
I just got upgraded from the iPhone XS Max to the iPhone 13 Max Pro and aside from a slightly bigger screen I can honestly say there’s nothing that is wow-ing me.
How it all ended: you get a 800 bucks device that turns into crap in 2 years filled with apps you don't want that spy on (data mine you) and provide you with brain deed timesink
Dad met Sculley in the Pepsi Co days. It was said he was a corporate douchebag of the first order and basically annoying to be around within minute one. Time at Apple showed a complete lack of any technical bone in his body. Ousting aside, poaching Sculley was Job's worst decision ever.
Symbian (in association with Nokia, and Ericsson) were also developing smartphones in a similar timeframe (e.g. Nokia 9000 Communicator, equipped with Symbian OS for apps, building on the work done by Psion with EPOC OS), and a little later, Blackberry. Not touchscreen until later, based on a keyboard formfactor and flip
Problem was that the product was 5-10 years ahead of its time. If this had come out in the early 00s, the technology and society would have caught up to the concept.
They spent too much time dreaming and not enough time making contact with customers to understand and discover needs. I'm sure if they had done that they would have discovered that people wanted to use the internet and not otherwise. This is a classic case of credentialed people criticizing something they didn't want to understand.
Great video. You have a lot of potential in this format. I think if you slowed down a bit in your presentation, you'd have a viral channel on your hands.
The game changer was not so much the internet per se but Tim Berner Lees HTML language that brought us the World Wide Web! Everything else fell into place from there and still going...
The reason they failed is because they created a product that no one wanted. They solved a problem no one had, or even worse, that was already being solved satisfactory enough. Hype alone doesn't sell!
Idea ahead of the technology to support it, battery tech back then was far too impractical for the device they imagined and the rest of the tech too powerhungry for it to ever have a decent pocketable battery life. Also, Mogul. Mo as in Motown, gul as in ghoul.
Ugghhhhhh…. THANK YOU YT Algorithm!!! I absolutely love videos like this. Thanks for putting so much time into this, it really shows, instant sub. High fives
Very similiar to the paypal mafia but they brought value to the marketshare. They actually grew the market 10fold. Great strategy from some of the finest minds in this crumbling society!
Does anyone even remember what the internet was like in 1994? President Clinton (quickly google search) didn't even send an email until 1998. This would be like using a GameGear plugged into a wall jack to use Archie.
Great video, but go to 1:43. Look up the dictionary pronunciation for scarce. Tip: if you are using words that you don’t use often, research how to pronounce them. UA-camrs do this all the time and I almost wish they would stick to the words they know instead of mispronouncing words in their own native tongue.
General Magic should protect its intelectual property with patents. If Apple would produce something using their know how they should pay. Unfortunately many new start up put emphasis on creativity and not on doing something. I am disappointed: Steve Jobs didn't invent the smartphone?
To Prove ones ignorance and absolute lack of any historical information... Just look our for the Steve jobs fanboi who incessantly repeat that Steve jobs invented the iPhone. It's been known for the longest time that he did not even come close to inventing anything remotely close to what the iPhone ended up being. Here's proof.
My favourite part is the ending, all the amazing brands that started up from people who used to be at General Magic.
that visionary attitude from the leaders of the company probably gave them the real palpable confidence anything was indeed possible.
"General Magic" sounds like some kind of magician sheriff TV show

I had a Sony MagicLink back in ‘96. I was amazed by its functionality, I was a high schooler and it was an absolute marvel for the late nineties.
General Magic reminds me of the tv series Halt and Catch Fire, such a shame it ended at season 4
Yesss! Thought the same!
"Magic is just an unknown science"
-- My Physics Teacher
So... yea it's generally magic (a.k.a never be known)
Not gonna lie. You can't fault the engineers on this one. The technology just wasn't ready for the form factor.
The executive Rolodex was an all around better device.
Thats why they say opportunity is meeting preparing
General Magic a company you probably didn't know of.
Me:(watched LGR video, and multiple demo videos of their products and even a podcast):"Nope never heard of them."
They had a great idea that was too great for its time , so great they just focused on the idea and couldn't implement it
The ending part showing the legacy of the people who worked there was quite inspiring
General Magic Mafia > PayPal Mafia?
no man. paypal mafia had palantir, youtube, affirm folks - and most of their tech today are in modern use. in a sense, paypal mafia folks always made what the world needed at the right time + idea + execution. general magic had the idea but no execution.
Apple used General Magic as their IBM research facility.
Not a bad idea, but not a good business model.

love the set design

Really admire such people who can envision a game changing product years before it turns a reality
Why does this company remind me of a secretive company that Google was invested, it was a virtual 3D company of some sort, I think it was called Magic Leap
How do you guys find all these😂
Google
Research 😀
@11:10 quicktime player oh god the nostalgia, thank you Mr. Perlman
“first iphone in 1994” 😂
cost £700,000 😆
I heard a legend about Bell Labs. It was like a makerspace on steroids, build and design anything even if its not of current use as patents can be attained and later on these could be solutions to new problems.

