Since my last video about the British royal line of succession, there have been a few happy additions, and one sad and significant loss, Queen Elizabeth II who died on September 8th, 2022 at the age of 96. Now that her son, King Charles III sits on the throne lets take a look at the updated line of succession. Along the way, I’ll explain how the order is determined and the titles each royal has, many of which have just changed in the wake of the Queens’s death.
King Charles III of the UK
1. William, Prince of Wales
2. Prince George of Wales
3. Princess Charlotte of Wales
4. Prince Louis of Wales
5. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
6. Prince Archie
7. Princess Lillibet
8. Prince Andrew, Duke of York
9. Princess Beatrice
10. Sienna Mapelli Mozzi...
...up to number 60 in the succession.
CORRECTIONS: Senna and Tane Mahuta Lewis (35 and 36 in the succession) are half Māori and are of Polynesian decent (Not Asian).
Prince Edward is labeled Duke of Cambridge. That should read Earl of Wessex.

I've just read Harry and Megan have been moved down in the line next to Andrew? If this is true, can you please cover this?
@@nobodyimportant3909 Meghan is not in line to the throne, she is not a child of the Royal family. Harry is now fifth in line to the throne, he has gone up a notch since the Queen died. His son Archie is 6th in line and Lilibet, 7th. Prince Andrew is now 8th in line, hope that helps.
That explains everything about this mistake.
Great suggestion!
@@Richardsonprincess00 what mistake?
you should do a series about european nobilities that technically aren’t part of their countries anymore, but the families still exist. an example being princess beatrice’s in-laws being part of italian nobility
Oh yes as an Italian I'd love that. Too bad all of our kings sucked.
The late queen had cousins who are Brazilian and are descendants of Victoria. I don't think they have any titles though. My late aunt's husband was a baron who was 4th cousin to her late majesty lived out his life on Cape Cod. Not sure if that counts.
It would be cool, but, counting only German, there's like a gazillion of small houses to talk about. Maybe she could just narrow it down to the biggest/ more famous- Hannover, Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony. With Italy it is the same, as before the unification almost region had their own family- Savoia, Parma, Two Sicilies...
I agree that you should try to do something on other royal families. I would love one on Queen Margrethe of Denmark who canceled most of her 50th Jubilee celebrations for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, her cousin.
In many British royal family weddings or funerals, their cousins from German houses like the Hanover, the Saxe Coburg, the Hohenzollern, the Baden have been always invited despite no longer reign because they still have their own organisations that deal with their inheritance to the hereditary titles and estates.
UPDATE:
*Anne and Edward are now Counsellors of State. Parliament added them at Charles' request.
*Edward was granted the Edinburgh title, but only for his lifetime. James is now known as the Earl of Wessex.
HIP HIP HOORAY 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Isn’t Princess Beatrice’s husband a count in the Italian nobility? I know they do not have nobility any more but by Italians laws, isn’t Sienna an Italian Countess by that right?
Her husband has an older son that will inherit the title ( even though as you said Italy doesn't recognise nobility titles anymore).
Too bad. I'd be a Duchess from my Savoy ancestors
@@desilanni2 thought you yanks didn’t “ do Royalty “ 🙄🇬🇧
@@alsc1806 actually his son can not inherit the title because he was born outside of wedlock. Beatrice's husband never married the mother of his son. So his daughter will inherit the title one day instead of the his son.

