I've watched all 7, and will watch #8. Thoroughly enjoy the series. Among other things, the master's dynamism is great in many ways, not least its inclusiveness, passion for art, and non-sappy enthusiasm with the students. He scores an A+ in each episode.
Cheryl S. These are interesting shows. Just can't imagine painting these in acrylics. Also using the lubricant in the paint instead of something made for acrylics would that cause problems with the paint holding up over time? Wish I could figure out why I can't post a comment I can only reply to another comments.
Art lesson, history lesson, technique lesson, correction of piece lesson and a good example of coaching, not to mention well written, well produced and well performed. Well done all the way around. I don't know how I could have missed this excellent program for so many years.
This is absolutely a good example to show painting, he made them step out of their comfort zone and paint something they are not used to paint, the end result is pretty much irrelevant in this show, it's more about the happiness that painting brings rather then making a masterpiece. It's not ment as a tutorial for the viewers nor is it a competition to show who's the better painter, this is ment to inspire those who watch it and that it does.
Yes it's more of a study, rather than tutorial. He does a really good job of pushing the students to get into the mind of the original artist. Such a cool series.
That looked like the most testing class yet. And I think they all did well considering Renoir's technique is so subtle and none of them had done anything like it before. It shows what a good teacher can do in bringing out the best in a pupil and suprising them with their own abilities. All of them were proud of their achievements which is great. 😊
It wasn't so successful when three others tried a Monet-type of painting and had to choose themselves what to paint. This Renoir thing was ready-made. The students just had to apply what clumsy John said and showed to them.
Bravo! John Myatt! You are a super teacher. I've watched Cezanne and Hopper, but Renoir is the toughest so far. And all your students have done well. Bravo!
Amazing study. Seeing how great the masters are be it painting or photography can only be seen when one tries it ones self. If one succeeds in any medium it becomes a delight and a thing of beauty forever. The thought such a thing may survive decades or centuries is motivation for the work.
Iam so happy I found this show. The concept of taking the 3 people, with experience or not and having them copy a painting is unique, educational , and entertaining. I paint in oils and can learn alot. I find his manor and voice relaxing as well. Thank you.
Everyone should at least try the old masters way of creating the values as underpainting as Christine did, then glaze the final color over it. I underpaint the entire canvas in a color which is the predominant light of the moment- often with Siena. The result is a color that disappears and reappears throughout the final product. This technique was a real breakthrough for me as an intermediate artist.
I did art modeling for U.C.L.A. off and on for 30 years. Also Barnsdall Art Center and Hollywood Art school. I would do yogic poses sometimes which some of the students love. I am also an "artist" in the old fashioned way (I like doing faces and figures). If a creepy old teacher ever touched me with a tiny brush I would have punched him in the nose. Bloody good show, still...I don't trust people who insist on showing their teeth.
Short-haired girl is adorable and quite stunning. She has real star quality as well. 26:00 is where she shines. She could Also make millions doing ASMR. Her voice and cadence are ever relaxing.
Lovely session John...my late brother had your skill of copying..your generous crit shows your levels of understanding...I see sows ear, yet you can still find silk.
For those of you who went #@?! like me, either he misspoke or he's got the wrong definition of opaque. Using an extender that thins out your paint will cause it to become LESS opaque, and more transparent or translucent. That should have been caught and fixed in post production with a voice over. These terms are important, and basic mistakes like this (and a few others I've bitten my tongue over) are a disservice to the brilliant concept of the show and those who are learning from this program as well. (Here's the soapbox back, I'm done.)
