As the European football championship football tournament starts in June, the usual countries are favorites; France, England, Germany and Spain. But Europe used to have another favorite; Yugoslavia. For more than 40 years, the communist country used football to keep its population united and elevate itself onto the national stage. By the late 80s, it was considered one of the strongest football sides in Europe when it suddenly and violently disappeared.
Special thanks to Dennis Gudasic, Executive Director of Lokomotiva Zagreb Football Club.
    Correction:
01:30 Voice over misguidedly says Yugoslavia is between Europe and Asia, when it should say it is in south and central Europe. I apologize for the mistake.

6:28 Josip Broz Tito also had a special connection with Hajduk Split, a club from Croatia. During World War II, Hajduk Split refused to play in leagues organized by the Italian and German occupying forces. Instead, many players joined the partisans, the communist resistance movement led by Tito.
In 1944, Tito granted the club the title "the club of Freedom" and officially made Hajduk Split the club of the partisans. As a result, the club gained significant respect within communist Yugoslavia, and Tito continued to support them. Although FK Partizan Belgrade is often cited as his favorite due to its close ties with the military, Tito clearly also had a deep affection for Hajduk Split because of their contribution to the resistance during the war.

Excellent video. However, one interesting piece of information was omitted. Yugoslavia qualified for Euro 1992 as first in their qualifying group. Denmark was the runner-up, and at that time, only the winner would go on to play in the final tournament. Yugoslavia was suspended on May 31st, and Denmark was called in as a replacement. Denmark played their first game in the final tournament 11 days later, on June 11th. Basically, they were called in as a replacement at the last moment, and they had no time for extensive preparations, especially knowing that the Danish league had ended a couple of weeks prior and few players went on their vacations. When they were announced as replacements, there was somewhat of a scramble to gather all the players and assemble a team. Nevertheless, they went on to play in the final tournament and, in the end, became champions, beating Germany in the finals.
Sports is not math, and it doesn't mean that Yugoslavia would have won the championship should they have been allowed to play. Yet, we can't but notice that in the period 1990-92, Yugoslavian football was at the very top in the world. In the 1990 World Cup, Yugoslavia was in the quarterfinals, a man down and still a better team against defending champions Argentina, and only lost on penalties. In 1991, Red Star won the European Cup (later renamed the Champions League) and also won the Intercontinental Cup. In 1992, Yugoslavia was suspended from the Euro, and a runner-up, Denmark, took their spot and won the championship without preparations.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that Yugoslavia was dominating other sports at that time. Yugoslavia won the 1990 FIBA World Championship and the 1991 EuroBasket. Yugoslavia also won the 1991 Water Polo World Champions (and the previous one in 1986). In the 1990 Handball World Championship, Yugoslavia placed 4th. Monika Seles, as a teenager before her 20th birthday, won 8 tennis majors in the 1990-93 period (3 Australian Opens, 3 French Opens, 2 US Opens). The sport was booming at that time (and the country, too, in some aspects), and then self-imploded, and everything fell apart.

Doku finished the most dribbles this year. Openda was tied 2nd place for bundesliga golden boot with 26 goals. Tielemans scored twice against England a few weeks back. Witsel is in the team of the year in La Liga. Bakayoko and Onana are both rising talents too. Our only weakness is our defense but that's why Witsel is now a defender just like in Atletico and De Ketelaere is having a fantastic season in Atalanta. That included a need to having a quality spent freetime such as doing sports as a way of hanging with your "comrades". So sports was used to cheer up working class spirit, so almost every citizen was actively involved in sports on amateur level such as in other socialist countries. However truth is Yugoslavia was a bit more successful at it, in my opinion reason is genetics and that "little hostile tribes" mentality. A few bad apples on all sides are always going to be there of course, but generally we're in a pretty chill state of things right now. The only exeption being the Serbia-Kosovo relationship as the only tension on the territory (of former Yugoslavia) on national levels.

Was left wanting for Pogačar or Roglič when the video went into the "not just football" montage. Still pretty good tho, especially with the correction!

Wow, I remembered watching Yugoslavia's teams in the 80"s and specially the 90's. Didn't realize the history behind that success. Great job for this info. Sports and Politics are almost always alined one to each other.

And the did so with three ties and no wins.

Trivia : Denmark who replaced Yugoslavia in the 1992 Euros surprisingly win it lead by superstar goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel who would win the Champions League title with Manchester United 7 years later.
So the way Yugoslavia play is basically Real Madrid doing FC Barcelona's Tiki-taka

One thing you forgot to mention about Yugoslavia in WW2, is that Croatia joined the Nazis and declared independence from Yugoslavia in WW2 and fought against Yugoslavia.
All the other Yugoslavs fought each other too, therefore the country sadly never functioned… the 90’s wasn’t the only time they slaughtered each other…

Good teams but best is a huge stretch. They were never that. Tiny Denmark won the tournament that Yugoslavia were excluded from. Football is an unpredictable game.

sorry to tell you mate but they need people to watch the video and a random person would be 10x more likely to watch the downfall of 'the best team in europe' than 'a good team in europe'. it's only to pull in viewers, its not that deep

Denmark came second in Yugoslavia's qualifying group, finishing only a point behind Yugoslavia with 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
They beat Yugoslavia in Yugoslavia, they did lose to the Yugoslavs in Denmark and drew with Northern Ireland in Belfast.
They weren't just chosen because they came second to Yugoslavia but also because they had the best record of any team that came second in Qualifying - Portugal had 11 points, Italy, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia all had 10 points.
There is a very good chance that Yugoslavia would have won that tournament had it not collapsed and it's been proven that everyone was severely underrating that Danish team including their star player who refused to go.

Yes, the Ex-Yugoslav nations have plenty of influence from the east and of Asia, but Europe actually ends in the Caucasus, which is Georgia (the country), and when driving over the bridge in Istanbul. These ex-Yugo countries are considered to be south east/central European. Americans need to open a map. TLDW: Yugoslavia broke up, hence it vanished.
