As the European football championship football tournament starts in June, the usual countries are favorites; France, England, Germany and Spain. But Europe used to have another favorite; Yugoslavia. For more than 40 years, the communist country used football to keep its population united and elevate itself onto the national stage. By the late 80s, it was considered one of the strongest football sides in Europe when it suddenly and violently disappeared.
Special thanks to Dennis Gudasic, Executive Director of Lokomotiva Zagreb Football Club.
Correction:
01:30 Voice over misguidedly says Yugoslavia is between Europe and Asia, when it should say it is in south and central Europe. I apologize for the mistake.

My entire families generation is from Yugoslavia. Growing up I can tell you firsthand that this team was national gold not just in football but in basketball too. Thank you for bringing this to light!
Historically Yugoslavia had better basketball teams than football ones. Very good at both sports but your basketball players are top!
My family is also from Yugoslavia, some of whom very yugo nostalgic, which has rubbed off on me. While I never lived in it, it always saddens me to think how we collapsed, and ruined what could've been such a beautiful country.

A good random fact is that Dejan Stankovic, a legenday defender for Inter Milan, is the only football player to have played 3 different world cups with 3 different countries. Yugoslavia, Serbia Montenegro and then Serbia. Which is something incredible!

As a half Croatian with a huge interest in the sport politics of Yugoslavia, I have to say this video was awesome. Great execution, very in depth and awesome profiling of the key people involved in the war and national team. Great work.
Do you guys actually hate each other? Young people particularly.
@FizzyGajing The hate is between Serbs and everyone else. Everyone else either gets along fine or has far less tensions. There's Serb minorities in Bosnia, Montenegro and Kosovo.
Slovenia is the only ex-Yugo country that doesn't have tensions with anyone. North Macedonia also has tensions with Greece. Serbia also has tensions with Albania.
Only serbs are yelling but mouse can't do nothing
@@FizzyGajing Not in my experience, no. I'm half-Croatian, I've been to Serbia plenty of times with my fully Croatian cousins (both cities and in random rural areas) and none of us have ever had a problem. There are nationalists in Croatia who hate Serbs and vice versa, but most people don't give a shit.
@@FizzyGajingI'm Croatian and I see the previous comment by Kristian explained it best. Most people go about their lives regularly and don't care where you're from as long as you're decent and respectful. For example, lots of people from Serbia (and other former Yugoslav republics) find work in Croatia during the summer tourist season. And it goes both ways depending on the opportunity of course.
A few bad apples on all sides are always going to be there of course, but generally we're in a pretty chill state of things right now. The only exeption being the Serbia-Kosovo relationship as the only tension on the territory (of former Yugoslavia) on national levels.
Also, N.Macedonia has its own thing with Greece but I don't count that since it's not an issue with any of the former republics but rather a "third party".
And to fully answer your question, things between Croatians and Serbs (again, from the perspective of a regular Joe) seem to be better with each new generation of young people.
Excuse the length of my answer, just wanted to expand a bit on what Kristian described in the previous comment 😅

As a Croatian its always been bafflingto me to go to different countries and find they don't have a court for football/basketball/handball/whatever around every other corner and even if they do I don't see kids playing there. We used to meet up at 7/8pm every night in summer as kids in front of the church and play sports! Realizing there's people that don't get decent at a sport and do it even up to their fourties' and late fifties is insane to me 😂😂 I don't know what I would do without playing basketball every week at least once. It's such a cultural phenomenon. There's not one Croatian boy I know that doesn't want to and enjoys playing football with his friends EVERY DAY in summer. Plus the ocean. We swim constantly. We move and run and jump constantly. We compete (probably daddy issues but fuck that 😂)!

