OMG this was so refreshing! I grew up reading that british windsufing magazine and every single review you could tell they were absolutely terrified of offending any company. Literally every product was amazing in nearly every way, you had to interpret each review like it was written in some unknown language I call Obsequiese. I love your willingness to say what was bad. (Although even you had to be super polite.... Understandable given you're looking for a sponsor. But that makes your honesty even more impressive) More please 🙌
The disadvantage of reviews in magazines is that they are financially dependent on advertising revenues from the brands they test. Well, then you can't judge freely and honestly. Ricardo did well but of course he is not linked to a brand now and then that is possible. Maybe also a board test?!
Thank you - exactly the approach that was always missing. Maybe the next one could focus on the current top wave-boards - not only of the main brands, but also strong customs on the tour like BRUCH-Boards and FLIKKA. And don't hold back...
Thanks for the honesty and clarity of the explanations Ricardo. Finally a real test without bias 👌 I wish you all the best for the future from France 🙏
Super nice to have a refreshing take from your POV. Sails are indeed different and sailors vary in skills, spots and weight. Good stuff. Carry on Ricardo. Good luck with sponsor search and all the best time enjoying being a dad. It’s better than a push forward 😅
Very useful, thanks. Most revealing for me is your making the link between the size/weight of the riders who influence the design of a sail and its handling characteristics. I hadn't considered this before. For me your opinion does count very much Ricardo, because of how you sail, but please consider that we live in a dishonest world where those who tell the truth rarely get thanked for it.
Honest reviews are one of the rarest things on YT, or on the internet in general. Not just for windsurfing, for any subject, so a big THANK YOU. Subscribed and eagerly awaiting for a boards review (or opinion on more niche sail brands). Booms would also be good, as they are a critical part of control and maneuverability.
I have always used either Naish or Gaastra sails; however, I was positively surprised with my first 2020 Neil Pryde Speedster 8.2 sail. So well balanced, exellent topspeed and a wider wind range that I have never experienced before. Beside that, I especially love the (fighter jet) top-wing design!. Dont know why other sailmakers "cut" the top slightly off. Definately not my last sail from Neil Pryde!!!.
You’re in a good position to test and tell us what works & what doesn’t… for decades I’ve bought kit which I didn’t like. I was told by others Yeah it’s great only to find out it didn’t work for me… So please produce more like this… you could make something out of this type of honest testing…. You have the skills to understand the kit, 90% of testers aren’t good sailors…. Thanks
It would be interesting to have you go to a test center and try some boards and any other important sails you missed. Thanks for the honest talk. Good luck with the tour!
Thank you very much for this insightful information!! Never knew there could be such differences between sails, good luck finding the perfect sponsor and good luck in next year's tour, looking forward to following :)
I guess one positive thing about not being sponsored is you can make honest reviews of the popular brands. I just bought a combat pro fuse so I'm happy to hear that you ranked it so highly. I can't wait to try it myself.
I use a simmer Blacktip 4.2. Its range is insane. And the power it deliveres. I have ridden also a blade 5.3. Blades are indeed lighter but Blacktip is more powerful and bold. And it’s a 4 batten sail. Also much more durable than severne. Here in Greece however Severn is much more popular. But for me Simmer all the way. And Ricardo seems to agree with me hahaha
Very nice and honest video, we really appreciate this. In most mag tests you have to read between the lines to understand the conclusions. Yes, as he says he has different expectations than most of us (capacity for push forwards!), but lightness, power, speed and manoeuverability are definitely universal. I'm pretty sure there is room for more such tests. Our investment in equipment is worth it
Sure it's the right way Ricardo ! Thanks a lots for the review, much appreciated ! I was wondering the entire time about the new fuse - funny it arrived right at the end ;) Good luck for the next season and I hope you'll find sponsors for all the events right on time🤙
Thank you Ricardo. This is a great review. I think it is fine to be honest about how you feel about equipment. Different people will like different things and if more people did honest reviews like this we would all have an idea of what we would prefer for our type of sailing. For what it is worth, when I watched your videos of you sailing these sails I felt that you looked best on the Simmer and Neil Pryde and worse on the Severne sails, but other sailors would be different. Hope you find a sponsor as the tour needs you.
Thanks for catching up with your promise to review the sailbrands you've tested. Wozld love to hear from you where your naish sail sits compared to these sail, since you are no more tied to them eighter.
Que buena review de velas, sin ningún miramiento por sponsor o publicidad. Hecha por un pro histórico de primer nivel. ojalá encuentres un sponsor a tu nivel y consigas el título mundial que tan cerca has tenido siempre.
First of all congrats for the baby. And thanks a lot for the video. It’s precious to have clear and honest opinions. Some tests tend to say that all sails are great which is quite confusing 😂. Wish you the best for finding a sponsor. You totally deserve a world title as you’ve been pushing the sport like very few others for years 🙏🏼👍
Sweet! Gives us normals a good starting point towards which ones to try and evaluate for ourselves, along with your thoughts on why the performance difference comes in with respect to rider weight and conditions - so thank you so much, very refreshing as many have commented already. If you have a chance to also try the Hot Sails and give us your impression alongside these that would be fantastic for us Maui based folk. I'll have to see if Robert can get me a NP to try as my current quiver is wearing out fast. Aloha from Huelo and hope Venezuela is doing better.