I loved the hint about KY... Never thought of using it that way but it works well and it's a darn sight less expensive than the "pro art" stuff. Other people use it? Well yeah. I put it on my hands before I work with fiberglass. It fills the pores so you get the 'itchies." I also use it to detail shine the rubber items on my classic auto. C'mon people... must your minds always head to the gutter? Blimey!
Forger guy is enthusiastic and people mistake him for being rude but that is just his great positive energy being mistaken. Black dude - like a dark cloud and so miserable. American girl accused of being a lesbian on here should make a decent high-end model and has fame ahead of her. Old chick is the only one who can realistically draw/paint and she is just sweet, down to earth and talented too.
You forgot to describe the centrepiece, the model. Wasn't she lovely and so forgiving vis-à-vis the old insensitive sensualist? And rude he was: plumpness, she is definitely a plump young woman (the model), not the words of a decent man. And yes, the old chick did great.
I agree with Scootsey. Drying fast is a good thing. When you go to put color on top of color when you work with oils you're just pushing the paint around, oils are far too plyable.
I agree, very good looking. Nice bone structure and beautiful skin. These comments about her being lesbian. So stupid, Who cares! Whether she is gay or not is irrelevant, we are talking about her beauty, not her sexual orientation. And for the record You can have very short hair and not be lesbian. Lol.
When the designer called Renior "classic", I felt a shock because I don't believe she actually knows the difference between classic and modern. But, to paint like Renior is a good goal to accomplish.
Excellent job teaching Renoir appreciation, if nothing else! I wonder if the mentor used acrylics to forge the masters. I've no problem with the lub jelly holding or not holding ... since acrylics have their own quirky longevity. I'd love to see the forger imitate a Renoir and teach us. Renoir is one of my favs for portraits and figures. I study Renoir repeatedly but never come near his excellence.
His actions at 12:25 onwards would prevent this episode from ever being shown on television now. The lecherous way he touches her body, without even asking permission, crosses a line. The things he then says - telling the students to make love to her with paint - would also get this programme banned from major tv stations. The model is there to do a job of work: modelling, not to be treated or talked of as a sex object.
Half the people at the royal college of art these days cant paint anyway. Im in my second year there and 50% of other painting students can only do pollock
Taking measurements isn't going to help if you need to fill the canvas with the model, it's going to make the model as big as she appears to where he's standing on the canvas. Masters are masters because they bend rules or "cheat".
Doesn't make much sense to me, if they have to use gel to keep it open longer. They might as well have used oils and an alkyd medium. Recreating these techniques in oils is hard enough. Acrylics require a very different approach.
What the heck was the puffing blowing thing he did when he was helping Christine with the glazing. Near the end of the video around the 22 minute mark. He didn't have to make that sound. It was So inappropriate. Everything else he was saying in the video about eroticism and sensuality, I understand that aspect And I suppose it is relevant to the art in question but then he went a bit pervy, creepy and sexual With making the sound with his mouth. He even apologised for doing it. Ugh.
Good quality oils go a long way, and they're not that expensive. I doubt they'd be worried about oil paint breaking their budget in a show like this, even if they were stocking up on Old Holland. Mixing is the same for oils and acrylics, pigment is pigment, the main difference is the drying time. This really makes no sense to me.
I think it's good for him to show that you can make appealing paintings not only in oils but also in acrylics. I guess more people use acrylics these days than oils. Me too, among other stuff.
that was totally inappropriate of him 'tickling' the model with a brush. you just dont do that to a model if you are professional...so disrespectful. and as for him going on about lubricant..well what a wanker he is. other than those foix pas's (spelling) i think it is an interesting series.
