    Szpilman tried freeing the German captain several times to no avail, yet spoke to the family to tell them he was a good man.

      Szpilman went to the bureaucrats and asked them to help him free Hosenfeld but they said there was nothing they could. Szpilman knew that was complete bullsh*t because one of them was friends with Stalin!

      He was Wermacht and not SS. Its widely reported much of the Wermacht hated the SS and only fought in WW2 in support of their country and not due to support for the nazi party

    The German captain helped many polish people during the war. He was arrested by the soviets and killed while possibly being tortured in 1952.

    War can not be decided by who is right only by who is left I think is a saying that works perfectly in this context, Wilhelm was just doing what he thought was his duty but hated what the Nazis stood for so as a result of this was punished for the crimes of just being in the wrong position. Spillman did try to help him but sadly couldn't and I think that broke his heart

    I'd like to see a movie based on the perspective of Wilm Hosenfeld. Everyone these days wanted to see movies from the German point of view. The phrase "History is written by the victors" isn't totally true. The Germans too have their own history to write.

    The German is supposed to be "Wilm Hosenfeld", a german officer in the Wehrmacht - he died in an internation camp for war criminials near Stalingrad, he was tortured for years and beaten to death
    he saved the lives of at least 30 polish jews, including Spzielman - even though the spoke up during his imprisonment and pledged to set him free, do soviets did not

    The thing that I speak perfect russian, german, english and romanian is just so great... i understand most of the bad guys... cause it's either the russians, the germans or romanians.     Such a good movie. It's unfortunate that many good/kind and even heroic Germans were killed along with the evil ones that deserved to be punished for their crimes. It's only know that the world is starting to know of their existence and contributions to humanity.

      So ist es! Und wie unendlich traurig die vielen vielen Opfer (Männer, Frauen, Kinder), welche nach dem Krieg in den schrecklichen Rheinwiesenlagern ein grausames Ende fanden! Schade, dass es darüber keinen Film gibt!😢

    this man was declared righteous amongst nations and a victim of the holocaust; got to be really fucking badass as a nazi for jewish people to recognize you as a victim of the holocaust. RIP. Saved many many people from a horrible fate, and we will never know how many.
