Szpilman tried freeing the German captain several times to no avail, yet spoke to the family to tell them he was a good man.
Szpilman went to the bureaucrats and asked them to help him free Hosenfeld but they said there was nothing they could. Szpilman knew that was complete bullsh*t because one of them was friends with Stalin!
Captain Hosenfeld actually saved countless people during the war. If only he had been captured by the Allies, he may have survived.
Yes, over 60 at least.

Sucks Wilhelm was killed for being a nazi when he clearly wasnt a true nazi and just a man stuck in a uniform he shouldn’t have been wearing
He was Wermacht and not SS. Its widely reported much of the Wermacht hated the SS and only fought in WW2 in support of their country and not due to support for the nazi party

War can not be decided by who is right only by who is left I think is a saying that works perfectly in this context, Wilhelm was just doing what he thought was his duty but hated what the Nazis stood for so as a result of this was punished for the crimes of just being in the wrong position. Spillman did try to help him but sadly couldn't and I think that broke his heart
Long live Hosenfeld 😢❤
Rest in love for hosenfeld captain thanks to Thomas Kretschmann your acting here make me feel like I saw real hosenfeld. I in love with Thomas Kretschmann starting from this movie then continue with all his movies
I'd like to see a movie based on the perspective of Wilm Hosenfeld. Everyone these days wanted to see movies from the German point of view. The phrase "History is written by the victors" isn't totally true. The Germans too have their own history to write.
The meaning behind that phrase is that history is biased towards the wining side, not that losers don't get to write history.
Most of what we know about the Eastern Front is from German sources and officers, so they were losers writing history.

True, but he would probably die first from the cold if he didn't have it tho
The German is supposed to be "Wilm Hosenfeld", a german officer in the Wehrmacht - he died in an internation camp for war criminials near Stalingrad, he was tortured for years and beaten to death
he saved the lives of at least 30 polish jews, including Spzielman - even though the spoke up during his imprisonment and pledged to set him free, do soviets did not