I don't think he was actually touching the model. I think he was just indicating the direction of the strokes. I didn't feel he was going on about the lubricant, the only thing he said about it was that it was used by doctors. I actually thought that was brilliant. Fast drying acrylics are such a pain, and that lubricant is much cheaper than acrylic extenders.
@O Malley I think he said somewhere in last episode that he creates copies and sells it as duplicate and not as original which he used to do in past but whatever you said is also very much true
He's really gotta learn how to talk about models with more consideration. "Make love to her" "make her eyelashes more sexy" ....Those aren't terms for learning. Sexy is subjective so it's better to use descriptive terms that are less subjective like longer, fuller, thinner, more round etc... The whole stroking the canvas thing is so uncomfortable. I would not want to be a woman in that class. The connection between model and artist is something sensual for sure, but in my opinion, its on another level from sex. The relationship is the same intimacy of knowing anothers body well without touching. But repeatedly saying "stroke it!" and "make love to her" .....Just no.
He clarified the sexual overtones of his comments when he said "make love with a paintbrush." It's so different from actual sex it's ridiculous. Women look to be insulted now once sex is introduced into the conversation in any way. I heard what he said in the actual way he said it and didn't read any insult into it at all. He's teaching how to paint flesh for heaven's sake.
Joan Williamson so what do you think about him doing the huffing puffing sound around the 22 minute mark when he was helping Christine With the glazing. Please tell me if that was appropriate. He even apologised, knowing it was a sexual reference.
I think he’s hitting on the blond. And he sounded like Donald Duck trying to separate sensuality from pornography. Without the third leg of spirituality the odds of it being just plain old porn go up dramatically.
I press a 'dislike'!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't watch this video, evryone. sexual immorallity or abuse. anyone who watch this must cover ur eye n turn it to mute. I REPEAT, NEVER WATCH THIS!
Friend had an egg bound chicken and called for advice. I told her to use some lubricant jelly and try to ease the egg out - She asked if she could use "Astro-glide". TMI.
OutdoorLifeFamily Lol what a dumb thing to say. Men are desperate horndogs, I doubt she's having any problems. Just because you're a bit precious about it doesn't mean too many other men have problems with this 😂
OutdoorLife Family That is very rude. And you are wrong all the way. And Ann Nee Not all men are desperate homdogs. ***** That's probably why I thought it was a mess in my earlier comment because it was awkward and tight and not loose which is a pre-requisite for painting the impressionist style.
Agreed. Vine coal (my choice) or prick & pounce, I would have thought. To the person who thinks charcoal is messy and pencil is better for it's indelibility... you haven't had much, if any time in the studio.
I totally disagree. You can paint over any mistakes in acrylic. The quick drying is wonderful. There are mediums that help those who prefer slower drying. Acryics are instant gratification. Your painting is ready to hang 24 hours after completion. Give them another try sometime. You may be surprised
I would like to see one done on a watercolor artist.. But you do learn a lot about art here, despite what medium you paint in.. I was impressed by his lubricant trick and it was funny that he applied it to this show. He got way to close to the model though.
John is a fantastic teacher. It is hard not to take the brush and DO what you are asking the student to do. Drawing it out of the student is an art in itself. All three of them were able to create a recognizable rendition of the model, even though none of them were figuratively painters.🖤🇨🇦
This is the first episode I'm going to stop watching and just skip. That model is a professional human being there to help you be a professional human being. John's treatment of her and how he talks about her, as if she's nothing more than an object who doesn't have ears and feelings and dignity, is disgusting.
I've watched all 7, and will watch #8. Thoroughly enjoy the series. Among other things, the master's dynamism is great in many ways, not least its inclusiveness, passion for art, and non-sappy enthusiasm with the students. He scores an A+ in each episode.

