  • Deciding on a tractor purchase is far from easy as "apple pie" and can really get your "goat". I revisit Lincoln to thank him for the use of his rake. We discuss some of our likes with our compact tractor and some pet peeves. I really want to hear your thoughts particularly if you had a one series and decided to go bigger. Your opinions will greatly help those out there looking to make another purchase or their first.

I have nearly 600 hours on my 2038R and have zero regrets. Kind of the best of both wolds as the footprint is still reasonably small and it has really good power. There will be times I wish I had a 1025 and times I wish I had a 3 or4 series but for a happy medium the 2038r fits the bill

So I think I can speak to this with a fair bit of knowledge. My dad and I both own property and heat with wood. He bought a 1025r and at first I laughed at it but as I used it and saw what he was getting done with it I fell in love. I ended up buying one too then my dad decided to upgrade and the dealer talked him into a 2025r. I can tell you from experience that was a mistake. There is no appreciable difference other than bigger tires so less ground impact. It was long he admitted his mistake and looked to upgrade again. We looked into it together and landed on the 2038r. Now that’s a game changer. That tractor is definitely worth the upgrade. Much better lift capacity. Way more power. Great tractor. I still have my 1025r and it does what I need it too but if was going to upgrade the 2038r would be the machine for me. Note: I have the backhoe my dad does not but he has a kabota mini x ( very mini )

I skipped both 1025R and 2025R and bought the 2038R back in 2021. I am very happy with the 2038R and it has done everything I need around my property. A couple of times, I wish I had a 3-series tractor due to the 2038R lift capacity. Sometimes, I wish to have a tractor with a cabin. However, I believe the 2038R is a great tractor for a small farm.

I guess I’m the exception. I bought a 3033R power reverser. Great machine but it was big and heavy. I found myself limiting when I would use it especially in the Spring and late Fall when the ground would get soft. The loader controls were buttery smooth no matter the RPM’s. The engine power and loader lift capacity was amazing. I had to load the rear tires and use my ballast box to keep the rear tires on the ground.
For what I paid for it I felt it was sitting more than I was using it. It was during the height of the pandemic so when I decided to trade down I got everything I paid for it back and went to a 2025R. I do miss the loader height and lift capacity but absolutely love the tractor. I use a Frontier 60” rear finish mower and the same brush hog you have. I like the ground clearance which is the biggest reason I bought it over the 1025R. No regrets.

So i went from a 1025r to a Kioti CK2620 and it was the best decision i ever made as far as tractors are concerned. The lift capacity feels nearly tripled, all my implements still fit fine, the tractor feels way more stable and all around more powerful. I think the lift capacity on my 24.5 horsepower Kioti exceeds the 3 series JD which is pretty wild
I think my favorite part about jumping from JD to Kioti is the fact i now have a skid steer quick attach front end and not the annoying proprietary JD quick attach. Which means WAY more options front implements at way cheaper prices. Just my 2 cents as a former JD super fan

I have the 1025R TLB. It is a 2019 and I have a bunch of attachments (front & rear). I do think about upgrading to the 2038R but if I go any bigger, the implements may not fit. Particularly the back hoe (I really don't want to spend that $$ again). All in all, the 1025R works well for me and it is just a "wish" to have something larger, not a need.
    Good luck with your decision.

    Had a 1023e and moved to a 2032R after about 2 years...I needed more lift capacity . I now have 400 hours on the 2032R and I love it...A 2025 is just a bigger 1025
...only thing I wish I had was a factory cab...it gets cold up here in Canada...Good luck

Tom, as being someone in their younger years thought that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence I've realized that it's not. I have a 2007 John Deere 2305 that I bought used with 400 hours on it. I've taken down 90 and 100 foot trees with it and it is a beast and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I also modeled my backhoe dolly off of the one that you built. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that if you want a bigger tractor and you can swing it then by all means go for it. But my advice is if it ain't broke why fix it? Well, God bless and have a great day.

I have a 2021 2025R with the Mauser cab. I would like to have had air conditioning but would be a 3 series and would not fit under a standard 7 ft garage door. The 2025R fits under the garage door even with a strobe light on top. I do like the 2025R with bigger tires and the self leveling loader. I wanted the cab tractor so I could be nice and warm when snow plowing. I have the 3rd function with a hydraulic angle loader mounted snow plow, rear blade (very handy when snow plowing), grapple (stays on the tractor most of the time), bucket & pallet forks & 7 Iron Mower Deck. I'm glad I didn't go with the 1 series. I have found the 2025R to be pretty stable even with the cab (rear tires are loaded with Rim Guard). I am thinking of getting 2-1/2" spacers for extra safety.

