The crow baby opens its mouth wide and the parents stuff food down the throat. Eagles take the food out of the parents beak. It’s interesting how different species have different instinctual body language to communicate.

    This baby crow was able to bring people together in a caring way from all over. Maybe that is its legacy, a symbol of hope in such trying times for us humans. what? bring people together? huh? made me mad it wasnt rescued!!!

    • @barnowlwatcher
      @barnowlwatcher 4 роки тому +7

      Lauren You just made my point - when a situation like this occurs where an item of prey is brought into the nest and is still alive and not killed, it gets a lot of attention as people watch to see how the situation will unfold. There are documented cases where the predator species seems to adopt the prey species but it is still very rare. These cams are allowing us to view these incidents and yes, they have a world wide audience which is why I made my comment. Probably everybody was rooting for this little crow. The crow didn’t actually stand a chance though as it just has a very different way of eating than birds of prey.
      To your point of rescuing, that is *our* human nature to want to save the crow. But there are consequences to intervening in an active eagle nest...for starters it is illegal and you wouldn’t want to jeopardize the eaglet in any way unless absolutely necessary (like removing a fishing line tangled around an eaglet’s foot as happened in the SWFE cam) for example. Remember this is their world, not ours, so we are just observing their life because a camera happens to be there. I swear it never gets easier when watching some drama unfold, and so many of us debated the issue of letting birds be rescued when they were starving to death, but I finally understand this is nature and it has its own way of balancing its populations. If you think about it, why should the eaglet not get its food so the crow can live? Who gets to make that kind of decision? You just go around and around, lol. And even though I know that, I still sometimes chase the hawk that tries to get my songbirds at my feeders! I yell “go hunt someplace else” as if I have the right to deny him his dinner.
      There is an amazing story I would love to share if you don’t already know about it. Here on UA-cam look up SassePhoto. Look for his video titled Hawk raised by Eagles - The complete story. He documented this incredible event which happened in 2017 in B.C. Then, earlier this week we had another situation in Latvia in a White tailed eagle nest - he has a short video on that but it didn’t end well. There is one more story that happened last year, here in California, with another bald eagle nest accepting a red tailed hawk that was brought in as prey, but I’m not sure he made a video. Take care 😊

    • @barnowlwatcher
      @barnowlwatcher 4 роки тому +7

      Lauren Why would you want to have the camera shut off so we can’t continue to watch the eaglet grow and hopefully fledge? As far as I can tell unless you are vegetarian (human or animal), you are eating other living things to survive. Do you have a problem with lions eating baby zebras? Should we shut off that camera? Let the lion cub die to save the zebra? Everything that depends on some other living thing is simply surviving, as they have evolved to do. Only us humans have a choice. Are you vegan? Do you have a leather belt? Shoes? Perhaps you are forgetting that the crows raid nests ALL THE TIME. Is that okay with you? This is just nature and if this really bothers you then you should watch cams that don’t involve something eating something else.

    Hi, Lady Hawk!
    Another of your older videos that popped up as a suggestion by UA-cam.
    In light of the current story of Malala and Junior, this interaction is extremely interesting.
    The crow apparently died accidently, but, there are a lot of similarities of behavior from the mom and eaglet to what we just saw, with Junior and Malala.
    But, the story here couldn't advance because the crow didn't know to grab the food, although mom did hold it out for taking... even moving the food closer for feeding in a direction that would have favored the crow, had it been a raptor chick.
    I think your statements about Malala's forwardness, the hook on the beak, coloring, with white head almost looking like a miniature bald eagle, etc., were very instrumental in her/his survival. Spot on, as usual!! 👍🥰
    With the crow dying here, there was no story, but, this eaglet wasn't phased, one way or the other. It did, let the crow seek shelter under it, which was a surprise.
    But, not the reaction that we saw from Junior. He seemed enamored and mesmerized by Malala. Then, his feeding her/him, was astounding, etc.
    I am more and more convinced that their story was a "relationship" of a sort, that was meant to be. Both being drawn together ❤️ for purposes unknown. Siblings? Friendship? Romance? (Lol)
    I hope a reader will be curious about what I am saying and view your videos on the Gabriola Island BC, nest.
    This link below is to your beautiful tribute video to Junior.
    For readers... the eaglet and the hawklet (who was brought to the nest alive and as food) became best friends, instead. The eaglet tragically died from an accidental electrocution from an unprotected electrical wire.
    ua-cam.com/video/qZE4CYQHgpg/v-deo.html
    TYLH! 😻
    Your contribution to the study and appreciation of wildlife, is so invaluable! You are a one in a million, special and kind, person and videographer!
    God Bless You! ❤

      @ladyhawk  2 роки тому +1

      Hi CC - that is great you are going through some of these older videos!! Yes this was a different story and outcome - one we did not think would end well due to the mechanics of how an eagle feeds its young and how a crow feeds its young. There was no bonding or relationship with the eaglet and crowlet baby like Malala and Junior. Mom eagle did try to offer food to the crowlet but she did not know how to put the food down the throat the crowlet which is how its own Mother feeds it. The eagles offer food to their young and they grab it from Mom- so all the crowlet knew to do was open its mouth wide and cry out.
      Junior and Malala did have a special relationship and bond - one we may never get the chance to witness again! Thank you for sharing the tribute video for those that have not seen it. Take care my friend & God bless! ♥

