"Robert Goldman vs. Gita Press" - Nityanand Misra

  • Robert Goldman is considered the most prestigious Sanskrit scholar of the past 50 years in the Western academy. This is the first part of a 3-part series in which Nityanand Misra dissects Goldman's translations of Ramayana. This is in line with the Indian tradition of commentaries and critiques of prior scholars. Goldman's Ramayana translations are used worldwide as the standard interpretation by English speaking academics. Interestingly, the Modi government's Indian Council of Cultural Relations (part of Ministry of External Affairs) gave Goldman the highest Sanskrit award in 2017. The Indian government specifically cited his Ramayana translation as the accomplishment for which we was given this award. Certainly, Indian Sanskrit experts should offer their critical purva-paksha of such a Bhishma Pitama of Western Indology. Nityanand Misra shows that Gita Press' translation is far superior.

@@ashamednature3339 Stop copy pasting in every comment like an idiotic moron, without proper evidence to show.
I have brought all the Upanishads from Gita Press and at my home we also have Shiva Purana and they perfectly fine and understandable.
There is not one translator in Gita Press, there are several scholars who do translation, and each is published separately. They also do the translation of different commentaries as well, the commentaries that have been done by Adi Shankharacharya, Abhinavguapta, Madhavacharya etc.
And to understand any Sanskrit text even if its translation, one needs to have prior knowledge of the texts, what they are about to expect, the other works of the commentator on which his works his based on, for eg: Vedanta or Kashimiri Shaivism or Advaita etc. In several cases you just can't pick up a text and start reading and expect to understand everything, one needs to understand the context and the foundation on which the texts are based.

These so called western scholars (I think) know the language but have a different agenda to diminish the value of Indian culture and civilization. This has been an on going trouble. Some of it is due to religious thinking and some just due to a pure phobia...Hindu-phobia.

O-M-G! Sri Nityanand Misra's erudition, articulation, and restraint is THE gold standard for critiquing in general & Sanskrit translations in particular. I must say I have never before come across such a tempered & clinical scholarly analysis in my life. Not one wasted word here or there... and no nastiness! And his humble demeanor wins all! 🙏🙏🙏
Rajiv-ji, I hope Misra-ji is in your Home Team & pray that he doesn't get poached by the anti-India forces. This priceless gem just cannot be lost at any cost. Once Pollock is done with his multi-million-dollar poisoned translation of our 500 Sanskrit texts (commissioned by the Murthy Foundation), this exercise must be done on them as well.

Last year I went through the whole of Valmiki Ramayan, And though read the original Sanskrit text only, I took help from the Hindi translation to clear a few doubts. I didn't know about some Sanskrit words and could understand from this Hindi Translation. I often post in my blogs excerpts from this great Classic. I have translated few English and Sanskrit texts into Hindi, but I don't think I'm a qualified or professional scholar. While viewing this video I had fortunately the text with me and followed the five shlokas as narrated here one by one. Sri Nityanand Misra deserves all admiration for this great attempt . Regards!

always lacked the "purushartha" required to comprehend indian knowledge.

15 minutes into the video and I have now already started to see how the so called scholars of Sanskrit, are either careless in translating it correctly or it is their apathy towards the language which motivates them to leave the translation with so many errors. If Sanskrit is to be translated it must be done very carefully, without distorting the beauty/rasa of the original text and it's time that we Indians should take the responsibility to own the department of translating and scrutinizing the translation done by others for the rest of the world. Excellent, I am impressed with Mr. Nityananda's knowledge of Sanskrit. It proves that only Indians should have the authority to translate Sanskrit for the rest of the world.

What an enlightening video ... and Nityanand's knowledge of Sanskrit is great, the pronunciation perfect. One aspect I want to ask about - Nityanand mentioned in passing that he was in touch with Robert Goldman. I am curious to know if the contents of this video had been brought to his notice, and what his response was? His response will reveal the true intention behind Goldman's commentary on Valmiki Ramayan.

This is scholarship at a very high level, and a real pleasure to listen to. Even without being a Sanskrit scholar, I have sufficient Sanskrit vocabulary from my mother tongue Telugu to understand what is being discussed. Shri Nityananand Mishra's dissection of Mr. Goldman's work has real implications for arresting the propagation of scholarly errors in works of Samskritam. The longer the errors propagate, the harder the record gets to correct.

Very big Indologist expert in Western world means a juvenile in front of Indian Vedic Indologists.
In Western world they are big because we haven't presented ourselves to them or we limited to ourselves. Thanks to vivekananda and srila prabhupad kind of Exemplaries, who introduced actual Indology to western audiences.

I am reading the Gita press version and learning samskrtam at samskrtaBharati. The Gita press version is far far superior to Goldman. It incredible quality at an absurdly cheap price. I would gladly pay 10 times the current price of this book.
Goldman is a watered down translation . It is worthless if you are trying to learn and decipher word by word meanings from the translation- and neither is the “spirit” of the translation close to the original.
    I fully agree with NithayanandJi.

It is like first grade student trying to interpret a book of graduation level, who doesn't understand the complexities involved.
And the later generations blindly taking up those interpretations to be true.Leading to a recipe of disaster.
It brings a caution for seekers of true knowledge.
    Thank-you

I request each serious person here to please read the two threads where this mini-series with Nityanand is being discussed. These threads are in a forum of 1,000+ Sanskrit scholars:
    Thread 1: groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bvparishat/L6jZbevNn9w
    Thread 2: groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bvparishat/RpSjykp35OA
It is important to nurture and encourage our scholars, to facilitate that their work reaches both insiders & outsiders:
    Insiders to spread awareness of the biases and encourage more persons to follow the movement we started;
Outsiders to draw them into debate and take our counter arguments deeper into the kurukshetra - as Nityanand is doing in these two threads.
    Rajiv

Without doubt, Gita Press has done a great service to Hinduism. The entire Hindu society must be indebted to them. We should not expect the foreigners (Christians) to do justice to our religion. On the contrary, they will try very hard to protect Hindus and Hinduism in a very poor light and inferior to Christianity. We should not walk into their trap.
Long live Gita Press and long live Seth Jaidayal Goindka and Bhai Hanuman Prasad Poddar.

I totally agree with Danny B.Another profound example of misinterpretation is how 'yoga' is treated with in the western world and in most part of modern India towards more material benefits, contrasting it with the original meaning(Yoga means:'Union with the supreme'). Which puts more emphasis on knowing ones true nature,no doubt physical health is also important in yoga practices but not the ultimate goal.Physical health is given importance only to the extent of it being helpful to know oneself.
