- The Mediterranean is once again a hotspot for illegal crossings and people smugglers.
The focus is on Lampedusa, an island that belongs to Italy but is closer to North Africa.
Thousands have been arriving there in small boats - often at risk of drowning.
BBC Newsnight were the first international journalists inside the island’s migrant camp since the recent surge in arrivals.
Newsnight's International Correspondent Emir Nader reports from Lampedusa.

The leaders(or lack there of) in the countries these ppl are coming from aren’t doing anything to change the ppl lives for the better, then they get on their smart phones with internet access and see how much better life LOOKS in western countries and tell themselves that is what they want and they are hellbent on getting to their destination by any means necessary. These ppl would rather risk death on the journey than to stay home and organize and fight to make their own countries better. That's why migrants destroy their documents. If they give a false name and false country of birth, the government of their true country of origin will not recognise them as being a citizen and refuse to take them back. The country pertaining to the false identity will also refuse them because they are not from there. Brilliant scam! Whatever the reason why these thousands of people are migrating to another country, the welcoming country should put regulations into place to preserve social fabric. An easy thing to grasp: too many at a time. And they keep coming. EU is reluctant to accept migrants and thinking this will one day end is pure imagination. Sometimes I wonder, is the all thing planned? Are we really going to do something about it? Mass immigration will most certainly impact our culture, and in such great numbers it is already impacting society. Is this the way to go? Don't think so. Too many at a time!

@@denkendannhandeln genuine refugees cannot currently do that. I say open up legitimate routes for refugees to have permission prior to entering the UK. And closing completely the right to submit an asylum claim after entering the uk illegally … extending it to rejecting any leave to remain for anyone entering without permission…. This is how to stop it. But do not abolish GC. Maybe it needs revising
@@Ayat78 The legitimate routes are and always were open. Those people just have no chance to get a humanitarian visa because they absolutely have no cause. They are not persecuted and flee no war zone. France is not a war zone, as far as I am informed.
The Geneva convention has to be abolished as soon as possible, because it is abused by every nation with a bulge of uneducated youth. And this problem will get bigger. In the next 20 years half a billion of Africans will come of age with no perspectives. So where will they head?