'lubricating jelly.. used by doctors and... other kinds of people'
sooo would that mean that you could use acrylic gel medium as a good water based uhm lubricating jelly? :D
wetter for longer
Lol
Veterinarians!
It's epic for getting a stubborn lamb out of a ewe.
Always learning something new!
K-Y Jelly for a sensual painting. how appropriate :)
Very inspirational - I admire the courage to take on a Renoir! Well done you guys!
I adore this video! Renoir is one lf my favourite painters of all time. Thank you so much! The video comforted me too.
An informative show, engaging and motivating. My year 10 class really enjoyed this extra learning aid, as they worked on their own painting projects.
The greatest classes of Art
Bravo! John Myatt! You are a super teacher. I've watched Cezanne and Hopper, but Renoir is the toughest so far. And all your students have done well. Bravo!

I love this french painter very much.

good show, more should be produced
I really enjoyed this - your passion, your way of talking about sensuality and caressing the skin - and the glazing - very beautiful
I believe acrylics were used for the show so that the paintings would dry faster and could be framed and shown at the end
And glazing. Oils can take weeks between the first layer and the glazing layer.
Great show! I enjoying seeing them paint.

Yes, he gets rather too touchy-feely with the model. Totally inappropriate.
I wondered if she got paid extra for being painted while being painted.
Short-haired girl is adorable and quite stunning. She has real star quality as well. 26:00 is where she shines. She could Also make millions doing ASMR. Her voice and cadence are ever relaxing.
Hope for you she will read your excited comment. Haha. Honestly, I'd prefer the model. She will be still fine when 20 years older.
Lovely session John...my late brother had your skill of copying..your generous crit shows your levels of understanding...I see sows ear, yet you can still find silk.
They both have pros and cons. It just depends on the person and what suits them best.
Technic of these great artist is always intriguing, ready to try a Renoir myself.

the background music sounds like SIMS 4 music, not complaining though
this is an excellent series

very beautiful video. I love art and will try this technique. Renoir is the best of all painters ..
I'd like to paint Denyse Phenix in the style of Renoir... (By the way, Renoir has died some years ago.)
Thanks for upload!
I agree with Scootsey. Drying fast is a good thing. When you go to put color on top of color when you work with oils you're just pushing the paint around, oils are far too plyable.

LOL it's like a Carry On film.
“A little bit of...extender” he didn’t want to say lube again
How gorgeous is the girl with the short hair?!
A. She is indeed beautiful, such a pretty smile also. They should have painted her (no disrespect to the model in the chair of course).
The looks of the students are totally out of subject as regards this video.
I agree, very good looking. Nice bone structure and beautiful skin.
These comments about her being lesbian. So stupid, Who cares!

@EatPlums Hey, I'm a girl who likes girls, I'll take her in a heartbeat. XD
Yes, the model was pretty, but she is truly beautiful. :3
Slow-dri blending medium it helps enhance color blending also keeps similar tone. Expect when acrylic darks when dry.
The short haired girl is beautiful
The blonde lady’s was the best
LOLD at the part with the lubricant
This was awesome I will continue to watch :)
This show should go back.on the air...a neat idea to help artists.........seems a low production cost.!....a reset !!
When the designer called Renior "classic", I felt a shock because I don't believe she actually knows the difference between classic and modern. But, to paint like Renior is a good goal to accomplish.

does this guy ever change his outfit?
Excellent job teaching Renoir appreciation, if nothing else! I wonder if the mentor used acrylics to forge the masters. Renoir is one of my favs for portraits and figures. I study Renoir repeatedly but never come near his excellence.
He mostly used regular house paints which he got from a builder's supply place on the cheap. They would be water based acrylics generally.
But why do the use such small brushes or rather finishing brushes ?
Agree..for that kind of loose effect I would go for large brushes....
Because that's what Renoir did. It's a habit he got from working in a ceramics painting factory.
How warm do they keep that room?
is this simon quinlank, king of ALL hobbies?
Loves that K-Y jelly
What would be the point of teaching 3 people from the Royal Academy? This show is meant to expose new artist to new styles.
Half the people at the royal college of art these days cant paint anyway. Im in my second year there and 50% of other painting students can only do pollock

Doesn't make much sense to me, if they have to use gel to keep it open longer. They might as well have used oils and an alkyd medium. Recreating these techniques in oils is hard enough. Acrylics require a very different approach.