From William I
Who conquered the land,
To William II -
Was that “accident” planned?
Henry I
Left the succession in doubt,
Leaving Stephen and Matilda
To battle it out.
Henry II
Brought justice and law.
Richard I
Went crusading for war.
Then came John,
His reign was a shower,
Though Henry, his boy,
Would cling on to power.
Edward I
Hammer of the Scots
Poor Edward II -
That poker looked hot!
Edward III,
What a chivalrous reign,
Besting the French
On every campaign!
Richard II
For his tyranny and sin,
Was duly deposed
By Henry, his kin.
Henry V took England to war,
The conqueror! The Victor!
Of Agincourt.
The wars of the roses
Went back and forth
‘Till poor Henry sixth
Fell to Edward the fourth.
Edward V should have
Ascended the throne.
But his usurping uncle
Took it for his own!
Then one day
At Bosworth field
The mighty Plantagenets,
Did finally yield.
Uniting the roses
Of white and red
Henry VII
Struck King Richard dead!
Henry VIII
Took wife after wife
Edward and Mary -
Religion and strife!
Good Queen Bess
Brought England her glory,
But we must borrow from Scotland
To continue the story!
James I
Ruled Celts and Angles
Avoiding the thorniest
Of political tangles.
With Charles I
Defeat did beckon,
But it was time to party
With Charles II.
James II -
The last Catholic ever.
William and Mary,
Took the throne together.
After Anne, the Queen
(Ignoring Jacobite defectors)
We turn to Germany
And Hanovers’ electors.
George I -
Missing in action.
The second no better -
The head of a faction!
The third seized power
Whatever the cost.
Madness descended!
America lost!
George IV
And a time of disgrace.
William the sailor
Helped to save face.
Queen Victoria,
A new age was dawning.
But little could amuse
An empress in mourning!
Edward VII
Of gregarious fame.
George V
Changed the family name.
Edward VIII
Who followed his heart
Burdening a brother
Not born for the part.
George VI
Our strength at war
What nobler a servant,
Could have served any more?
With Elizabeth the great
Now Queen in the heavens,
We cry, “God Save the King!”
And a new reign beckons.

@@Splexsychiick Agreed.
You get a big enough family and every day of the year will be important to one of them. That kid will be just fine. More concerned the girl will be confused with her cousin Savannah, one of Anne's grandchildren, as the names are similarly sounding nontraditional.

Hello my lovely friend
These orders of succession and rules for them are online.

Very informative and enlightening.
One correction the title Defender of the Faith, was given to Henry V111 by the Pope, for Henry's thesis on religion against Martin Luther. This was before The break with the Roman catholic church
The "original" title of Defender of the Faith was given by the pope to Henry VIII, but once he broke with Rome it was removed. A new Title "Defender of the Faith" was given by the newly created Church of England as the Monarch was the defacto Governor of the Church (of England) and the one defending the Church. That is the meaning behind the Title used today. A lot of Catholics seem to get snide about the title, but the Catholic title is certainly not in use. It was removed.
Changed the faith, kept the title.
Yes, Lady Davina (not Davinia) has two children, whose father is Maori. Senna was the first person whose place in the succession was directly impacted by the change to Absolute Primogeniture; her younger brother Tane was born after her but did not displace her. Senna is Senna Kowhai (pronounced Korf-eye) and Tane is Tane Mahuta (pronounced Tarn-e (with a short 'e' sound) Mahuta (pronounced Mah-hoo-ta). Incidentally a kowhai is a tree with beautiful yellow bell-shaped flowers and Tane Mahuta is the Maori God of the Forest, as well as a specific giant totara tree in the Northland forest in New Zealand. Kia ora!
Congratulations on a splendid explanation of the Line of Succession. I wanted to point out two things: (i) The Reformed Succession to the Crown Act 2013 removed the disqualification of Royal Family members marrying Roman Catholics, thus Royals who had married Roman Catholics, but who themselves had not converted to Roman Catholicsm, were reinstated to the Line of Succession eg HRH Prince Michael of Kent. (ii) Prior to her marriage with Peter Phillips (The Late Queen`s first grandson) in 2008, Autumn Kelly converted to the Church of England, ensuring her husband did not lose his place in the Line of Succession. The Reformed Succesion to the Crown Act 2013 was irrelevant in this instance, as it did not exist.

