"Christ will never be trendy. He's transcendent." Man, chills. A genuine follower and lover of Jesus. Labeled as Christian or not, Jon Foreman is obviously reflecting God's light.
Jon Forman actually let my 5 year old son and wife talk to him after a concert In Bakersfield California and he signed a poster twice because he misspelled my sons name . He laughed and joked about it and never made us feel that we took up his time. That’s the Jesus I know and have believed in. Some famous mainstream Evangelists wouldn’t take the time to even say hi to you or look your way at a major Jesus event in Washington DC. Back in 97. Thank you Jon for your Christ like character that’s what Christ and church is about. People in the Christian culture got it twisted because they feel they will be contaminated by people who aren’t as spiritual as them.
John 14:6 "Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by me". Switchfoot songs really changed me. It helped me developed into a better person and changed my past. And now all my hope is in my Lord Jesus.
So much respect for Jon! He is a rock and roll deep thinker and expresses his faith and thoughts so concisely, so effectively in song and word! He is wise beyond his years and has such a real faith! God bless all the guys in Switchfoot! Please keep on keeping the faith and keep on rocking!
Switchfoot is my favorite band so many good songs. I love them so much wish I can go to there concert one day. I am a christian and love they arent afraid to address their passion for there faith. :)
These are intelligent men who have the courage to ask questions. I'm 69 years old an ordained minister and my questions our deeper and greater in number than ever before. Yet my faith is stronger than ever,
John Foreman clearly said, " We Love Christ". so they are not denying God here. Jesus seeks to save those who are lost, and so is Switchfoot. Jesus did not like "Religious Culture", and that is what the Christian culture is. good job guys!!
what is Christian culture??to praise, pray, worship, sermon??? Book of acts, Christians are followers of Christ and his teachings. When Jesus taught there was no Christianity, but through his life, death and resurrection, gospels and preaching and following him the idea of Christianity was developed later. The followers of Christ are Christians and his philosophy is Christianity. The very word "Christian" has only Christ in it.
The culture I am referring to is an exclusive country club bubble where we have Christian movies, Music, books, gum, jewelry etc. it's a American subculture that drains the real Christian lifestyle of its power. Jesus never came to start a religion or a sub culture.
Well, I can appreciate everyone's opinion on this video in regards to Switchfoot, but in the end. We can judge all we want, pros and cons, build ups, and knock downs. Christ will be doing the judging, not us, and I vaguely recall something about us falling short of glory of God. So, Let's do then encourage each other to love one another as Christ commanded no matter what labels, trends, genera, etc. I hope and pray everyone has a good week and be blessed. "Love alone is worth the fight". :-)
Christ never would be trendy. He is trascendent! great answer, Jon! and great explanation! Label a group excludes all those aren't fitting on its label, right? Jesus came to sewk and to save the lost.
Jon Foreman and Mike Donehey are both really deep guys, but I think Switchfoot shows it a bit more in their lyrics than Tenth Ave, but Mike did cover some really deep stuff in that things we’ve been Afraid to Say ep they did, plus the struggle is a really good album too!
"If Christ were alive today would he be in a Christian band ... probably not..." Love it ... after describing that most of Christ's interactions were not with people of the church, they were with non believers outside the church ...
I've always thought of them as a band with some really good songs about life. The term "Christian Band" never occurred to me before seeing a bunch of (to me) really weird and kinda unrelated comments about Church and Jesus and "making people return to God" on their videos. So they are Christian. Okay. I don't care. As long as I like their music I don't care about their religion. I haven't heard a song where they yell at people to go to church. I've heard interesting lyrics that I enjoy. Their religion doesn't matter to me. I just want them to keep up the good work and have fun doing it.
As an atheist. Most of what was said makes sense to me. I am more of a Epicurus position, if God really does exist, then he probably isn't too much concerned with our petty problems. How we describe God probably isn't very accurate as well as the only one who can do that is only God himself.. In any case, the more important question is what do we do with genocide, earthquake, wasting food while children are hungry, etc..

These guys get it. The novel "Christine" was a huge hit. It was on the New York Times best seller list for over a year or more (?). This was in the early '70's and it was not a "Christian literature novel". But it IS a Christian novel, because it's the true story about a Christian teacher in the Appalachians at a missionary with a pastor, and other Christians. So, back then, and in our history, there is no "Christian novel, song, band, painting, photography, car, dress, etc." The secularists brought that on. Actually, CBS made it into a series (over-acted when I see it now) and it was their highest rated show, but they cancelled it due to spreading too much GOOD AND GOD! EVIL HOLLYWOOD, they've done the same with "Last Man Standing".
You can label them however you'd like. They're Christians, they're in a band, a lot of songs are obviously about God. If them feeling their calling as Christians is to try to avoid being labeled as a Christian band by record companies and the world as a means to bring more of God's light into the darkness, who are we to criticize? God knows their hearts. Not us. Don't support them if you can't see their reasoning. But I and many others are more than willing to keep supporting the work they are clearly doing for the kingdom of God.
