I remember as a teenager being in church and feeling guilty for not having the same outward emotions as others during worship. I couldn't relate to anyone else's tears and outward cries. The songs tended to make me uncomfortable and seemed cheesy to me. I vividly remember one particular verse that really struck the nail in the coffin for me to leave as soon as I could and that was "your love is intoxicating in our secret place" and as a 16 year old with profound wisdom (lol) I clicked my tongue and said "wow this is gay. Who wrote this crap? Taylor swift?"
Later on I realized what it was about church that made me feel uncomfortable. It was overtly feminine. All the guys I was friends with left, there were hardly any young men. Having to stand there for an hour listening to romantic love songs was always unbearable. Even if I wanted to sing along I couldn't, the keys were so high I was borderline screeching when I tried. And the lyrics, my God the lyrics (things like; laid back against you and breath, feel your heartbeat, this love is more than I can stand???). I felt wrong to say them but again, I felt guilty for being the only one not saying them. I remember reading revelations and having what amounted to spiritual whiplash. This lovey dovey hipster Jesus is going to return with a sword in hand, wearing a robe dipped in blood, and his sole mission is to exterminate what's left of the human race.
...And I'm supposed to be in a "relationship" with him?

Thanks for sharing your experience. As men we don't need to run away from relationship but we need to redefine what that means and looks like. I believe the tides are changing as we see the Lord raise up more powerful men who can model biblical masculinity the way God intended.

I hear you. I recently began attending church again, after taking a break of a few years. I did it with the intention of obeying God's word, and not neglecting the fellowship of the saints. Every time I attend church I feel conflicted. On the one hand, I feel love for the members of the church. They have all been really welcoming and kind to me. But at the same time, when I am in a service, I feel like my mind is not really there. I'm just going through the motions. The music is really soft and lyrics are very superficial. So I don't feel like I can really sing them from the heart. The sermons are often times pretty superficial too. I don't really feel engaged, or like I am really learning anything new. Then I leave the service, and just go back home, back to the daily grind. I'm not really learning anything that I can apply to my life. If it wasn't for the fact that I spend each morning in prayer, and every evening reading the bible, I think I would have just stopped going to church again. There doesn't really seem to be opportunities in the church to serve in a meaningful way. At best, you might be asked to help setup chairs and tables, or help serve coffee before service. Or maybe help take care of the kids.

I am serving in a mega-church as a men's pastor and we have a growing and strong ministry, but it has not been easy. The Evangelical church is becoming evermore effeminate and less interesting or challenging to men. Feminism is deeply entrenched in modern Evangelicalism.
Here is a theological thought, Christianity is deeply Patriarchal. All things in the universe bear the name of the Father, according to Paul. The Father and Son are the first and second Persons of the blessed Trinity and they are their eternal designations. The Father has ordered all things ontologically and temporally through His Providence. This means there is a hierarchy of beings of which Christ is the head of man and man is the head of woman.

Almost thirty years ago I saw the need to write on man, male and female. It is a think-piece.
Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Christian faith. Which faith except every man do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt, he shall perish everlastingly. And the Christian faith is this, that we worship the one Godhead in Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who created man in His image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. Mankind in two sexes and two sexes in mankind, neither confounding the sexes nor dividing the kind. For there is one sex of the man, another of the woman, but the kind of the man, of the woman, is one: the nature equal, the weakness co-temporal. Such as the man is, such is the woman. The man created, the woman created; the man finite, the woman finite; the man temporal, the woman temporal. And yet they are not two kinds temporal, but one kind temporal. As they are not two kinds created, nor two kinds finite, but there is one kind created and one kind finite. So likewise the man is fallen into sin, the woman fallen into sin. And yet they are not two kinds fallen, but one kind fallen. So the male is man, the female is man. And yet they are not two kinds of man, but one mankind. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge each sex individually to be man and fallen, so the true Christian religion forbids us to speak of two kinds fallen, but mankind fallen. The first man not begotten but made out of the dust of the ground, called man by God. The first woman not begotten but made of that which was taken from man’s side, called woman by man. So there is one kind not two kinds; two sexes not one sex; man created first so greater, woman created second out of the man so lesser; both equal inheritors of God’s kingdom. So stated again, mankind was created only male and female by the Triune God we worship, who made man in His image. He therefore that will be saved must have this conviction of God and mankind. Furthermore, it is necessary for eternal salvation that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ as man and male. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal and incarnate Son of God, and is God, man and male. And He is the head of every man, and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God; Christ, equal to the Father as to His Godhead and inferior to the Father as to His manhood; man, equal to Christ as to his manhood and inferior to Christ as to Christ’s Godhead; woman, equal to man as to her manhood and inferior to man as to her creation; for as much as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. The first Adam gave up his body in sleep to gain his body, his bride. Likewise the second Adam, Christ, gave up His body, but in death to create His Body, His bride the Church. He rose again the third day from the dead; He ascended into heaven; He sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty; from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. At His coming all mankind both male and female will rise with their own bodies to answer for their own deeds. Those that have done good are Christ’s body and shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the Christian faith which gives order to the Body of Christ; except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.

Guys, guys, guys. This video is very Mark Driscoll like. All this emphasis on reclaiming masculinity and bringing men back to the church. And how the woes of the church are because it's too feminine.
Firstly, if that was truly the reason for declining church numbers of men, you would easily make up for it by increasing church numbers of women. But it's not.
The simple fact is this. The Western world in particular is rapidly moving away from traditional Christian belief. We live in a largely post Christian, secular society that has radically changed in the last 50 years.
Men and women don't care however Jesus is portrayed. Masculine, feminine, Biblically accurate, heretical etc. People in general in the West are quickly moving away from Christianity. That's the painful truth. Nothing to do with Jesus being portrayed as feminine or any other analysis you can make. People are rejecting Jesus as a society. These are the days prophesied in the Bible. The falling away.

Hey Tony, I agree with your statements about the Western world moving away from Christian belief; that train has left the station. I am talking about where and how Christian men view and relate to Jesus.
There are many 'versions' of Jesus being presented in different streams of Christianity and men are looking for the Jesus they see in scripture. As the Son of Man, He models true masculinity, and men are hungry to see that. If you want the hard data, stats, and trends, check out the book "Why Men Hate Going To Church."

Based upon what this guy says he sounds like a successful dude but still not awake.
The churches are filled with fat woman and soft beta men. The pastors do nothing but simp to the women. And you Mother’s Day messages about how greatl moms are and how hard and heroic it is to be a mom but for Father’s Day you hear messages about how bad men are and need to do more.
Biblical marriage and headship are not taught but instead it’s the five love languages that emasculate men and appeal to women stoking the fires of narcissism for women and teach women they are not the problem and the men are wrong for not chasing the emotions of women who have no accountability and are taught to have feminist attitudes by the leaders of the church