Hello my lovely friend
Hello Graham, how are you doing today.
There were a few inaccuracies in this video
1. The Commonwealth is more than just the countries that have the British Monarch. South Africa, a republic, is part of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth isn't just the countries that the British Monarch is the head of state for; it's more a loose association of countries that have large British influence. King Charles III is only head of the Commonwealth because they agreed he would be
2. The pronunciation of Rothesay. It's pronounced ROTH-see
3. The names of the monarchs aren't automatic. When ascending the throne, the monarch is allowed to choose any of his/her names to be his/her official name. Example: King George VI went by Prince Albert until he became King as well as Queen Victoria having gone by Alexandrina until she became Queen.
I love your videos. So eloquent and knowledgable.
😂😂😂🇬🇧
Henry VII was NOT illegitimate. He came from an illegitimate line. But, he himself, was not illegitimate.
Well he was born inside a legal marriage, so he was not a "bastard", but he WAS illegitimate because his blood line and relation to the crown was not "pure". It's not the same
They were legitimized, however they were not 'allowed' to succeed or become a ruler.
Well he married THE legitimate heiress
@@patrickjeffers7864 Err no.. Elizabeth’s father Edward lVs marriage to the Wydeville woman was found to be not legal pre marriage contract to Eleanor Butler ..( hence Richard lll being King ) .. thus any offspring were not in the Royal line .. Do wish yanks would get their facts right… or leave Our History alone . 🙄🇬🇧
Henry VII came to power by slaying the crowned King Richard III whose corpse was found under a parking lot in Leicester just a couple of years ago. There can be no doubt that Henry VII was an illegitimate usurper of the throne.

Defender of the Faith was a title Pope Leo X gave to Henry VIII back in 1521 for his defense of the Roman Catholic Church against the threat posed by Martin Luther. It represented Henry's piety and loyalty to the Church. When Henry broke with the Catholic Church and established the Church of England with himself as its head, he kept the title. It has been passed down to every Monarch since 1544.
There is speculation that at his coronation, King Charles will change it to 'Defender of the Faiths'. Will need to wait and see.
@@janblackhurst1652 It wouldnt make much sense since the king of england is literally the head of the anglican church, aswell as a political title its also a religious one, thats why catholics cant be monarchs, and though there is no specific law, I dont think muslims or jews could be too.
Partially true: The "original" title of Defender of the Faith was given by the pope to Henry VIII, but once he broke with Rome it was removed. A new Title "Defender of the Faith" was given by the newly created Church of England as the Monarch was the defacto Governor of the Church (of England) and the one defending the Church. That is the meaning behind the Title used today. A lot of people get confused about the title, but the "Catholic title" is certainly not in use. It was removed and replaced. Same wording, different meaning.
Small note: Queen Victoria had no _full_ siblings, i.e. no siblings who had the same mother (Victoria of Saxe-Coberg-Saalfeld) and father (Edward, Duke of Kent & Strathearn) as she did.
She did, however, have two half siblings from her mother's first marriage to Emich Karl, Prince of Leiningen, Carl (Prince of Leiningen after his father died in 1814) and Feodora (Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg).
Everyone seems to forget about her two (German!) older half siblings, and that she was raised with her first language being German, until John Conroy realised how bad it would look if a future monarch (that they were trying to distance from the licentious, improvident Georgians, aka her grandparents, uncles, &c, who were much hated for being so very German and _"un-English")_ to retain the German-ness, via her accent, that was a calling card of her predecessors.
That said, she and Albert preferred to converse in German, as she was very much a native speaker. (People tend to forget that the reason Prussia and all those minor german states and monarchies existed is that Germany is _a lot fekning bigger than the UK,_ especially England alone (because the world seems to forget that Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland are wholeass different countries to England, and "British" is not really an identity-well, it is, but it's like when you realise that "American", whilst usually used to refer to the people of the USA, can technically include any country south of-and including-Canada).
Anyway, TL;DR: Victoria wasn't an only child, and please stop claiming she was.
Interestingly, Germany in the early 20th century was ruled by grandkids from both Victoria and Feodora. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Victoria's grandson and Empress Augusta (Wilhelm's wife) was Feodora's granddaughter.
So 2nd cousins married. Is that correct? And their children would then be a bit more than just 3rd cousins.
In terms of succession, she was an only child.
she was the only child of both her parents, the legitimate one for the throne
You are saying ALOT, without saying ALOT!!