I wonder if they died out because they are a Christian band. I never really thought about them being Christian until I heard them on a XM radio Christian station and I wondered if that is why I stopped hearing them on regular radio, because I thought there first songs were really catchy.
Great message! Remember that the people that knew all things God were the ones that led Jesus to the cross. Jesus worst enemies were not people from other "religions" or romans. They were people that were "experts" in God's will. Today we have many "christians" that do not conform to Jesus message of love. So sadly, for some, there is bad rap for christians. I understand why they want to avoid labels. Labels get corrupted.
I kinda like that idea. we have to start questioning God. Where are you there, the Chruch nowadays is stuck in its own place too shy, but we need to open up our hands to receive anyone and forgive and heal their sins. Not everything is lost yet.
He never said "We're not a Christian band," so it's misleading to put that in quotes. It's a good interview, but I would definitely give it a thumbs down based on that fact. You can't bait someone to click by lying in the title. Quotes insinuate that they said those words verbatim and they never said that. I love their response, but the video title really takes away from the legitimacy of it.
Jesus brought people out of 'religion' to Himself. We are here to draw the lost to Christ. Period. That is what Christians are called to do. Colossians 3:17...Paul instructs believers, "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
Thanks but I will stick to Jesus Culture who is a,real worship band and not afraid to say so. They arent confusing on their lyrics or what they stand for and have no problem being well known.
As much as I like Jon Foreman and Switchfoot, I kind of cringed at that response. We as believers should glorify God, it’s actually what we were created for. Jon was wrong to respond that way, he knows or should know better....
The people asking this question of the band are the OG sjw's. "You gotta call your work Christian or you can't play in our venues and we won't advocate for your shows!" Obviously, being under fiscal and social pressure, and being Christians themselves, they capitulate to this silly line of questioning.
The title was total click-bait. If they made it "Interview with Switchfoot" the fans would've watched it, but because of that stupid "quote", critics/haters will watch it too now. More views!!! Yay!
I'm a Christian and I believe what you guys are doing is wrong. Why... because you're mix up with others. If I was into music I would stick to app like youtube
Jesus was never afraid to label himself, he said it many times, he was the son of God. He also said why he came and that was to seek and save the lost. I understand that they do not want to be "labeled" but why is being labeled "Christian" such a bad thing? I follow Christ, I am a Christian. If I sing, it is songs that point to him, therefore I am a Christian singer. Just another attempt for a band to be more like the world. If it looks like the world, talks like the world... well there you go.
"The son of God" at that time wasn't a group, a label, or clique that had stigmas and connotations tied to it that would drive away the very people he set out to reach. In fact it pushed away the lovers of self. He claimed his Identity because no one knew of it. Not the same as refusing a label that is a huge turn off to many people today. We need to redefine our target audience like they have.
I've never seen anyone come to Christ through switchfoot. It is more like the world. Which is why people compare switchfoots music to say Coldplay, and not a Christian group. The bible says, "When Christ, who is your life, appears." That means that Christ is our life. Everything we do, everything we say revolves around Him. We can't afford to have Him in this part of our life, but not in another. Because that's when we start compromising. He is involved in everything we do. He has to be.
You assume that everyone 's goal should be to harvest. The great commission was simply to inform people, not sway them. The audience switch foot aims for are the people who are good soil. They are planting seeds. God uses people to plant those seeds, and without that there would be no harvest. As for the coldplay bit, you can see they are gaining influence on people who are not exposed to an everyday Christian lifestyle. As a Christian myself, I on the contrary don't relate them to coldplay at all. I find more depth and meat from their songs than I can find anywhere on the Christian Music stations. I don't want to minimize the work they do, they reach a lot of people too. And they are a huge network of peoples, having independent stations all over, while switchfoot is a band of 5 guys. I can however, disagree with experience to back it that switchfoot has gotten friends of mine to ask me questions relating to God, and that has fostered a curiosity inside of their hearts that has grown to fruition in baptism. It started with those questions they we're presented with. I know we are both Brothers here, and I don't want to keep debating like this and risk an argument breaking out, but if you wish to write back in response to anything I'll respect your thoughts.
I think it's amazing that people have asked you about Christ by listening to their music! I haven't had that happen. My thing is that, the Word of God says, "When Christ, who is your life appears." Christ became our life when we were born again. We aren't trying to fit Him into a certain category of our life. He becomes our life. And when I hear about groups or bands that say, "we don't want to be labeled "Christian." It turns me the wrong way. Also the scripture comes to mind, "If you confess Me before man, I'll confess you before My Father and the holy angels. If you deny Me before man, I'll deny you before My Father and before the holy angels." Their mission statement was not to reach the world for Christ. But to put out music that everyone would be comfortable with. And I'm sorry, but if Christ isn't mentioned, it can be interpreted a million different ways. P.s. No arguments here. Only concerns with love
Kaveeta Adeline That's what they all said. They never said He wasn't God. They just don't like the label "Christian band" because there's no such thing as "Christian music". Jon Foreman talks more about this in another interview that I recommend you look up and read.