I love my 3025E. I use it mostly for the loader, bucket, grapple, forks and stump bucket. I have a small ranch with goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys and ducks. I live in North Florida so it's mostly at an idle and it gets my jobs done. I have no problem with the placement of the loader control lever. The engine in the 3025 has a lower operating rpm and more torque than the 1025.
My tires are loaded with water, like I said I live in Florida.
I would recommend the 3025 to anyone looking for a tractor, I'm 63 with stage 4 cancer and I can get on it with no problem.
    Thanks for the videos

I have been wating your channel for several years now, and saw your concerns about the 1025R being a little too small, and that you would have gotten a 2025R. I moved to Maine about 2 years ago, and purchased a 2025R for a 22 acer ranch and it does everything I need it to do. I haven't ran into a situation where the tractor wasn't able to do what I need it to do, and watching other owners of 2025R, I see them equally challenging their 2025R. As for your backhoe comment, I do wish I had a little more power as I have worked on removing several stumps, but I find it is more of technique than shier power and would believe it would be the same for a higher power tractor.
Love your videos and thank you for your work to the tractor/cabin community.

I purchased Kevin"s Hydros Plus for hydraulic and turbo kit for my 1025R which I bought in 2020. My application is a mountain ranch. The altitude already drops both torque and horsepower thus the turbo gain makes this JD very useful and the hydraulic diversion of 57% more force. I run spacers with dual wheels because of steep hills and need for a lot of traction in mud. I am not inexperienced in running tractors and front loaders and have run 3 yard Michigan machines and large JD's with 4 bottom plow and large discs. The 1025 with the added torque and hp is a perfect fit to my needs. The 1025 is easy to tow and not straining my truck or trailer.

I own a 1025R and 5075E. I bought my 1 series during the tail end of covid. I wanted a 2025R knowing the specs were the same as the 1025R but mostly wanted it for the larger tires. Bigger tires give you better clearance, better in snow performance, and better in loose material performance like gravel. The also give you much better ballast with fluid in the rear. It would have been an 8 month wait. So I bought the 1 series on the lot. I like it but still wish it was a 2 series. I have the big 5 for heavy work.

Had a 1025r for a year and traded it on a 2038r. I learned a bunch in that year I had the 1025r and when I ordered a 2038r I ordered it with rear remotes, MSL, turf tires and some other options. I'm really happy with my decision. I have a little over 5 acres that I mow in northern ohio and the bigger 72 inch deck helps alot too.

Started with the 1023e, loved it. Upgraded to 3025e, it was big upgrade from from the 1 series, mass, loader was very stout, I feel like your current implements would pair fine with the 3. Later upgraded to the 4044m, traded off for larger implements, I do not see the need to go larger myself but this 4 series is an absolute powerhouse with the ag tires, I would never go back to R4 tires after having the ag tire traction, this machine still runs out of traction before power but not without destroying the ground. I debated on buying the backhoe and ended up adding a mini excavator to the fold because it ultimately was not much more expensive than the BH75. I really enjoy the mini x because it's so much more capable than the tractor backhoe attachment. It has also led to many profitable side jobs. Good luck in finding your perfect tractor, mine has led me to the 4044m and the takeuchi miniX. I bought my 4044m from Courtney over at Goodworks Tractor, he was a real pleasure to work with and has good deals on low hour machines.

I jumped up to the 3033r when I got my tractor due to the size of hydraulic pump which was told was bit better. I got mine with a front loader and backhoe and have loved using it. My only thing is would have loved a cab but the $10,000 jump for cab wasn't worth it to me. I'm getting ready to buy a canopy for a few hundred and will be happy with and use all that spare money for car projects. As for loader control, mine is long/tall arm come from base of front of seat area and not on loader back brace. It is right where my right arm sits on arm rest. I also still need to get my 3rd function for loader and also want to get tilting setup from 3-point.

I now have a 1025r that took the place of a kioti ck2610. My grass mowing equipment (I mow about 7 acres of grass) was completely worn out and went to the JD thinking it would do both the chores and the mowing, which it has. It's been a very good tractor. But I certainly miss the hydraulic power, the hillside stability and the height of the kioti which was also an excellent tractor. I'm now considering buying another zero turn for the mowing and going back to kioti for a tractor.

