MSI Spatium M580 FROZR Review: The BEST PCIe 5 SSD so far

  • PCIe 5 SSDs promise crazy speeds and the MSI Spatium M580 FROZR is no exception. 14,600MB/sec is going to tear through your data, but a lot of these ultra-fast SSDs don't just require the latest motherboards, they get REALLY hot too. So much so that most models out there either require the addition of a large third party heatsink, or include heatsinks that barely keep them cool enough to prevent throttling.
Not so with the MSI Spatium M580 FROZR. It's huge heatpipe-equipped heatsink performs brilliantly allowing it to offer full PCIe 5 speeds all day long and with minimal airflow too. Without doubt it's the only PCIe 5 SSD that's actually worth buying if you need those speeds.
We've done temperature testing against other SSDs as well as benchmark numbers (sequential, random 4K and game access/load times to see just how it stacks up against the competition.

That vertical cpu air cooler directing air downward towards the VRMs and SSD can't have hurt either. The MSI Spatium fins are placed perpendicular to the side to side airflow of most cases and closed off to any airflow that isn't up and down. So the heat goes to the CPU, I guess. Not many fans can make it past the graphics card to produce good up and down airflow near the SSD area. I wonder why they set the fins up vertically. Speeds are off the chart as long as you have a vertical CPU fan blowing down on it from a vertical CPU cooler... Who has such a tame CPU that they can use a vertical air cooler to cool this and also has a gen 5 SSD at the same ??

Sir personal tip from a subscriber viewpoint, I think you need to have a editor for thumbnail and a nice camera setup. I have ideas to improve the growth of the channel

is it possible to take the heatsink off and use it for any 2280 drive or is it glued to it? I can't find any information about this anywhere.

Hi! It should be but sadly I don’t have it with me to confirm. However you should check my M.2 heatsink grouptest specifically Thermalright’s model as it’s similar and can be bought separately ua-cam.com/video/XlRr7X6Y6iQ/v-deo.htmlsi=E1PMdES6jdj-hw_N

I will say, the Thermalright hr-10 (and the hr-9 pro if your airflow goes the right way) are a legitimate answer to pcie 5 heat. There are no doubt other brands with similar products too.

Completely agree - tested the HR-9 Pro in my recent group test ua-cam.com/video/XlRr7X6Y6iQ/v-deo.html

No point getting the M580 PCie 5 for your board dude as your board doesn't have any PCIe 5 M.2 slots. Its fastest are PCIe 4 and the included heatsink with the board will be plenty for whatever PCIe 4 SSD you choose.

The form factor was suited to gen 4, it is not suitable for gen 5 due to heat, time for a redesign. That heat sink looks like it is nearly touching the graphics card...

True, it does need a cooling/form factor upgrade. It's still a good 7mm away from the graphics card and that's with a large backplate too so not really an issue - it's designed to have clearance there and MSI should know as it makes graphics cards and motherboards too.