Small correction, Senna and Tāne aren't of asian descent. Their father is Māori, which is a people who came from the pacific region. Also their names are pronounced "senn-ah" and "tah-nay" You're missing the flat accent (ā) in Tāne's name. Their mother's name is Davina, not Davinia. You've also got Edward listed as Duke of Cambridge for some reason. I thought maybe that was there because HMTQ offered Edward that Dukedome but he wanted Earl of Wessex due to a Shakespear character with the same title. A clarification about the accession of Queen Victoria. She was not an only child. I have always found it interesting that Princess Mary's descendants are excluded from joining their cousins for balcony appearances and so on. I've always wondered if it was because Mary was close to her brother Edward VIII and got frozen out by the Queen Mother over it.
I think that was the case. Mary pretended she was ill to not go to Elizabeth and Phillip's wedding. When really she was salty that Edward was not invited.

This was amazing & very informative. Thank you 🙏🙏💜💜👏👏🔥🔥💪💪
Fascinating! Cleared up a lot of things for me as an American.
Considering William's significant popularity in the UK I don't think Wales is going to vote to bar him from being their prince of Wales and I predict that as long as he behaves himself, and all indications thus far is that he will, George will also not be barred from being Prince of Wales by the Welsh people. Though I think it would help matters if George had some Welsh ancestry. He probably does as most Brits have at least a little Welsh DNA.
Most brits have Welsh dna? Eh where’d you get that from😂 I’m 0% Welsh, like almost all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, and only small area of England has welsh dna as far as I know - excluding the odd cases here and there of course
Edward of Caernarvon, although he didn't have Welsh ancestory he was just born there. His parents were Edward I and Elenore of Castile, not quite Wales.
Since Henry VII, all monarchs have Welsh blood, even James VI and I (Scotland and England) has Welsh blood being the great-great-grandson of Henry VII. So... meh!
Oh, and I'm Welsh. I'm fine with it. Kinda. My family is descended from Llewelyn the Great. So... I'd not mind them throwing the title away in my direction... but that's not going to happen, lol.
Henry VII himself was not illegitimate. His line or right to the throne came through his mother Margret Beaufort who's line was Illegitimate but was legitimized but barred from the throne.
You do great commentary. Your voice is soothing

My family have Catholic Royal lines in Spain. My great grandmother's great grandmother was Maria Christina of the Two Siciles. Her son Fernando is my grandmother's great grandpa. He was a Catholic man,but had to apparent illegitimate child named Lucia. Her mother (Alice)was married to a German Ambassador named Christopher, and they lived in Barcelona. Lucia believed Chris was her father, but when she was 15 her mother told her the truth. Lucia asked her mother to leave and never return or she would tell Chris that Alice cheated. However,Lucia wanted to meet her biological father. She went to meet Fernando, but he rejected to see her and asked her to leave. Lucia was upset, and came home to see that Alice lied and said Lucia had planned overthrow the family once she sided with Fernando. Lucia was shocked her mother would lie and her father believed it. She was thrown out the house and the family shipped her off to Marsielle. She decided to cut everything to due eith her family and became Protestant
Only discussing this with my children during QE2 funeral, I've shared with all 5 as a royalist and amateur historian, they should know as I now have grandchildren interested in the subject, but probably won't be taught this at school, and 5 of my 6 grandchildren are welsh, born into my family.

Imagine Meghan Markle as new queen consort of England - which is not completely impossible, suppose Prince William and his children die together in a plane crash.
Henry VIII did not create the title “Defender of the Faith” for himself. He was awarded the title in 1521 by Pope Leo X.
The UA-cam algorithm recommended you to me probably because I was watching a lot of useful charts hahaha however I must say you have a very calm and soothing voice that is perfect for the type of video you make and is excellent for listening to when I don't have to watch the video
Nicely done
Hopefully Parliament with change the statute to address the "Counsellor of State" problem inherited by the King.
I watched a series on UA-cam recently which you can find by searching "The Father-in-Law of Europe. It follows the line of King Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Margrethe's Great,Great,Grandfather, who's 6 children all married into royal houses all over Europe. It's a fascinating series that follows each of his children's descendants down to the present (or nearly) day. Of course, many of the children's children became Kings or Queens themselves, including Queen Alexandra of UK, Queen Maria Fedorova (Dagmar) of Russia, plus the monarchs of Sweden, Norway, etc. It gets rather confusing, but a genealogical tree, such as you've provided here, would be most helpful. Just an idea for your channel. I've watched the series several times, and it never fails to enthrall, because the descendants tell the family stories in their own words.
There is a documentary of queen Victoria and she put every one of her children married kings and or to in every royal house in Europe so lots of riyals have done this also queen Maria Theresa of Austria queen marie antionettes mother also has lots of children married into other royal houses as well

