Thanks! That's a really good question! All modern cars have power-assisted brakes and steering (the term power steering is very common). The brakes and steering are assisted with the engines power. The mechanics of this is detailed, but basically, when the engine is turned off, the "power assist" to the brakes and steering would cut off. Technically, they would still function, but they function as fully manual brakes and steering like in older vehicles where you need to apply more force.
