What if You Could Sing in Your Favorite Musician's Voice? | Holly Herndon | TED

  • What if you could create new music using your favorite musician's voice? Sharing her melodic gifts with the world, multidisciplinary artist Holly Herndon introduces Holly+, an AI-powered instrument that lets people sing with her own voice. Musician Pher joins her onstage to demonstrate this mind-blowing tech while singing into two microphones -- one that amplifies his natural voice and another that makes him sound just like Holly.

    Caveat Listener - any speaker who credits ‘Mack The Knife’ only to ‘Brecht’ (1:09)
    is not someone to be taken seriously. Kurt Weill wrote the music you hear;
    Brecht was the lyric writer/story collaborator with the music composer Weill. (more)
    As a professional musician and composer with decades of experience with new technology,
    I am always intrigued when ‘new’ things show up in the field of music.
    This TED talk presentation is similar to many innovations I’ve seen in the past;
    on the surface very impressive, but practical use is much less promising.
    Holly is like many other people that hail from the computer/software field -
    eager to ‘change the world of music’ with their technological innovation.
    However, the ‘smoke and mirrors’ alerts go off when 1)she does not sing anything herself -
    2) the amount of processing ( digital delay, reverb, etc.) on the ’spawned’ vocals
    3) the glossing over the actual software algorithms created by another party
    that do all the hard work of analysis of ‘source’ material.
    The comments I’ve seen from those that have tried ‘Holly+’ are that it does not work..
    Still, with input from actual musicians, an increase in processing power and AI capabilities,
    this early version of vocal replacement technology will be considered
    at the stage in development not unlike the Apple Newton -
    a good idea, poorly designed and implemented,
    that was the precursor to what eventually became a useful tool - the iPhone.
    I suggest singers work on their craft like Pher obviously has -
    it is his human voice (tone, phrasing, expression) that makes any of this worth listening to.

    This is wild! The immortalization of a voice could have a lot of practical use for those with vocal disabilities who lose access to their voice, giving them the ability to sing again (or even the first time!) and make musical careers more accessible to them. Or maybe even beloved, aging musicians who love to perform but begin to lose their vocal strength over time. I wonder if it's possible to put an auditory equivalent of a watermark on the tracks so you could tell if this AI was being used.

      That is a small minority of cases. It damns more people that it empowers.
      Potential challenges:
      -production companies owning someone’s voice forever
      -people potentially stealing someone’s voice. (Literally look at 2d art space now, it’s just openly used more for theft and scams. And it’s only a few months old)
      -harder for people who put in effort to actually get work, and if they do they could have it wholesale taken from them
      It sounds horrible but maybe it’s better off that way when the majority living in a weird dystopia. Musicians and Artists already struggle as is.

    Amazing and scary what we can do with technology. You can hear a slight lag where the AI is taking the song from the Live mic and outputting the female voice. If they could get that down to 0 then it'd be pretty near flawless. But it's still scary knowing that deepfaking is at the point where we can make audio and video of someone that is completely manufactured and fake. Think about that for a minute. Then remember that a couple of students at MIT developed Deepfake technology back in the 90's and it's taken until now for the rest of us to have access to it.

    I don't know if others noticed this, but his vibrato made her voice sound out of tune sometimes, even when on Holly+ alone. "a wide variety of phrases in my entire vocal range" is too vague if she meant musical phrases or spoken. If musical it could be clashing vibratos, if not it would be so much more interesting to understand why.
    It could even be just throwing the singer off when it changed.

    The live singing with her voice would be difficult, when singing, you rely on the familiarity of hearing your own voice, try singing without hearing yourself, or being on stage and you cant hear yourself in the mix, its very hard! In 10 years time, you will be able to ask Spotify to change the singer on what you are listening to, or create a song in the style of someone with a singer with aspects of whoever you want. I'll finally be able to sing Back in Black and stop telling the audience I can only sing the Bon Scott era AC/DC songs!
