  • If you've always dismissed the Chevy Corvette, convertible in particular, as a mid-life desperation machine this might be hard to accept but the C7 Corvette is really, really good. KBB's Micah Muzio comes to grips with this new reality as he drives the Corvette Stingray Convertible in and around Palm Springs.

    I think it looks better then most of Ferraries! And most important one of the few supercars with manual gearbox left!!! Well done!

    • @coureurdebois
      @coureurdebois 10 років тому +4

      well technically the corvette c7 base is not a supercar, but the z06 is a supercar and one of the sexiest ones i have seen in a long time. plus i cant wait to see the zr1 maybe might become a hypercar? : )

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB 10 років тому

      well... what is the definition for supercar?
      I think near 500 bhp and 3.8 sec for 0-60 is the supercars territory :)

    • @coureurdebois
      @coureurdebois 10 років тому +2

      benzfen
      PRICE :(must be more expensive than your average high end sports cars)
      EXCLUSIVITY :(less than average production numbers around 10,000-less)
      STYLING: (exotic styling)
      PERFORMANCE: (must be higher than your average high end sports cars EG.(camaro z28, Shelby GT500, jaguar F type, mercedes c class, ect) unfortunately its not dramatically higher performance than these.
      while handling is on par with supercar exotics it still lacks proper "grunt" to compete which is why the new Z06 is most definitely a SUPERCAR KILLER.
      here is a example
      last generation corvette base was a "high end sports car" while the ZR1 was a SUPERCAR because it had all of those attributes, around 8,000 were built, higher price, SUPERCAR perfromance, and styling / excusticty.
      hope this helps : )

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB 10 років тому

      justin bouche You name it "EXOTIC SUPERCARS" - All attributes gived above (price exclusivity etc.) are for the real exotics supercars.
      In my opinion all the "regular" supercar needs is performance and this one have it.

    • @coureurdebois
      @coureurdebois 10 років тому +1

      if all supercars needed was performance then you would be including the Z28, shelby GT500, jaguar f type, maserati granturismo mc, lotus evora, and many many more that are simply not supercars they just have certain "performance" high points.
      i myself own a 95 SS (and a 88 vette in europe to!) with a turbo and i am putting very close to same power at wheels as this corvette is (does that mean i have a supercar?) no of course not.
      GM's 1st supercar was the C6 corvette ZR1 which produced a little over 8,000 UNITS about same number as Ferrari 458 or lamborghini murcielago.
      the C7 base is not exclusive, its not priced as such, and it lacks TRUE supercar performance. 0-60 should be 3.5 and under 1/4 mile should be under 11.5 seconds, top speed MUST be 195+ handling must be world class leading (which actually is in the corvette C7).... that is why its not a supercar.

    Funny how this guy and maybe some American's view the Corvette..In Europe and the rest of the world the Corvette is a dream car with looks and performance to die for. I know many young people see it as their super car. Maybe more middle age people have bought it before, but that's because like many sports cars they are expensive (especially in Europe) to own and run and you have to wait till you can afford it. Like Porsches and Lambos, Ferraris etc. you don't see many young people in them...so i don't really get the point this guy is making! Brilliant car though! A coupe in red with the red interior (but with black seats and red piping) which i haven't seen would be my choice.

    so performance difference between a convertible and a coupe? coupe a tiny faster? any numbers yet?

    • @etmichel
      @etmichel 9 років тому

      From what I have seen they are pretty much identical, in some tests the convertible actually had better numbers than the coupe. With the top in place the couple will ultimately be somewhat stiffer, so if you planning a lot of track time/modifications, and ultimate performance is important to you, then the coupe is still the better option. However, it seems for stock street use with occasional hot laps, the performance penalty for the convertible is practically none existent. So it seems the real choice is over style, cost, and if convienent open air motoring is important to you.

