- The Hoka Kawana is a new shoe intended to reach a new audience to Hoka. It's good for the gym, for walking, and for casual use. But is it any good as a running shoe?

The music and footage in the intro was superb. Great job!
That tune at the beginning is sweet🤙
Hello Kofuzi, an interesting idea for a followup to this shoe could be when you test it when it gets hotter or warmer
The properties od EVA make it very prone to change its firmness depending on the temperature. My arahi 5 does the same thing. Warm = soft, cold = firm
I think it’s the first time I ever heard you encourage viewers to hit the subscribe button, not that anyone is unwilling to do so, haha
Unrelated to the Kawana: As a fellow Chicago runner, nobody is as dedicated to cold weather runs than you @kofuzi.
Been a huge Hoka fan since 2016, but I think I’m starting to prefer other brands with more exciting foams and colorways (NB, Saucony).
Honestly same. I have kinda been disappointed as of late they need some innovation I feel like I have been wearing the same shoe for 3 plus years.
Can’t forget puma and asic
I agree… I hated the bondi 8 it was too firm and no responsiveness. I switched to 1080v12 and it’s significantly softer and overall better
Looking forward to the update for Kawana's :)
You mention good casual use… you might have hooked me!
Am I the only one who actually luvs this shoe it’s very similar but yet looks way different than any other Hoka
beautiful Chicago, we spent christmas there with my wife this year, just left the day before the first snow
Snow is the best part
@@kofuzi we live down south so we went specifically to see snow, just missed it by a day
It is an interesting pair of shoes. I was looking for a pair of daily trainer and easy run shoes. Got attracted by the look of Kawana , I think it is very beautiful. I thought it would be bouncy like Clifton, it is actually quite firm. The rocka design makes the run very smooth but I found the upper very tight. I hope it will open up after few more runs.
did it open up after a few runs? I feel it is too tight in the upper mid foot
@@giangitsame here😢
@@KWB77 remove the inner sole would help. The shoes are actually comfortable even without the inner soles.
@@giangit thanks for tips
bought my first Hoka shoe as Kawana, as a nike free run fans, this is a very soft plushy comfy shoes, that make me like to walk again, and i walk a lot on it in first few days. But I do found that running is not that suitable for this shoes, (maybe jus run a few minute is enough). for anyone that unable to run due to health issue, this shoe is perfect for walking hours.
I completely agree with your assessment of the shoes ride on the run. It’s firm but still really nice, if it gets softer after breaking it in I’ll be a thrilled runner!
First though for me on the shoe was “interesting” haha
I’m guessing that for every other person who wants it to get softer, there is someone who likes it just the way it is
funny because the beach it is named after is not on the gold coast as it states on the website, its on the sunshine coast 3 hours north
Really wanted this shoe to be great for running but it looks like it’s more of a lifestyle shoe.
Perhaps the midsole is firmer because it's intended as more of a stability shoe/ everyday shoe? It will probably last longer. Never been a Hoka fan (due to their lack of stability shoe choices and low drops). Might give this one a try but the 5mm drop is a bit low for a stability shoe.
Exactly
Any plans to try this out at the gym? I’m assuming Hoka is suggesting it more as a treadmill shoe than one that could be used for lifting or core work?
When are you reviewing the Hoka Mach supersonic?
Kawana is a place Michael! It's a beach side suburb of what we call the Sunshine Coast (as opposed to the US) & is near other places like Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Caloundra & Noosa. Most are derivations of First Nations place names. There is another Kawana near Rockhampton in central Queensland. Enjoy!!! 💪✌🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Hi Kofuzi, Would you recommend this shoe to midfoot runners, or did I miss this spot. Running in germany.
How does this compare to Bondi and Clifton which I have both , for different reasons.
did he mention if it was true to size for him? seemed to have missed that.
I love the color way and look of this shoe but man it was so incredibly narrow in midfoot
HOKA seems to have plateaued on their design department. You cannot sustain a brand by simply jazzing up a model with some eye catchy shape or color and sell it as an innovating product. I do love HOKA, but they truly must step up their game because the competition (specially Saucony, Puma & Asics) is getting better and better
What happens to all the shoes these companies send you after you get to test them? Do you get to keep them? Thank you for the fantastic breakdowns/reviews!
I try to get at least two videos out of a shoe: a first run video and a video after 100 miles. After that, I donate the shoe to charity.
If a company ever wants anything back that I've ever reviewed, they are welcome to it. So far, no one as ever asked.
Wow
Interesting u enjoy it. Pretty much all the reviews recently they all disliked it
I see what Hoka is trying to do with this one. I think they will sell a lot of these, even if it’s not my favorite type of shoe
So, on the lighter support side of the arahi 5, outsole looks a bit more durable, is it more breathable? Arahi 5 made my feet sweat. For all the little things that bugged me I spent the most time in the 5's, they're very light, the Kawana is just slightly heavier. I'll consider both when the Arahi 6 comes out, durability is a ? For those that asked, NB Vongo v5 is softer, squishy with good bounce, good support, for EZ, daily, recovery run.