Wow I wish I made sails because I’d sponsor you! I sailed all the best spots between 1985-2000 and can’t believe how far the sport has gone! You make the double front look graceful!
Thanks Riccardo, It's very interesting to hear from a objectiv person the differences. For sure you are much better rider than most of the windsurfers! But what you feel counts also for the others! Do more tests like this. Hangloose and good luck for a sponsor. See you on El Medano next year.
Thank you Ricardo for the great reviews👌. I am not even a moderate wave sailor but I would always prefer Simmer Style(and Hot Sails Maui) because of the heritage of the brand and its , for me, distinctive appearance (brand value). What is Alfa Romeo for me for cars, is Simmer Style for windsurfing. Hope you will be back on the tour soon, probably not with GA😂
Hi Ricardo, great Video and as you said usually all the pros have their contracts and won't compare so many sails. Even because you are a pro you recognize issues that we don't feel immediately. But your feedback is really great. Thank you. I really Like to see more videos from you and I hope you will find sponsors for the upcoming season. Jochen
Aloha! Ricardo: don’t worry about what is others think about your opinions, everyone base on their experiences and knowledge to give their opinions, it is only for reference, nothing is wrong, it is great stuff, please keep going do more reviews💪! We are so sad to lost windsurfing monkey in Maui, but life is goes on, don’t look back, look forward with your new life, the new baby, new adventures, you are good people, we are all ❤you! We will be happy to see you back to tour soon, follow your dream even you may not become champions, but the experience you have is gold in your life❤
gracias y para los que no somos wave riders puedes también probar otro material tipo freeride o freerace con tu experiencia seguro que sería de una gran referencia
Do more videos! Also you should get involved in slalom x at least for one season. It'd be super inspirational for the young generation to see more people getting into slalom again!
Congratulations on the new baby - something else in your life more important than windsurfing? ❤ Did you get to try the North sail? And the Duotone D-lab?
Nice to have your opinion. It is valuable to know were and how you use them I agree that the Severn are 'slow' but I really like the handling of the Blade in bump and jump conditions like the Gorge. Me: 73kg weekend sailor Your findings about the Duotone explain why my friend has alway a size smaller than me. Cheers
Would love to know what fellow pros think. Convinced they've used other gear but contractually can't say what they really feel. Good on you for giving an honest representation of the kit. Wave boards next?
Hey Ricardo, you mention lightness in hand quite a few times, separate from lightweight in grams. Curious what you think causes sails to feel heavy or light in hand, is it balance or stiffness related. Interesting review, liked it
Ricardo Thank you very much for this interesting review. This is awesome chance give feedback like this from sailor like you - because no body from PRO guys have possibility public "investigation" about stuff different brands . I read all comments and nobody ask you so.. I want ask you - Neilpryde use masts after 400 not constant curve, its flex top. so you use Combat pro Fuse with original NP mast flex top, or with constant curve and different brand of mast. Thank you very much for your answer. i hope we see you next year as well in Tour fighting for WC!!!
Great stuff Ricardo. What I am always curious about is where the power of the sail is. Some sails have a bit lower and more backwards power point and other bit more forward and higher. How did you feel that with these sails? Lots of difference, or is this just in my mind?☺️
How fast a sail is and what it is like for double forwards; you dont read that in the magazine tests! For an average sailor like myself how fast can be important (as I do some flat water sailing as well), doubles not so much. Really interesting your point about sailor weight and how that affects the sail's performance, you dont read that much in the magazines either.
Thank you for this review. For us, mere mortals it’s more difficult to properly judge our equipment and compare it to others. Maybe you can set up an arrangement with TWS?
The main solution to sail test reviews is to try as many sail brands for yourself as possible. You know you want to. I just do free ride bump and jump so i choose on basis of graphic design. All been good out of Severne, Duotone, Neil Pryde, Naish, Point-7, Goya. Haven't had a chance to try the others. Severne S-1 is supposed to be good for wind foiling but haven't tried it yet as i've got Freeks which are freeking awesome for foiling.
Boards when!? Love this! Btw, wonder what you would think of the new blacktip with the changes it has had now that Marc is on the team, wonder if it gets closer in feeling to the Duotone.
Great video, so nice to have an honest opinion about the sails. Only thing missing is some comments about the durability of the sails. You mention it shortly, but then you dont say nothing about how the different sails compare.
Thank you for that Ricardo! It is a nice Idea to do this an I like the clear Opinion you have on the sails. But again I have the feeling you are very in financial trouble an even most of us know that feelings around that, it does not help to show it in this "fun sport no problems phantasy would". For me it have something to do with our mindset and what kind of energy we spread out in the would… So my arrogant advice is, try to feel that you already have a good Sponsor and a Chance to win the would Title…