I have a 2019 1025r and it has been great. I would like more power for snow blowing but for me the size is awesome for trailering. With a bigger tractor you have larger attachments and makes it tough to transport. If I did it again, I would get a 2025r. I would highly recommend a 3rd function and as many rear SCV's as possible. Hydraulic top link is almost a must!

I purchased a brand new 2022 1025r with the backhoe, I put 5 hours on that tractor, plowing snow with a frontier snow pusher with back drag. Then I continued to watch more UA-cam videos, one being tractor time with Tim when he compared the features of both the 1025r and the 2038r, I realized I wanted the bigger tractor so I called my dealer and traded the 1025r for a new 2038r with a backhoe and self leveling loader to get lift capacity. I had a belly mower for the 1025r, which I never got to use as I got the tractor in late fall, the only thing I did with the 1025r was push snow. When I bought the 2038r I thought thats to big to mow my 1.5 ac. Property, so I also bought a z545r for mowing. On the 2038r I had the dealer put on 3 rear remotes, front third function, had them remove the r4 tires and had the radial tires put on, had the tires loaded with beet juice. I run a rear hydraulic top link. I also had a hydraulic thumb put on the backhoe, have a box blade which I never used yet, I have forks, hydraulic grapple, man safety box, rear tool hauler (forgot the proper name) I have about 55 hours on the 2038r. I am located in Green Bay Wi.

Wow I paid 17,520 for my 2025r tractor and loader in spring of 2020. I sort of was interested in the 2032r but it was like 5600 more at the time. You might be happy keeping your 1025 and do some upgrades on it. A company Hydros plus has upgraded pumps and cylinders to give you more lift capacity. They are somewhat pricey but much cheaper than a new tractor. Just a thought!

I have a 1025R it works super good for all of my small jobs. I have 4 foot bush hog and a 4 foot tilt. I also have a 53 inch grapple from John Deere. My brother however has a 3033 R that has a cab on it he lives in Maine, and if you are digging out big stumps quite often this is a lot better is a lot more power. We put 200,000 pounds of rock in a big driveway and turnaround area last year and we used his tractor to smooth it all out before we built a barn on it. It worked super good and was really easy very comfortable. That’s all the information I can give you at this time.

I looked at all the different brands and models out there. After looking and reading about all the different brands, I went with the TYM T264 with a loader and backhoe no cab. I did have to drive 4 hours north of me to the dealer that had the TYM T264 he advertised on marketplace. He had it listed for $16,900. After two days of chatting with the dealer, he dropped the price to $16,400. After looking and driving the tractor, I ask the dealer how much more would a backhoe be. It was in my monthly budget so I bought it. It's a 2022, and I've had it for a year now, and I love the TYM T264 tractor. It is really overbuilt for its size tough.
I also watched Tony's Tractor Adventures, and it was his review of the TYM T264 that sold me on the T264. The lift capacity for the loader is 1386 lbs. That's another reason for the T264.

Finally got to view this one, I am way behind on videos! I strongly considered a 1025R, but decided I had no need for the mid-pto as I knew I didn't want a belly mower, and it seemed small for my property. Discussed my needs with my dealer, he moved me up to a 3025E and I haven't looked back, and most important, it was less than the 1025R so money for implements.. Heard what you said about the joystick location, it never has been an issue for me. The power is great, of course my property has an elevation change of maybe five feet. Glad I went with what I did.

We were mowing with the 2025 and 2032 but needed more lifting hight and power. 3033r i believe is to heavy for mowing as it ruts if driving in the same tracks. Ended up getting a zero turn. I loved my 2019 1025R with a belly mower, loader, and backhoe but I never used my mower and wanted something larger for moving dirt and greater lift capacity and lift height so I traded it in for a 2032R. It has a loader and a backhoe and is a beast. I'm able to use my 48" box blade and rotor-tiller and other 1025R attachements so I didn't have to replace my attachments. I looked at the 2038R but it's a lot more money and I didn't gain much for doing so. I'm very happy with my 2032R and should of went larger at the beginning but you know what they say about hind sight. I also ordered my new tractor with turf tires and love them as compared to the industrial tires. They have great traction and are easier on the grass. I have no problem pushing snow in the winter and moving dirt in the summer. You gotta love JD's 0% financing too. I hope this helps.

