Imagine when I bought them originally, had to split all 4, remove the run flats. cut centers out, weld in new centers and rock rings, paint, then install the pvcs, valve stem 90* adapters, and deal with the o-ring and torque sequences, on 4 tires/wheels lol. It was a job. But they are still pretty badass wheels that wont burp air or lose a bead

    I only use Cooper-made tires.
Dick Cepek, Mickey Thompson... ect. They are soft and cushy. They mold around rocks but I've never lost a sidewall. I don't use them on the freeway, I tow the Jeep on a trailer so I don't wear them out.
They always balance well on Hunter Road Force equipment.
No shakes, ever. Nice on and off the pavement. Good sidewalls.
Won't touch BFG with a 10 foot pole. The tire compound feels too hard.

I’m not too much of a tire snob but I need something better, think I’m going to get the 38” tsl/sx from interco. Or the 39.5 iroks.
I wish I would have just bought 17” beadlocks and could get anything. I install tons of mickeys at work, and so far I rarely even have to put weights on them they are dialed. 1oz is the most I’ve had to use

Man, I know you're pain. I've deal with breaking those down a few times over the years on my rig. Those h1 wheels are great, I ran them for years on my rig with 43" sx stickies but man they're heavy. I finally switched to an aluminum single beak lock wheel and lost about 60 lbs per corner.
Also, I would be careful of running that 45 degree fitting on your valve stem adapter. Even with the rock rings, i broke 2 valve stems because with the 45 degree fitting. The stem protruded above the rock ring and would get caught on rocks or tree roots.

I'll back this up. I've had 3 sets of the mt's. Still have 2 sets.
1st set I put on my ford highboy because they were cheap like everyone else. Had them mounted on 12" wide rims at the tire shop and they hated me. They were 15 years old when I got them and already worn. the edges rounded out real fast on 12" wide rims.
2nd set where on my squarebody burb when I got it. Things were freaking bricks. They were pretty old and the sidewalls showed all the cracks when aired up but not when flat.
My 3rd set I got 5 for $150. Didn't check date codes because they were new with the little rubber things sticking out everywhere. they ended up being from 02. 15 years old. New old stock. I got them for my yj I'm building but after seeing them in action I decided to just use them as rollers for it.
I will never, ever, buy a set of these again.

I know if would be a ton of work, and possibly not even worth it, but what about cutting off the 16.5 bead seats, and welding in a set from some cheap 17” steel wheels? Then it’s still a double beadlock, but it could fit a 17” tire. In theory anyways

Sweet video bud! I have a few questions-
I'm thinking about running the baja ta tires in stock hmmwv rims on my first gen cummins.
Why did you have to do all that wheel work? To get your jeep bolt pattern?
Do you think the extra weight of a full size diesel is going to help with the flex?
Did the baja ta do better for you than the mtr's?

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad  Рік тому +1

The baja TA are way softer and better. look at the date codes dont buy them if they are 10 years old they will chunk out. I re-centered the wheels because in stock form they have way too much backspace which sucks the tires in too close for my application. I have full width truck axles, with the stock h1 wheels it made it look like I had the stock axles(too narrow).
I am switching to 39.5" IROKS very very soon

Note the 95 hummer in my pic… Ive done WAY too many of these tires. Love jeeps, on a 43 flatfender Willy’s.
Firstly on a jeep - no way I would run them. Hmmwvs/hummer the lightest version with no gear is just over 3 tons. Add a couple people, basic gear and such they are 7,000-12,000 lbs. mine as I run daily on the street (currently torn apart for engine rebuild, bigger turbo, etc) is 10,000 pounds. Wanna gues why you can’t flex the sidewalls? You are running motorcycle tires on a bicycle.
Hummer/hmmwv NEED the runflat beadlock unit because when it drops air pressure (flat or blow out) if a front wheel it almost always flips the thing because of 4 wheel independent suspension- remember 60s jeeps with it? Yeah roll monster.
I spoke to Maylon Carroll the head honcho at Goodyear for military tires some years back. TheGSA will never come back in 16.5 - they were engineered specifically for hmmwvs and that why they suck on pickups, jeeps etc. needs the weight to flatten out. The MTR will never be back. The he military sets a standard that says light & medium duty truck tires must withstand storage outside for 10 years BEFORE going into the normal 5 year service time. MTR sidewall knobbies always crack and can’t meet standard so they are goners. This leaves the MT. A good mud tire but garbage in snow, ice, or wet smooth asphalt (and as some learn wet slick rock).
The BFG wear out in half the time. Better traction in the wet stuff than the Goodyears available currently.
If you still wanna chase these ok. Look up Rubberduck4x4. Com. They make a great tool for mount and dismounting rim from tire.
Your studs are getting ruined because you don’t have the guide washers in use. Like little spacer washers that don’t let the outside rim piece touch the threads.
If having a hard time with o-ring, probably getting the wrong one. There are knock off ones on ebay often- don’t get them get the real ones- huge difference.
The nuts you are using has locking lip under the flange- don’t use those, they flare the lip where the stud goes through.
I use an impact with torque sticks to get them close when assembling then the torque wrench.
Your tire choice is horribly limited in 16.5 anymore, if I could afford the 17” rims for hummers - I would get them in a heartbeat. Instead I just have a huge spot in my workshop where I store 10 spare tires and replace them all too often.
The real bead lock/ runflats : search UA-cam for two videos. Remove by tie tire to tree and pull out runflat with truck- just don’t go crazy like guy in video. To install use a 4” square tube 4” long under a bottle jack. Pops in so easy you can’t believe it- 5 seconds.
Yes they are heavy. My 12 bolts with runflats and MT tires= 165 each.
Have fun boys and keep the shiny side up.

If you were a complete cheap ass like me, or could do it over again would you do up a set of these wheels and run a like new set of newer produced surplus baja t/a s or a set of cheap import mud tires and weld on some single bead locks?

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad  2 роки тому

If I could go back in time, I would just get a 17 inch single bead lock because then you have all the tire choices. Interco makes plenty of tires for the 16.5s. Ut they are about the only one. I have some on the way .
Option 3, there are some 17 inch double beadlocks, Hutchison rock monsters, Trail Worthy Fab makes some called double D’s that are just like these Humvee but in 17.