Was left wanting for Pogačar or Roglič when the video went into the "not just football" montage. Still pretty good tho, especially with the correction!
The tone of the video almost talks as if Yugoslavia itself is what kept people away from nationalism. But it's not, it IS also nationalism and forcing all those people to live "together" is actually what fueled their hatred towards each other. It's one thing when people come along naturally, it's a totally different one when they want independence and a dictator keeps them from getting it at all costs. Yugoslavia was a pure example of how bad and dangerous nationalism can be, and sports was only used as a political weapon against people's intentions, NOT for the people.
But still, great job and amazing video! Lots of great information 👏👏

Thing is Yugoslavia as other social countries had those worker unions and mentality of trying to achieve working class harmony. That included a need to having a quality spent freetime such as doing sports as a way of hanging with your "comrades". So sports was used to cheer up working class spirit, so almost every citizen was actively involved in sports on amateur level such as in other socialist countries. However truth is Yugoslavia was a bit more successful at it, in my opinion reason is genetics and that "little hostile tribes" mentality. 6:28 Josip Broz Tito also had a special connection with Hajduk Split, a club from Croatia. During World War II, Hajduk Split refused to play in leagues organized by the Italian and German occupying forces. Instead, many players joined the partisans, the communist resistance movement led by Tito.
In 1944, Tito granted the club the title "the club of Freedom" and officially made Hajduk Split the club of the partisans. As a result, the club gained significant respect within communist Yugoslavia, and Tito continued to support them. Although FK Partizan Belgrade is often cited as his favorite due to its close ties with the military, Tito clearly also had a deep affection for Hajduk Split because of their contribution to the resistance during the war.

Denmark came second in Yugoslavia's qualifying group, finishing only a point behind Yugoslavia with 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
They beat Yugoslavia in Yugoslavia, they did lose to the Yugoslavs in Denmark and drew with Northern Ireland in Belfast.
They weren't just chosen because they came second to Yugoslavia but also because they had the best record of any team that came second in Qualifying - Portugal had 11 points, Italy, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia all had 10 points.