    • @okaythen001
      @okaythen001 9 років тому

      etmichel
      very interesting. people would want the vert then. I guess it's a little more expensive than coupe? any idea how much? nice to have the top down once awhile!!! I saw the z06 vert in person at sema, with the top up I don't like how it looks though, the vinyl? top. vert is nice to have top down once awhile, but coupe looks much better. also they say auto z06 is faster than manual? is that right? and manual feels very "notchy"? man even if it's notchy you would still want manual no? I think most people do, with auto it's just not as much fun

    • @etmichel
      @etmichel 9 років тому

      okaythen001 Again I think it is a matter of style preference and how you plan to use it. Also the hatch back provides more storage room than the convertible trunk, that could be a factor for some. I believe the convertible is $3-4 K more than the coupe. The video says the convertible top can be raised or lowered at speeds below 35 MPH so that is very convienient.

    There's two things Chevrolet has got to let go of and remove from the next car. First is the fiberglass body. There is a reason people walk up to the car and press on it's body just to see it flex. Get rid of the fiberglass and go with an aluminum or carbon fiber body panels The second thing they've got to get rid of is the leaf spring nonsense for the rear suspension. Yes, this car is vastly improved in every way over the previous models, but it would be eve better with a double wishbone or multi-link suspension in the rear.
    Other than that, great job Chevrolet.

    The success of the c7 is not only due to price its the simple fact that beyond all reasoning someone at GM finally got it!, the simple fact that A. A supercar can actually be created at the price point of a normal sports car, what moron made the rule that it couldnt be done. B. Its far cheaper to build a car the rite way with high quality material cutting cost by being very efficient, rather than finding cheap solutions that would ultimately lower the overall quality of the end product and hurt sales still only saving a minimum overall. Porsche has been the master of that formula for years. NO CHEAP PLASTICS. simple. C. Design for today and not 1960's stop trying to please 60's generation. sorry old folks but our products have been sucking for decades because of over glorification of an era that actually wasnt that great auto-manufacturing wise. They finally stoped with oblong shapes, terrible proportions, lack of quality control and simply bad taste. the C7 is by far GM's greatest product.

    • @robertnicholls9917
      @robertnicholls9917 9 років тому +1

      Great analysis!
      GM finally got it! Marketing and sales had too much influence on design at GM. Sometimes the cost cutting measures end up costing companies more long term. These departments always hire the most mentally lazy people for some reason, no vision.
      There seems to be more of a streamlined continuity between teams now. The Corvette approach appears to have been utilized by all the brands, especially the trucks, which have evolved quite nicely.

What is the logic...The coupe allows you to manual control the heater when the roof has been removed. Can't believe they increased the price of this car $2,000 in March, and $1,400 on the Z51 package. PLUS, a 1% price increase on the 2015 stingray. GM is getting too greedy. Also, they're too cheap to do a recall on their chevy cobalt for their defective ignition switch resulting in at least a dozen death. Terrible company.

    • @vernonprice5986
      @vernonprice5986 9 років тому +1

      It's not a flat price increase, they included more with the Z51 package - like the performance exhaust for example, which is now standard as part of the Z51 package for the 2015 model. In 2014 that was a $1000+ option, but they only increased the Z51 package price by $700 for 2015 so they actually REDUCED the price. And as if that weren't enough, the navigation option also includes the PDR for 2015, which the 2014 models didn't have. You ARE getting more stuff for your money now.

      I sure hope so when they cost twice as much, although they don't seem to do all that better around a track

    It may be good but it will never catch on in europe for 2 main reasons
    1)The brand name and horrible quality history
    2)It is american and among supercar owners it is common practice to dismiss them.
    I may not like it but hey the exhaust is pretty sweet.

      My dad owns a shop and the corvettes that come in are rarely if ever have issues, and even if there are the parts aren't ridiculous.
      Meanwhile every european POS needs everything under the sun, the only thing they don't do is rot out in most cases, which coming from the salt belt is impressive, but when plugs, wires, etc are more expensive from the factory for a 4 cyl eurotrash car, than it is to get factory, plugs, wires, etc for a vette by more than twice as much then you have more $ than brains if that equates in your book. Just becuase something is inexpensive doesn't mean it's cheap,
      And yeah they dismiss them all day long, but despite stricter emissions regulation for the most part, they still out perform the European cars.
      Then again the only thing I hear euro car owners talk about is the nice sounds their doors make when they close them, and nice interior, as they are paying twice as much for parts that last just as long or even less.

    The Corvette always strikes me as fragile and high maintenance... like the old men who buy them.