      No problem, Lady Hawk. I feel honored and blessed to have seen such an amazing thing happen.
      The other day, a video was suggested by YT, and it was for the Gabriola nest.
      I saw Dr. Sasse's pinned comment, and left one thanking him, etc.
      I had no idea the video was posted by Pam. I just thought that it was someone from Dr. Sasse's affiliations, because of the pinning, etc.
      Pam did respond to my comment about posting a link to your tribute video.
      She said she had others on the way, but, that she has been super busy. I guess they get a lot more cars hitting animals during these months, etc.
      I put the suggestion in there as there were so many questions. I thought that neither she, nor Dr Sasse, would want to be grouped together with those who post videos of horrendous behavior, in birds, which we know is natural to their species. Those people don't give explanations, etc. Just exploitation.
      But, it solicits hatred for the birds in their videos. Intended or unintended. It just irks me! So, now knowing who I was speaking with, I responded.
      In that comment I also suggested that at the very least, if she had the time, to post her heartfelt statement that she gave after Junior's death, which you so kindly put into your video, with the title beginning "Heartbreaking News" 💔
      I asked if there were any sightings of Malala or the parents, and mentioned how so many people were asking and still grieving.
      I posted that second comment, yesterday, and have not heard back from her, as of yet.
      I will post a comment, if I do hear anything, here, or, with the next old video I view.
      Be well, and be blessed! 😻

    Oh, this is so sad 😢 Situations like this don't usually turn out good. The little crowlet already had pin feathers on its wings. 😔 At one of the nests that I have been watching - ND LEEF - the youngest of three eaglets passed away 2 days ago 😢 Not enough food for him and repeated beatings from the middle eaglet. Things like this just break my heart 💔 I so wish that you could make a memorial video for him - ND12.

    Heartbreaking, even knowing the odds of the baby crow surviving were astronomically against it, it hurts. Tragic. Crows being extraordinarily intelligent among very smart avians, this nest will be forever challenged by the crow parents who suffered so much. This is a no-win from any perspective.
    The crow parents couldn't rescue their baby, birds don't carry babies like dogs and cats😖.
    R.I.P., tiny one, may your essence forever soar🙏😰♥️♥️💕☮️🕊️

      Melinda, I feel the baby crow had a good chance to live if the mother eagle would have just fed him. They said that he was just 4 days from fledging & if he had been fed, he might have flown away tomorrow or Monday. I follow Lady Hawk on 3 of her eagle nests, Big Bear, NEFL & SWFL.
      I'd like to think if this mother eagle (who I just saw for the 1st time yesterday) could have been Harriet or Gabriella, they would have been observant enough to see the little baby with his mouth wide open, asking for food. But I know nothing about this nest or any of the parent's behavior patterns. Gabby & Harriet (& Jackie from Big Bear) are great mothers & might have kept this baby crow alive long enough for it to fly away with it's parents.
      I also follow Lady Hawk's Royal Cam Albatross channel in New Zealand with the baby Pippa & her parents OGK and YRK. In that nest the parents must regurgitate the squid straight into Pippa's mouth. As you well know, baby eagles are being fed fresh fish within the first 24 hours of life. I'm not 100% sure how baby crows are fed. As babies, do they eat like eagles (whole food) or like the baby albatross, Pippa with regurgitated food from the parents?
      If they only eat regurgitated food, then you are right, the baby crow had almost zero chance of living. But if he could have eaten what the eaglet was eating, then all it took was this mother eagle to see that he was also very hungry & share with him. I am very saddened by his slow death & prayed for a better outcome. Thank you for your input, a fellow bird (actually all living creatures) lover in San Diego.

    • @ladyhawk
      @ladyhawk  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Michelle no the eagle Mom could not feed the crow even if she wanted to. A baby crowlet and a baby eaglet are very different, eaglets grab food from their from their parents, while a crowlet's parents shove the food directly down their throat. Thus the eagle Mom did not understand what the open mouth meant from the crowlet. The crow did not get killed by the eagles, it was standing next to the eaglet when Mom starts to aerate the nest and the eaglet laid on the baby crow. An hour later, Mom gets up and we see that the crowlet had passed away underneath the eaglet from suffocation. The eagle parents did nurture the crowlet while it was in the nest. RIP little one! 💔💔

    We live in a fallen world, where there is so much pain and sorrow...
    I still can’t quite articulate adequately what I’m learning about suffering, and willful evil, and looming death, but this situation was a tragedy of errors...
    all I can do for my grief over this death is to give it to God in prayer....
    Job chose to bless the Lord in the face of unimaginable tragedies and persecutions, and my heart chooses to also bless the Lord, saying, as did Job, “Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
    22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.”
    Jesus promises to comfort those who mourn, and to heal the broken-hearted...we as witnesses to this tragedy, can be confident knowing that that beloved baby crow is with God now...
    God is love, and in the hereafter, there is no more pain or sorrow or suffering...
