Mae's views on homosexuality weren't exactly p.c., but she was far more progressive than most people of her time. She even wrote a play in the 1920s that was about the world of drag. I think Mae was one of the first celebrities to defend the community, and it means a lot to me.
I strongly believe that is because Mae was a man. (Actually, probably a hermaphrodite) - I've known many people who knew Mae back in those days and say it was "common" knowledge. Tip off is that ONLY Tony Randall was allowed to see her naked and dress her for burial. (So the story goes). Raquel Welsh also claimed she believed Mae was a man. My ULITMATE assurance came last year when talking to a co-worker about the story (no mention of her name) as a woman walked down the hall, she turned and said "Oh, Mae!?" - I said how did you know? Told me her father was a longtime friend of Mae's and indeed was aware.
As the kids say, Meh. According to legend, Mae told police officers arresting either drag queens or just gay men, depending on the story, "Remember when you're hittin' them, you're hittin' a woman." That would go with naive but mean-spirited view at the time that a gay man had the body of a man and the mind of a woman... which I wouldn't exactly call defending anybody.
@@ronronizetti2534 so what? this is the most absurd reason ive heard. there have been many hermaphrodites (if thats even the case) before her that weren't fighting for gay rights!
@@akrenwinkle Mae was trying to help when she saw a policeman abusing some Gay men. Since she believed in reincarnation she told the policeman, "When you hit one of them, you're hitting a woman". She meant well; Her heart was in the right place and gay men adore her. She often said she "could fill the theatres with them guys alone".
@@darrelljustice6105 Nope, had nothing to do with reincarnation. Many then- and more than occasionally now- believe gay men are really women. I know it seems ridiculous, but look at our social and political landscape even now; people have some truly strange ideas. Anyway, I said it was "according to legend." That quote of Mae's is hard to prove one way or the other.
You can't get any more Hollywood than this!
Absolutely fabulous!
Be sure to thank the original guy who posted this. I merely fixed the sound and cleaned it up a little...the link is above.
2 amazingly 'big' individuals, both w/their own stories! thanks for sharing...happy 2013.
The fact that Mae West was old enough to be Rock Hudson’s mother makes this even more bizzare 🤔
It’s camp!
How much I love this.

You can tell it was a well rehearsed scene. Women know things. I'm sure she did. Plus he had a reputation.

Thanks... If I knew more I probably could make it better!
A stiletto up for women for wearing clothes to compliment them and not disrobing as the show goes on as todays performers do.