The title was clickbait, bruh. If they made it "Interview with Switchfoot", fans would've watched it. but because of that stupid "quote", critics will watch it too. More views!!! Yay!
+Terrance Hill The point was that by putting them in the "Christian" box you essentially box God in too. God is outside the box and putting labels on things can limit the ability to ever work effectively outside the box. Jon was spot on. Also, Switchfoot has a long history of getting flak from "the church" for trying to minister to those outside of the church. There is good reason for why they answered the way they did. They are not a worship group, like Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, etc. Also, this wasn't an in depth look at Christ, it was a question asked to band sitting by a pool on their day off from tour. Lame is leaving a negative comment about a positive video. Lame is one part of the body of Christ striking out against another.
I understand completely what you are conveying conceptually about Christian's boxing in matters of our faith, the ministry, worship and labeling..My heart goes out to Switchfoot for ministering to those "Outside the box" ...essentially the exact folks who might benefit from seeing and hearing the words of Christ via rock music verses folks like Chris Tomlin, David Crowder and others who play feel good rock gospel to the "inhe box" a.k.a. "already saved"...Switchfoot is doing the work of Christ...ministering to those might take a chance in "faith"...Love ya brother..!!! RTH
Apologies if my response was a bit curt. I really believe in the band's message and see them as a huge force for good. And we are certainly brothers in Christ!!
Why try to win the world to Christ by being like the world? The world doesn't want Christianity. Maybe it's because the world sees a bunch of hypocrites in the church. Maybe if the world would see people in the church who walked like Jesus, we wouldn't have to disguise the gospel message to people. Maybe it would be plain and evident if people lived like Christ, and showed the world what being transformed by Christ looks like. Instead of trying to win them by making them think being a Christian isn't boring or weird.
etrac_diggin The entire world is Christ's love and compassion...its far beyond winning and wanting...whatever name you call God..its all the same and wherever love exists.there is God .in whatever name or form you choose ...
Switchfoot doesn't seem to have a relationship with Christ ....end of story. They speak of him as he if all they know is the obvious . lol I looked it up because they never give glory to God in their music
@@jimbojugg709there are many people that will claim they are real Christian’s to get a Christian Record label. Then after 3 or 4 years they break it off and go secular to get the record contract they were actually wanting. This has been going on for decades. Many of the underground Christian’s Rock bands that sign specifically with Tooth & Nail Records do this. MxPx is a good example of a snake saying they weee Christians to get a record label. Then after a few albums call it off and go secular. MxPx now uses explicit lyrics in their Punk Rock music.
If I find a Christian man and pretend to be interestd in God and I'm like oh GOSH you've converted me me and stays with me all the time will that protect me from the sex traffickers or nah man asking for a friend

Also the scripture comes to mind, "If you confess Me before man, I'll confess you before My Father and the holy angels. If you deny Me before man, I'll deny you before My Father and before the holy angels."
Their mission statement was not to reach the world for Christ. But to put out music that everyone would be comfortable with.
And I'm sorry, but if Christ isn't mentioned, it can be interpreted a million different ways.
P.s. No arguments here. Only concerns with love
Let the sex machine talk
Liked them a lot thus far, not anymore....trying to be different sometimes you become totally weird or insane! Jesus is God! Period!
Kaveeta Adeline That's what they all said. They never said He wasn't God. They just don't like the label "Christian band" because there's no such thing as "Christian music". Jon Foreman talks more about this in another interview that I recommend you look up and read.
I'm a huge fan of their first 4 albums to this day, to me they were pure, innocent & edgey, everything after just felt like they were trying too hard.
So they not christians ?
The title was clickbait, bruh.
If they made it "Interview with Switchfoot", fans would've watched it. but because of that stupid "quote", critics will watch it too. More views!!! Yay!
they've must be just honest to their own beliefs..and not just call themselves as a body in Christian community
That's about the lamest intellectual attempt to define Christ and the ministry of modern Christian rock bands...
I've said it once I'll say it a thousand times. Religious trauma ruins lives but they are so hot
Switchfoot doesn't seem to have a relationship with Christ ....end of story. They speak of him as he if all they know is the obvious . lol I looked it up because they never give glory to God in their music
If you dont think they give glory to God in their music, you havent listened.
They only got big from playing in their daddies MEGACHURCH lol they’re a Christian band, they just don’t like associating with the lameness of it😂😂
no lameness in it, that perceived lameness only comes from one source...
@@Yankee4ever2 no it’s lame. You were just brainwashed,it’s proven to be indicative of a low IQ and a lack of meaningful life accomplishments 🤡