I’ve never run in the Arahi, so I can’t comment on the relative breathabilities
If your toes weren't in a puddle in the kawana, that's a win, oh, the arahi does tend to disappear, hardly ever think about my shoes when wearing them, they do have some minor problems, thanks for the review, didn't even know the kawana were stability.
Hello Fofuzi, Is it good for walking and standing all day ? Thank you :)
Yeah
Colorway is very nice. Suitable for casual uses or gym center.
It’ll look good in a lot of situations
When kofuzi said at 3:07 - "the midsole is FIRM." and after hearing BITR's take on the same "firmness" of this shoe... I kinda' knew I'm staying away from this Kawana. Sticking to my Clifton 7/8 for my recovery/daily trainers.
I think this shoe needs to be considered as the moderate stability shoe that it is. I can’t think of a single stability shoe that isn’t firm.
It’s not going to be for everyone. But for some people, it will be The one.
@@kofuzi totally agree. This shoe is not going to be for everyone. Hope anyone who buys them... likes them. For everyone else, let's just enjoy and keep running.
Will this shoe be good in general gym use like weightlifting and light treadmill runs?
That's what some reviews are saying as this is more of a lifestyle shoe that's gym first, run second. It's also good if you're a walker, which is what I do as I walk 10 - 20 miles a day.
I hope so as I've just bought a pair for that exact reason after reading that they were good for gym work
I’d like to better understand where it fits into Hoka line!?
It’s a moderate stability daily trainer that’s being marketed as a gym/lifestyle/run shoe.
How do you run in a mesh shoe when it's -13C outside?
first, run for a couple weeks at 5C, then a couple weeks at 0C, then a couple weeks at -5C. and by then, -10C or -13C seems just normal.
it's always my eyes and face that get cold. everything else can usually manage fine.
Hey Mike - great video as always. Unrelated to the Kawana, are you still looking at promoting sponsorship of subscribers /viewers charity running endeavours? I am doing my first ever Ultra marathon in the lake district (UK) in June - aptly named the Lake District ultra challenge to raise money for a local hospice who support people and their families who have life threatening conditions /illnesses. My mum benefitted from their care prior to passing away from Pancreatic cancer new years day 2018 and since then I have pledged to do an event every year to support their work. Let me know your thoughts. Would love to have chance to run with you on the Chicago waterfront sometime by the way! Keep up that momentum 👍
Doe these feel like the clifton 7 to me the most comfortable hoka shoe
there are some similarities, but I would not use the two interchangeably
5:36
Just 7 degrees??
Cold is relative
I think it is just me that all shoes ( from the cheapest to the most expensive) from Hoka looks the same.
I love the looks of the shoe but i think its another step in the wrong direction for hoka. I think hoka need to ask themselves what are they aiming to do as a brand. before they were sold to deckers they were killing the game being the first to do a rocker shape, a bucket seat design and of course max soft cushion. At the time that was a huge leap forward, but now every other brand has done those things better than hoka while they make everything worse.
My main question to hoka is, do they really think the shoes they release now are better than the original models like the huaka, or clifton 1? i ran in them all and to be honest the newest shoes are worse than the ones from 8 years ago. thats not good.
I think the company is now a couple orders of magnitude bigger (from a revenue perspective) than it was back then. One of the ways they’ve done that is by connecting with runners who may not want that legacy Hoka product.
The relevant question is, regardless of whether they are connecting with runners who are different than you, are they still making shoes you like? Do you dislike the Clifton 8? Or the Mach 4? Or the Torrent 2? Or the Zinal?
@@kofuzi honestly those shoes are okay but dont forget how good the orginal first few models were from hoka. The reason the clifton 8 and mach 4 seem good is because the cliton 3-7 and mach 1-3 were so bad 😅 ive ran in them all and the only real chamge is in the uppers. Some people like them but i think they are too heavy and didnt mind the super light mesh they used in the first place. Has the foam changed at all? Not really. If anything just firmer so they last slightly longer. The outsoles are also slightly more durable i guess but not by much
@@kofuzi I get your point that the compamy is bigger and they have a big market outside of runners specifically. But they built the brand off of one idea and were market leading. Now they are just rinse and repeating the same stuff from years ago with a higher price tag.
Another Shoe for sunny wheater runners or hospital staff………..
You mean like Ultraboost?
@@kofuzi exactly….or the new adistar….in general is Adidas, Brooks and Hoka World Champion in creating non sense Running Shoes…..

Brick shoes hell nah wtf
These will sell just because they say “Hoka” on them
Not every shoe gets to have those words on the side. It means something.
@@kofuzi i hope this is ironic
Brick shoes.
