You don't have to spend hundreds to get a folding bike that you can use for an international cycle tour. Second hand folding bikes can be excellent value if you are prepared to do any repairs yourself! Small repairs and replacing any worn out parts can be done with simple tools and these light weight bikes can be stored easily in a cupboard or under a bed.

My man!
Your method of loading the rear rack works like a charm.
Trucker in the US with a folding bike and I was struggling with getting supplies while on off duty and can't move my truck.
I struggle no longer.
Thanks.
Awesome mate! Its cool to hear how useful these things are. All the best for your adventures!!
I love when the world and people are closer because I’m not looking at them from inside a cage. The weather, the smell of the grass, everyone talking, a new town humming, great video!
Where I live, theft is a big problem. Being able to bring the bike into the market with me is very important
Damn thats a shame. Most places in the world are fine for leaving a bike outside the supermarket, I've done it plenty, even with bags on it. A large lock is certainly something i carry on my travels - cheap insurance policy!
Like your video, thanks for sharing! I own a folding bike myself and already did a short camping trip. But I have no clue how to repair, change parts of it and maintain it myself. Most videos on UA-cam are not on a beginner level or they are for different bikes. And I was not able to change a tire myself, although I found videos which showed me how. Incas simply not strong enough! 😂 I need to practice.
Cheers! Good on you for fixing your own bike, its just a matter of having a go at it then gaining confidence, and as always consult a youtube video for problem solving advice! ua-cam.com/video/8rzG0ItAyhY/v-deo.html
Also On long bike tours folding bikes are great because if something does happen that you can’t fix on the roadside you can get a ride from anyone. Full sized touring bikes take up a lot of space and you need someone with a truck to stop and take you to the nearest town. With folding touring bikes- a small compact car would be sufficient to take you to the next town as your bike can fold and fit into a small trunk. Lastly, the most important benefit of a folding bike is its anti theft qualities….since the bike is always with you and not locked up somewhere, there is no chance of it getting stolen.
Its so good, I cant think of a better way to get around. Plus for me its the cheapest way too!
I tour on a Bike Friday all over Central and South America; currently in Mexico. Stay with 20 inch wheels as I used to tour on a Brompton and the tires/tubes/parts are not readily available.
Yeah I heard that from Gianni's channel too he carries spare 16" tires with him, thats too inconvenient for me. 20" tires, wheels, tubes are available everywhere i've ridden. Wow! do many people ride down there?
I love watching your videos and how you also make bikepacking so accessible, no necessity for an expensive folder like a Brompton. I’m using a 10 year old 20 inch Tern D8 and it’s ideal. Not the smallest when folded but small enough and super comfortable.
Glad you like them! I hace rode the d8 its a very light and capable bike. All the best for your adventure!
I love this channel
Folding bicycles are definitely one of the most versatile forms of human powered transportation ever created.
And somehow this is also the cheapest!
Folding bikes rule. I have a Tern Verge X18. It's a folding road bike. It's fast light and super portable. And made to last. Had it for 7 years. And have only had to change tyres, brake pads. Gear cassettes and chains. Really well made..
Awesome! Good value for 7 years of transport!!
I'm buying my first folding bike tomorrow from craigslist, and couldn't have found your channel at a better time. I absolutely love this channels mission and what you do. Might just have to try a trip like you.
If I wasn't sold on getting this bike, now I am
Welcome aboard! Im sure you will enjoy having a folding bike & traveling around the best and cheapest way. Theres 190 videos here, plenty on how to get parts, maintenance & more. enjoy the ride!
@@hobocyclist Awesome, checking em out now! Mine will be an Origami Gazelle for $200(normally like 500), I think it's a decent deal for a 28lb bike with fenders, rear rack, 20in wheels and disk brakes
@@drewdorkhead looks like a good deal. That kind of frame is sold under a bunch of different names, youll be able to swap parts with lots of other models to customize it to your needs. Lots of fun to be had!
@@drewdorkhead please make a video about your thoughts, not enough Origami Bikes content out there. I ended up going with a Zizzo from Andy's recommendation plus some others. Plus, I'm in a folding bike desert, so while there are 20" parts, not many used full folding bikes yet locally.
I like my Zizzo a lot, but I haven't had a chance to go bikecamping yet between family commitments, though I've been able to use some of Andy's camping tips. I'm hoping to combine a me ride + the family drive type camping adventure before the end of the year if I can.
I was far from buying a folding bike until I saw your videos :D
👍👍👍
How do you plan your route to avoid high traffic areas? What do you especially look for on the map. Love your videos but don’t want to get run over!

Mr. Repeat himself 😊
Mate what criticism? your channel doesn't have any videos
@@hobocyclist nice video Andy! loved the tips and tricks. keep up the good work. you inspire me to travel more on my folding bike Btwin tilt 120
When the bike is folded and you're using public transport, can you show how you carry the stuff and your bike. Thank you
You can see here in this video @ 04:38 - ua-cam.com/video/av4SNJFOFzI/v-deo.html we take fully loaded folding bikes on the tube
@hobocyclist thank you. Looking for a folding bike. Brompton not realistic, but what do you reckon to dahon/ tern. Brompton are steel, the others aluminium
I'm curious about trying one out, but I am tall (1.93m) so I don't know if it would be comfortable. Also, many of them say 105kg max rider weight which is how much I actually weigh leaving no leeway. How tall are you, and how much do you weigh?
Borrow a folding bike and take it for a ride, thats the best way to see how it fits for you. Im 1.8m tall 75kg. A full size bike might be more comfortable especially if youve got long legs
Do you use a light during night ride?
Yeah I sometimes ride at night but not too much, when I do I use a a head torch / headlamp the kind I use is black diamond storm amzn.to/3WMQRyR
I have a folding bike and thought I would like it but I feel it is too small for me. I am used to riding a road bike and mountain bike so I assume that is why I feel I am too compressed on my folding bike. I am 68 in tall or about 172 cm tall. My folding bike has 20 in wheels. I have tried adjusting my seat height but I can not adjust it enough to make a difference for me. How tall are you or anyone else reading my comment who loves folding bikes?
Hi Diane, I’m 180cm & ride 20” wheel bike. Not all folding bikes are designed for taller people but many times adjusting the seat & handlebars will help. All the best! 🚲👍🌲
