SLY WAS MY NEIGHBOR. I LISTENED TO THEIR REHEARSALS SITTIN ON THE CURB AT DESOTO & URBANO DRIVE IN S.F. THE REHEARSALS WERE MORE DOPE THAN THEIR CONCERTS. THE REASON THEY WERE SO FUNKY WAS BECAUSE THEIR GUITAR PLAYER, FREDDIE, WAS DIFFERENT. HE PLAYED LICKS THAT HAD NEVER BEEN PLAYED BEFORE. LATER IN LIFE, HE CAME TO MY STUDIO WITH A FRIEND ROLAND TERRY, AND PLAYED SOMETHING THAT I HAD NEVER HEARD IN MY LIFE: A FUNKY BASS LINE, RHYTHM, AND A LEAD LINE.... SIMULTANEOUSLY. FREDDIE STONE WAS ONE OF A KIND🎸
COOL 😎
U should've recorded them! U would've been rich.The ultimate reality show
What memories
Wow....I spent the night at 700 ubano....many years many times. My cousin...
Lucky you! They have always been a favoriite of mine
I saw them at the Harlem Cultural Festival 1969 at Mount Morris Park, Harlem. My first concert!
I saw them perform at a MLK benefit in Atlanta in the early 70s. AWESOME!!
Greg Erico was pumpin them sixteenths out like a champ on them hats!!
A hint to the future. Disco?
the world's greatest funk band of all time!
I would add, one of the greatest bands of all times.
I upvoted u, and I don't even like funk! James Brown's got nuttin' on Sly!
Sorry. Even Sly would tell you that honor belongs to James Brown's bands during the late 60s and early 70s.
Those were the days from chaos to the music of peace and love and the overcoming of old ways to a new generation and a new day. This new music brought us through and together.Sly was the first band to integrate with black and white musicians.
Rose is not in this performance. Her, Sly, & Freddie's younger sister Vet Stone, took her place on this tour. Vet is visible right before the funk section on Stand.
Rose was my favorite 😍
SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE
ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS
@4:08 Sly's tambourine playing is incredible here! His sense of rhythm is so infectious : )
My very first concert ever. Saw them at the Inglewood Forum early 70's. Rare Earth opened up for them.
EWF opened for them?!
I saw same tour in NYC at Madison Square Garden. Changed forever my ear. SLY was mesmerizing. THE FAMILY STONE was brilliant.
@@mileqjameel8166 No...that was a few years later. Saw that tour in NYC at Madison Square Garden.
SLY married Kathy Silva, a future BRIDES OF DR FUNKENSTEIN, at the show. Almost sadly EWF and EDDIE KENDRICKS were better than S&tFS. It was my third concert by the band. The performance just wasn't OUT THERE. Saw band 2x more, each performance less engrossing or exhilarating than the previous. But I've been a fan for over five decades. When SLY slips the mortal coil I will cry for at least an hour.
@@ethanhill9460 I was in junior high school, into Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, heavier music, but I loved Sly and the Family Stone.
Same Jerry Guardado saw the Jackson 5 June 19 or 20 at Inglewood kia forum 1970 rare earth Ike & Tina turner
I've always felt that Larry Graham with his bass thumping technique was the primary Funk Factor in the band . When he started his own band "Grand Central Station" , l realized that I had been correct.
This is from Lyceum London September 1970. This is the same tour as the Isle of Wight Festival and the infamous Love and Peace Festival in Fehmarn Germany. Sister Rose missed the tour so Cynthia Robinson sings in her place!
Nice info...thanks!!
Thanks for the tip, but can you tell us how you can tell? I thought this might have been Isle of Wight but the lp version of Stand sounds more subdued but maybe it's the mix... this is an awesome clip, did you recognize it from something else?
Aw man this is great. Not enough concert footage of Sly during this 1970 period. Listen to the wah pedal on the organ at 2:06, it's just a sonically beautiful melody to take the tune into the vamp...
Man that's the same thing I'm thinking today is my first day seeing this video I still can't believe I'm seeing this this is from the time he had there's a right going on if I'm not mistaken wow but they were high as a kite damn LOL but still play their ass off
To think that the only other group using that effect on an organ was Soft Machine...
This is awesome
Thank you❣️ What an amazing performer, songwriter & presence
Please load up more Sly Stone stuff .... like this ... this is great man ... thnX
Drugs Destroyed Perhaps the Best Overall Funk Band Ever
Larry Graham couldn't tolerate the flagrant drug use and left the band, and in my opinion, that signaled the beginning of the end for S&FS. It's a shame that they let dope wreck their whole scene, but that was the 70's, what can I say? It's hard to believe that Sly is now 80yrs old, but the memories he gave us will last forever. Thank you Sly, for letting us be our selves agin! 🎼🎙🎹🎺🎸🥁🎵
Don't blame the drugs. Blame the user for willing placing into their body.