"The AT&T network didn't work well"
Some things never change
Silicon Valley people and tech leaders did not look douche-ey back then.
Dad met Sculley in the Pepsi Co days. It was said he was a corporate douchebag of the first order and basically annoying to be around within minute one. Time at Apple showed a complete lack of any technical bone in his body. Ousting aside, poaching Sculley was Job's worst decision ever.
I really like the stylistic, punchy choices for the video's look.
Symbian (in association with Nokia, and Ericsson) were also developing smartphones in a similar timeframe (e.g. Nokia 9000 Communicator, equipped with Symbian OS for apps, building on the work done by Psion with EPOC OS), and a little later, Blackberry. 9:55 that’s certainly a interesting way to say Internet
Very informative video!
Love these company forensics videos. Just bought a vintage apple Newton hat off eBay 🍾
Problem was that the product was 5-10 years ahead of its time. If this had come out in the early 00s, the technology and society would have caught up to the concept.
10:47 I met Megan Sithm at a movie theater for the general magic documentary. She is a great person.
Please do a video on Sun Microsystems the creator of Java.
Great upload. Would love to hear the story of quicktime!

Fire content 🔥that red background spot melts weirdly with your red shirt tho. Made you like the hunchback of notre dame 😁
Great video. You have a lot of potential in this format. I think if you slowed down a bit in your presentation, you'd have a viral channel on your hands.
The Newton was nothing like an iPhone. I knew someone who had one. It was a garbage device.
8:50 would've been nice to find out what happened to the rabbits.
The best close in a youtube video ever! of course before the ad.
Great video!!!!
You should do the Hard Rock Theme Park. That's an interesting tale.
So basically, General Magic was Fouseytube - and their product was 'Drake showing up'
Got chills watching this.. Thx
is this a video for kids who weren't around when palm pilots were a thing? lol
This is classic information
Good vibes slide
That's why you can't just have ideas upon ideas, you need execution. And execution is easier to have, because ideas can be stolen anyway (i.e; Apple).
oh god somebody knows the song that starts around 10:44???
The game changer was not so much the internet per se but Tim Berner Lees HTML language that brought us the World Wide Web!

Sometimes you need a *leader* to win.
there were plenty od pda's around, all he did was design a pda with voice, like palm made
Idea ahead of the technology to support it, battery tech back then was far too impractical for the device they imagined and the rest of the tech too powerhungry for it to ever have a decent pocketable battery life. Also, Mogul. Mo as in Motown, gul as in ghoul.
Always presenting entertaining content!
Why does it seem that kaya is becoming sleepier day by day
The AT&T network didn’t work well….hmm…deja vu definitely.
Ugghhhhhh…. THANK YOU YT Algorithm!!! I absolutely love videos like this. Thanks for putting so much time into this, it really shows, instant sub. High fives
Great video... Incredible camera setup. Please cut your shots above waist. It was truly the only downside of the vid.
Thank you for the amazing content.. always
What happened to tech news? Kinda miss that
Please do a video on Lehman brother

A bit of a clickbait, but aren't going to dislike onyl because the video was great.
Basically too ahead of their time, not an uncommon story either.
Anyone that keeps up with tech would probably have heard of General Magic, the single most influential tech company ever
General magic mafia
Their is a saying called gain fame and go to bed.
I feel bad for all those homeless Rabbit.
No stylus 🤢🤢🤢🤮
Nope, the samrtphone was invented in 1992.
General Magic should protect its intelectual property with patents. If Apple would produce something using their know how they should pay. Unfortunately many new start up put emphasis on creativity and not on doing something. I am disappointed: Steve Jobs didn't invent the smartphone?
Watch the iphone untold story from Cold Fusion TV channel here on UA-cam. It is a gem and will give you response to that answer
Please change the thumbnail
It's the same question like would you like your company to get featured in slide bean
Total clickbait. Has nothing to do with iphone and neither does the Newton.
*If iphone would run the android i will buy one. Otherwise i will trow it to garbage😑*
To Prove ones ignorance and absolute lack of any historical information... Just look our for the Steve jobs fanboi who incessantly repeat that Steve jobs invented the iPhone.
