First time viewer of his work...I do see glimpses of potential...the Fortuny-inspired motifs and the obvious references to the classic Dior silhouette...but it ends there. As for the former, the motifs are juxtaposed against what appears to be very common lace and, finally, the overall silhouette of the collection is poorly executed. A plebeian zipper pull is in full view...the garments are poorly fitted to the models...waistlines appear in the wrong places...necklines are misplaced...pleats are not properly aligned...and the drape of the fabric is ignored completely...resulting in a lack of detail that distinguishes the master from the apprentice. From the few collections of Mr. Gunawan that I have seen...this is not design and execution at the level befitting the designation of couture...
I'm sorry you do sound like a person with experience....however are you nuts ! ? this guy is so on target his style is individual and unique I love it ! 💋
I think this collection was meant to pay homage to his east asian roots, it's very ethnically inspired and on top of that his choice of style is unlike to what you usually see on runways today. It contradicts styles we're often accustomed to. And in my opinion, that in itself is a daring move. I think it's fabulous.