Omg!
This guy is so inappropriate to touch model and use terms like eroticism make love sensual . Took advantage of model unbelievable what a pig!
I think the dudes painting was kind of a mess imo.
not the easiest of impressionists to pick :D
I thought they all did a good job, although they all added a few pounds to the model.
ky in housepaint this guy is king of the grifters lol
Damn!
damnn short hair chick is hot
Good quality oils go a long way, and they're not that expensive. I doubt they'd be worried about oil paint breaking their budget in a show like this, even if they were stocking up on Old Holland. Comon, if people are not used to oils, it can get very messy, in any case he needs the paintings to dry.
I think it's good for him to show that you can make appealing paintings not only in oils but also in acrylics. I guess more people use acrylics these days than oils. Me too, among other stuff.
Nah Volump is still great. All women are hot.
I don’t think he actually had that lube in his pocket for their painting
that was totally inappropriate of him 'tickling' the model with a brush. you just dont do that to a model if you are professional...so disrespectful. and as for him going on about lubricant..well what a wanker he is. other than those foix pas's (spelling) i think it is an interesting series.

He even apologised, knowing it was a sexual reference.
shut up.
The model was much more of a young girl out of shape than the original model but I loved all 3 of the studies.
Renoir did not flatter the model in that painting, it is a poorly drawn face. the most over rated artist of his era. ok for chocolate box lids
johnny shep How do you know? Did you see the Model first hand? Maybe he *did* flatter her lol.
just an opinion, so, maybe he did ?? : )
+Pube the 4 words begin with letter P.
the proletariats will never understand Renoir
At first I agreed with johnny shep, but I really gained an appreciation for the Renoir from this episode
spanish plis plis plis plis please please please please please please please please
He is hitting on that poor model a little too hard for my personal liking.
no body is hitting on that fat chick. did you see those roles
I think he’s hitting on the blond. And he sounded like Donald Duck trying to separate sensuality from pornography. Without the third leg of spirituality the odds of it being just plain old porn go up dramatically.
This whole show made me uncomfortable
waste of money
I press a 'dislike'!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't watch this video, evryone. sexual immorallity or abuse. anyone who watch this must cover ur eye n turn it to mute. I REPEAT, NEVER WATCH THIS!

How sensitive can one be ? Lol

I laughed so hard.

I'm sure the model really appreciated being sensually tickled by his paintbrush while she's trying to pose.

Man he was so awkward with the model
***** Really! I thought he was being rather sexy with that paintbrush at around 12:20!
***** That's probably why I thought it was a mess in my earlier comment because it was awkward and tight and not loose which is a pre-requisite for painting the impressionist style.
i can't believe they use pencils instead of charcoal!
Why? Charcoal is more dirty and the lines less permanent than pencil.
Lol what a big problem.
Agreed. Vine coal (my choice) or prick & pounce, I would have thought. To the person who thinks charcoal is messy and pencil is better for it's indelibility... you haven't had much, if any time in the studio.

It dries quicker which is better for the show, especially when the piece must be displayed in a frame.
John is a fantastic teacher. It is hard not to take the brush and DO what you are asking the student to do. Drawing it out of the student is an art in itself. All three of them were able to create a recognizable rendition of the model, even though none of them were figuratively painters.🖤🇨🇦
Only show that will teach how to do a shank AND a Renoir... =)
This is the first episode I'm going to stop watching and just skip. That model is a professional human being there to help you be a professional human being. John's treatment of her and how he talks about her, as if she's nothing more than an object who doesn't have ears and feelings and dignity, is disgusting.
LOL I'd fail this challenge so hard.....
Thanks for all your videos briliant!
I wonder how many hours they have to paint?
Why don’t so many of his students not know these famous artists?
Plump...great word
bastard camerawork at 20:35. totally wrong angle
Very good instructor... one wishes that you do it while giving your comments and practical instructions... many thanks..
I can learn a huge amount AND have fun watching these videos; thats what excellent teaching and entertainment is all about.....for me
Wow. This is absolutely fascinating and so useful and helpful to me. It's also very inspiring. Thank you so much for uploading:).
As I understand, the layering of diluted color through glazing creates the luminous look of skin.
I have only ever seen Myatt use acrylics, on his other shows maybe he is just partial to them.