@@VGHCX but what if Someone Slipped some Lsd Coke or a Ruthie in Sly's Drink when Sly wasnt Looking for the Okie Doke Move Out of Jealousy ?
@@user-ug4hw7oq7y That someone would of had to lace his drink every time he used the drugs.
@@VGHCX All it takes is One Time -
The GOAT
WOW! I love all the old footage you guys show, man brings back so many memories!
I Saw Sly And The Family Stone In Concert At Newark, Symphony Hall In 1970. They Were About 2 Hours Late, But
When They Finally Showed Up, Sly Turned
That Place Out FUNK STYLE. RIP Cynthia
Robinson. I Love You ❤️
Hey
Dag I wish I was there.
It was shore enough rocking Sly ,Larry Freddy, Cindy. And the rest of sly and the family Stone
STAND🕊️💜😎
Great Band Iconic songs
I think I just fell in love with that trumpet player.
Awesome! Feeling good listening to this! :)
Great footage ✌🏿🎼💯
Now this is music!
You ain't never lied even though they were high as a kite LOL I was 1 years old when this concert was done brings back the memories of the '70s
Thank you
AWESOME FOOTAGE!!! Thank you so much for finding this and making it available! I just subscribed. Will you post the entire show unedited?
Not enough footage of sly...
5:10 Drakes Uncle, Larry Graham
Thanks for the funk
Sly has the most beautiful lips I've ever seen!
Despite the terrible camera work this footage is amazing
Greg Errico back there...
Badass drummer especially on sex machine man that whole stand album is good but sex machine is the highlight of the whole album all 13 minutes and some change LOL that's my favorite track
@@ronaldwilliams4954 That song is seminal fusion jazz.
@@ethanhill9460 with a little bit of blues added in
He did play on "there's a riot goin on" right? I know they were trying to kick him out of the band at the time
@@chrisduke9742wasn’t that whole album a drum machine though? I know most of it was. I’ll have to look it up.
before the big slowdown !
1 chord genius
every day
Those knitted wool afro condoms the band are wearing are great. Wish they would become popular again.
Big bang!)
👍
Awesome watermark. Great!
Thank you and I agree it is “awesome” what’s also “Awesome” is that I found the original films from the filmmakers family and I exclusively represent the rights to this footage. It’s “awesome” that I paid thousands of dollars to get the 30 minute show transferred in 2K so that it would look amazing. It’s also really “awesome” that I decided to share something for free and it’s “awesome” that my watermark is on the footage so someone can’t steal the footage and broadcast it, Now that’s really “awesome”
Glad after seeing such amazing footage that the best comment you could come up with is to complain about a watermark for footage you get to watch for free.
Have an “awesome” day.
@@ReelinInTheYears66 Thank YOU for efforts you detailed above. For the record I didn't notice marking noted above.
I recorded a 1972 S&FS performance at MSG, NYC; of course, I lost it, therefore your footage is priceless to me. GOD BLESS YOU.
@@ethanhill9460 Aw man, that's too bad. In the UA-cam age, you could have shared it with the world. How was the show? Was it the full original band? I know Errico left in late 71/early 72.
Need more Rose! 😫. Cynthia was fine, but Rose is my bag. Tell her that a 46 year old wants her still. Vet!! She's fire, but Rose 🌹 🔥.
"MY MAJOR INFLUENCE"
Does anyone know what this clip is from ? TV ? Movie ?
Damn those boomer cameramen loved those close-ups.
Yea and they hated bass players lol
SLY sounds exhausted. 2x he blew lyrics during STAND; however, I swear band channels LOUIS ARMSTRONG and THE HOT FIVE and THE HOT SEVEN. When I first heard recordings of the two ARMSTRONG bands, prompted by relationship with a niece of LIL HARDIN, I was thunderstruck! ARMSTRONG's bands were funky, the blues-derived incantation of rock as opposed to rock n roll.
This band is indeed the all-time best American popular music band. THE ROLLING STONES are the best from England. BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS take the title in the remainder of the english-speaking planet.
I come mainly for Greg drumming and Freddie funk guitar 🎸 and camera man stuck on stupid 🤦🏾♂️
Sly looks like he’s somewhere else.
He's surely not really into it, compared to earlier, powerful performances.
@@andzwe 1970 was a rough year for Sly and his band. They had come out of the 1960s with so much energy, and it was hard to keep it up with controlled substances taking over.
LOL he was somewhere else hell the whole band was even Larry looked stone I'm like wow but they play their asses off man they don't make music like this anymore I wish I could go back to the '70s I miss that decade
Sh*t: Even when They were "Off", They were ON!!!
Ugh horrible camera work. How could they do this to Sly
feel was the force they all served
