  • Of the millions of mushroom species that exist on this planet, only 0.0004% of all mushrooms are considered to be Functional. The “functionality” of these special mushrooms is really just that they benefit humans in one way or another! In this video, we break down the benefits of the BIG FIVE functional mushrooms: Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, and Chaga. Each of these brings its own superpowers to the table and they are all fascinating in their own right. 🍄 #mushroomedu #mushroomuni #functionalmushrooms #fantasticfungi #lionsmane #reishi #chaga #turkeytail #cordyceps

I find myself wanting to disagree with the notion that there are 5 'functional' all-star fungi. I think the reason most mushrooms are not considered 'functional' is simply because lab work and clinical studies have not been carried out on the majority of them, and also because most of them do not lend themselves to cultivation, and therefore the potential for profit, and so there is little incentive to study them. Many more species than these 5 are already in use in different cultures around the world however, having been well studied, and used as medicinal ingredients in traditional medicine systems and in pharmaceuticals... Poria cocos, Tremella fusciformis, Phellinus linteus, Auricularia auricula, Grifola frondosa to name but a few. Their claimed actions are backed up by laboratory and clinical studies already in many cases. Additionally, almost all edible mushrooms are considered to be 'functional' foods; being rich in phenolic antioxidants, reducing glucose absorption in the small intestine via inhibiting alpha-glucosidase activity, helping to regulate cholesterol metabolism due to the presence of natural statins, supplying the body with ergothioneine, glutathione, linoleic acid, ergosterol, GABA, vitamin D and protein bound branched beta-glucans. Even common white button mushrooms supply these things... the perspective of there being 5 'stars' appears to be linked to the ready availability of those products as ingredients via the neutraceutical industry, and could be driven by profit, not medicinal activity, scientific discovery, or their use as traditional medicines, which would completely change the emphasis. The 5 mushrooms discussed are brilliant and useful, but so are many of the others.

Tremella is a great mushroom. Its actually also great used as a natural beauty product.
More potent hydrating for the skin than synthetic hyaluronic acid you find in tons of face cream.
Plus no side effects like hyaluronic acid. Which can happen if you have sensitive skin or a weaker immune system.

The only info on how much is in each capsule is "1 g" of the mushroom, but I take 2 of the capsules almost every day. I do forget on occasion, but if I forget for 3 or 4 days, the brain fog and neuropathy come back. It took maybe a week, if I remember correctly, for it to take effect. Not sure about the mechanics of it all. I don't know if it'll help with the effects of a pinched nerve, but it sure helps with my issues. Good luck to you, and God bless.

@Jade Blair, Hi, your masters sounds interesting! Is it a biochemistry masters? Please could you give a citation for this statement as it would be really useful to me. I think the key question I've got going on is whether it would continue to do so if not grown on the host... or would epigenetics just come into play and turn the process off? The presence of a pathway does not equate with active transcription leading to production of the metabolites. Many genes in all organisms are capable of switching on and off, or upregulating and downregulating, many different biochemical pathways. They do not all take place at once. I think what is needed is an assay for these terpenoids to be performed on chaga mycelial biomass grown on oat-grain substrate, vs chaga conk biomass grown on living birch tree, for example. That would remove all doubt. It might not be a simple case of are they present or not. It might be more about whether they are present in useable quantities or not. Maybe this work exists already... I'd be really happy to be shown this if that is the case. Betulin and betulinic acid are only a small part of the picture of biologically active metabolites when it comes to chaga (as I'm sure you will know), with other chaga specific compounds coming into play. Inotodiol has been demonstrated to be an immune checkpoint inhibitor for example... it could be really important, and there are others. Once again we don't know in all cases whether these are host specific metabolic pathways or their production is upregulated (or even downregulated) in connection with host metabolism in some way. It seems like more research is definitely going to be needed on these things as there are too many unknowns at present.

Lion's Mane is rare in the wild where I live in Eastern Canada, but its North American cousin Hericium americanum (aka bear's head tooth) is quite common and just as delicious (sliced and fried in butter, what a delicacy!)
Hericium americanum has not been studied as extensively as Hericium erinaceus but it is generally accepted they have the same functional properties.

Dan Bows I can help you. I am a member of a company that is considered the first in the world to grow organic reishi mushrooms. I use it and give it to patients. It is excellent for patients with cancer, multiple sclerosis, blockage of the arteries and all incurable diseases until the liver is saturated. The reishi mushroom has two types, the first type is four months old, expels toxins from the body and cleans the cell, and the second is four weeks old, transports oxygen to organs, renews cells and restores them. Capsules and drink water a lot to help expel toxins. No breakfast until two hours later. No sugar. Milk and gluten in the second week, two hours before dinner. The same method is followed in the evening. Symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, and even pressure can be disturbed, as the body fights viruses. Cordyceps mushrooms are excellent for everything related to the reproductive system and liver. Lung, heart, varicose veins and arterial obstruction Excellent for prostate Excellent for kidney failure Excellent for cirrhosis of the liver The one I am a member of eworld.dxn2u.com/index.php?r=account%2Fregisterb

Just wanted to make a correction here - at around the 7:40-7:45 mark is the claim that adenosine is “used to make cellular energy”, which is inaccurate. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is involved in energy production, so I’m assuming that adenosine is being conflated with ATP here. Although ATP is a derivative of adenosine, these are two different (but important) compounds with different (and important) functions. Adenosine promotes sleep, vasodilation, etc. and is an important component of homeostatic regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. Caffeine promotes wakefulness/alertness by INHIBITING adenosine. So yeah…adenosine itself won’t give you energy; it will put you to sleep. ATP is involved in a number of important cellular metabolic processes.

When first getting into mushrooming I found a lot of chaga and long story short, chaga along with cocao that I was mixing it with contain a lot of oxylates which some are sensitive to. Oxylate crystals built up in my joints and kidneys and gave me a lot of trouble. Actually had to go to a urologist who didn't think my urine analysis was correct cuz it had so many crystals. I would add chanterelles to your list as they're delicious and if you turn them gill side up and expose them to the sun, they can absorb up to 10x the amount of vitamin D that they already contain which is key cuz most people are D deficient.

Since when does ayahuasca or dmt contain any form of “neurodendritic growth factor compounds”? 🧐 How, exactly could dmt even have said compounds when it is a single molecule, a single compound. 🤔 By definition it doesn’t contain ANYTHING other than dimethyltriptammine. 😱 And ayahuasca is only adding some maois to the dmt, often harmine, harmaline and other similar maois. 😒
Anyway, if I’m mistaken I’d very much appreciate if you’d steer me in the right direction to find out more about said compounds being in dmt. Still can’t understand how that can be possible, but interested to find out if it is.