Excellent video. However, one interesting piece of information was omitted. Yugoslavia qualified for Euro 1992 as first in their qualifying group. Denmark was the runner-up, and at that time, only the winner would go on to play in the final tournament. Yugoslavia was suspended on May 31st, and Denmark was called in as a replacement. Denmark played their first game in the final tournament 11 days later, on June 11th. Basically, they were called in as a replacement at the last moment, and they had no time for extensive preparations, especially knowing that the Danish league had ended a couple of weeks prior and few players went on their vacations. When they were announced as replacements, there was somewhat of a scramble to gather all the players and assemble a team. Nevertheless, they went on to play in the final tournament and, in the end, became champions, beating Germany in the finals.
Sports is not math, and it doesn't mean that Yugoslavia would have won the championship should they have been allowed to play. Yet, we can't but notice that in the period 1990-92, Yugoslavian football was at the very top in the world. In the 1990 World Cup, Yugoslavia was in the quarterfinals, a man down and still a better team against defending champions Argentina, and only lost on penalties. In 1991, Red Star won the European Cup (later renamed the Champions League) and also won the Intercontinental Cup. In 1992, Yugoslavia was suspended from the Euro, and a runner-up, Denmark, took their spot and won the championship without preparations.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that Yugoslavia was dominating other sports at that time. Yugoslavia won the 1990 FIBA World Championship and the 1991 EuroBasket. Yugoslavia also won the 1991 Water Polo World Champions (and the previous one in 1986). In the 1990 Handball World Championship, Yugoslavia placed 4th. Monika Seles, as a teenager before her 20th birthday, won 8 tennis majors in the 1990-93 period (3 Australian Opens, 3 French Opens, 2 US Opens). The sport was booming at that time (and the country, too, in some aspects), and then self-imploded, and everything fell apart.
Damn shame that they focused so much on their differences rather their similarities. Yugoslavia was and a could have been an incredibly formidable nation.
You cant unify the tribes. Its basically Africa of Europe.
@@saellenx3528 Pretty sure the Africa of Europe is France LMAO
I grew up in a part of Zagreb that produced several Croatian national team players. I went to school with two of them, and our mothers worked together (the Šimić brothers). Our school playground was full of talent, and basically, if the best players gathered, the only way I could play was by bringing the ball (since there weren't many balls, and whoever had the ball got to play regardless of skill).
My brother and I always thought we were bad football players. Probably 100 kids before us had the advantage of playing for the school team. Since no one liked to be the goalkeeper, I managed to secure that position for my class team. My brother didn't even get that. It was only much later that I realized my brother and I weren't actually bad, we just grew up surrounded by incredible talent. Many of those talented players didn't continue their careers, and some might have been even better than the later Croatian national team members.
An episode in Switzerland opened my eyes. When my brother and I went to a local playground there, the locals made a mistake by creating a team of foreigners and their local team. My brother, an Italian guy, and I, along with a few of their not-so-talented foreigners, literally dismantled all the teams that showed up. It wasn't sport, it was a massacre. Winning by 20 goals became boring, so we asked to mix the teams. I was amazed at how poorly the Swiss played football. But actually, it wasn't that-they just hadn't been sharpened by the best players like I had.
1:32 "home to dozens of ethnic and religious groups" - proceeds to display the majority group of bosnia, bosniaks, as a minority and calls them "serb-croat muslims". where the hell did you source that map from? i find the different "ethnic groups" in bosnia to be inventions anyway but rather just different religious groups of bosnians, but you didn't even bother to correctly show the invented narrative
"montenegrin serbs" is also wild 😆😆 did a serb draw this up for you?
That map is from Kingdom of SHS, but to use it for post WW2 stuff is just braindead.
It was just to show how this area is diverse and everyone believes and “makesup” different things. I’m not an expert thought so idk
It's sadly because they (Serbs and Croats in power) didn't let us identify not even as "Muslims" until the 1960s. We either had to put Serb, Croat or Others. So yeah somewhere near the 1960s, we finally got that opportunity.
Actually this isn't far from the truth, because genetically bosniaks are mostly croats and serbs who converted to Islam. We are all very mixed and there will always be someone offended with how you call them. So just call us Jugo's 😂
Do a video of the different national teams in the UK. England, Scotland, Wales etc
SCOTLAND ALSO HIGHLIGHTED WHEN ENGLAND MENTIONED GRRRRRRRRR
Beginning to love your channel. Geopolitics and sports 🙌🏽🙌🏽 keep them coming once the info is accurate ❤️
Here’s after the group stage: This video did not age well at all😂
search party feels like the early days of kurtzegast ... refreshing ... thought provoking and creative !
At 0:14 you list England but highlight both Scotland and England
Who tf has never heard of Yugoslavia? Insane title
6:27 Nonsense. Tito's favourite club was Hajduk
My grandfather was from Yugoslavia, his family left when it started to dissolve, I’ve always wondered what their football team would be like now, thank you for doing this video!! I’ll always root for Croatia at the world stage :)
It is not Yugoslavians, it's Yugoslavs
Great unbiased video thanks man
Here before Croatia crashes out of Euros, they just got dismantled by Spain
There are 2 more games to play, so stfu!
Wouldn't call it a dismantling. They were very much in it all game, the spanish were just more clinical. Still a good chance they make it out
amazing work once again, good video!
One thing that helps is the players leaving from wars of the 90s getting great education in sport and other things in their new host countries. Rakitic althiugh he has now retired from internationals was born in Switzerland. Mateo Kovacic was born in Austria. You have a similar situation with Albanians in Switzerland making up a lot of the Swiss team and now some of them choosing to play for Albania. I live in Sweden and watch the leagues here and see a lot of Middle East players born in Sweden who are now playing football for their Middle East country. With an expanded World Cup I think we will see a competitive Middle East team with players born in Europe
Yupp, African football as a whole benefits massively from Africans born in Europe who return to represent an African country. Cameroun, Senegal, Nigeria and the DRC are good examples