Lots of English people have some Royal Blood on them. Well, counting how much Charlie #2 and Edward #7 played around, I can believe that. Maybe you should make a video about Charles II and the Girls, and how, even when he didn't have any legitimate children and the crown passed to his brother, his lineage will be reinstated on the throne once William is King as Diana actually descended from one, maybe two, of Charles II's illegitimate lines.

In the second half of the 17th century, it was normal for a European monarch to have "mistresses" and numerous illegitmate children. Charles II just behaved as a monarch was supposed to behave in his time.
Thanks for all the info.
Hello Helen, how are you doing today.
❤ great information ❤
I'm a descendant of Edward III as well via Edmund, 1st Duke of York
The title "Defender of the Faith" was awarded to Henry VIII by the Pope when Henry wrote a rebuttal to Martin Luther in the 1520s. "Defensor Fidei" was not a title created by Henry VII, he just continued to use it in the Anglican Church and passed it down to protestant rulers.
Correct. Many previous English Kings also were granted this title by Popes.
I am getting unreasonably addicted to this to listen to while I play video games.
I love your Channel and your Content of your Channel. Keep it up 😊
This was fun. Thank you! I once found a countess in my ancestry, but I can't remember which monarch the came from. I'm curious to see what titles will be granted from KC3.
Still rooting for my guy Ralph to get the throne one of these days.
All hail king Ralph, first of his name lol
Wow that was a lot of information crazy how it's all kept in order with who is who and who receives a title and who does not.
Hello Angel, how are you doing today.
I enjoyed watching the Video 😊
Henry VII was not illegitimate. He won the monarchy by Richard III'S death in battle. His own lineage was a bit dicey
William III was invited to reign alongside his wife
As I remember, Henry's descent was through John of Gaunt (one of Edward III's sons), but I will have to double-check that.
The Duchess of Kent retired from official duties some years ago and then converted to Catholicism, which is probably why her children and some grandchildren are catholic. The Duke of Kent continued to carry out official duties including giving out the Wimbledon trophies until 2021 when Catherine took over as patron to the All England Club. He was the chancellor of the University of Surrey when I was a student there some 20 years ago. The Duke of Gloucester still carries out official duties and he walked behind the Queen’s coffin during the procession to lying to state and the processions for her funeral.
Brilliant vid
I really love your conclusion to this video! There is hope out there for 5,300 people (should there be a catastrophic tragedy).
Autumn Kelly converted to Church of England before her marriage to Peter Philips. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 is what eliminated the prohibition of marrying a Catholic.
Beatrice's husband doesn't have an English title. He has a Italian one
This is so interesting!!
Thank you for the information
Hello Sharon, how are you doing today.
Autumn Kelly converted to anglicanism before marrying Peter Philips (Meghan Markle also converted before her wedding).
Prince Michael of Kent lost his position in the succession when he married the Catholic Marie (current Princess Michael of Kent). When Queen Elizabeth changed the Letters Patent before the birth of Prince George, the rule about marrying a Catholic was changed which reinstated Prince Michael. However, although someone in the succession can marry a Catholic and retain their place in the queue, no Catholic can be King or Queen.
@@janblackhurst1652 yes but Autumn Kelly converted to Anglicanism before her wedding so Peter Philips did not marry a Catholic.
Also the law doesn't apply to only Catholics but all other faiths. To be in the line of succession you have to be Anglican.
Markle didn't !
I'm getting dizzy! Lindsay how did you do all that? You must have been up all night!
Thank you!
Extremely interesting!