Box blade, forks, and tiller. Of course, I'd love a bigger tractor. However for me, the 1025r is the perfect size. I can get in tight spaces and I have the storage space for it. Was dead set on selling it and picking up a 2038r, had it all lined up at the dealer to go pick up my new 2038r with added options that I wanted, called the dealer the next day and said let’s do a 3039r instead, a lot better lift capacity on loader and 3pt, plus’s loader is just shy of 10’ lift height. The 3r seemed huge at first but after about 10hrs on it u feel right at home, I find the joystick more comfortable on the 3r then the 1025r, the 3r runs and operates way smoother

    Hi Tom,
I have a 2022 3025E and really enjoy the extra lifting capacity. Was originally looking at the 1025r but felt it was too small and I would out grow it. The dealer did not have any 2025r’s and showed me the 3025E. The price was reasonable. Lacks some of the comfort features that the R series has but it is a work horse. I don’t mind the loader joystick location. At first I felt it would be uncomfortable, but after using it for over a year it is not a problem at all. Arm never gets tired or sore when using my loader a lot. The extra lift height and capacity is great. Never disappointed with it, especially when using the Brushcrusher it can lift a lot. I have some 48” implements and don’t find the size difference an issue. If you get a new tractor whatever the size, I highly recommend a third and fourth function. Wish I got them and it opens you up to many more implement options. Best of luck!

I mow with mine too so I wanted something smaller. You can’t go wrong with the 25r in my opinion. It all depends on what you want to do with it and how fast you need it done. I feel the 25r will do everything a 32 or 38 can do just take longer. You already have the implements sized for a 25r so that’s something to consider. I highly recommend the 25r.

I have had the 1023, the 1025R, and now have the 2023 2025R, the only downside is that the tractor has the same horse power but weighs alot more so you have to idle up when negotiating hills. Lift power is a little more and the loader also comes with the single point connection. And you can turn up the hydraulics for a little more lift as I found mine didn't come in at to spec

Should have my new 2025r this week. Trading my 1025r in. The deal was good, getting a close out 2023 model. Main reason was to get the backhoe. Also came with a free 60” mower deck. Hopefully will be better with the bigger tires and additional couple hundred pounds of weight. Too good of a deal to pass up.

The two series are actually two frame sizes, the "small 2" 2025r, which will run your attachments well including the backhoe. Then there's the "big 2" or "large frame 2" which are the 2032r/2038r, the 38 has a turbo. About the same size as a 3 series, designed for 5' attachments to cover the tire tracks. Different backhoe.

I was going to buy a 2032 had my mind made up walked into the John Deere dealership with my wife and she said one thing - are you sure that is going to fit anywhere you will need it ? And I thought nope - ended up buying the 1025r and have not regretted it at all - it’s compact ite nimble and I can thread it thru small places as we use it to do property maintenance on our rental properties - it’s big enough to get the job done and it’s small enough that I can transport it easy

I'm like yourself- been looking at getting a tractor for at least the past 10 years. Bounced around from 1 series, to 4 series; 2 series to 3 series. In a perfect world, I'd be in a 3033R cabbed unit, but over the past 6 months I've started to solidify myself on a cabbed 2025R.
But why not the 1025R? Personally speaking, I have a riding lawn tractor, and the 1025R size wise is too similar to me. Also, currently my storage building has a 7' overhead door. Add in that in the next 5 to 10 years I see myself moving off of my half acre and getting into a bigger property, so a tractor would be needed then, and currently, I'd be using it for general property chores as well as an intensive yard renovation that is going to take years and many loads of mulch, ground and topsoil. Tractor just seems the logical choice, though at one point, I did (and still do, from time to time) consider a small to medium sized tracked skid steer

I have a X728, which has similar horsepower to the 1025R/2025R, but less hydraulic flow/PSI and no rear PTO/3pt (though I can add one). The 2025R sits higher, but isn't that different from a 1025R. I've already decided that when I finally opt for a larger tractor, I'm going for the 2038R.

IMHO After trading in my X738 earlier this year on my new 1025r I wouldn't trade in ever again, just get another piece of equipment, ie.Tracksteer/Mini-x. Like your comment regarding the load height/capacity I'll just get a different style machine that excels with higher lift capacity when it becomes an issue. Everything else on my 1025r is sufficient so far. I have the loader, Backhoe, 5'rake, boxscraper, Rototiller, loader mounted snowblade, forks and grapple.

A 3039R is only 1 inch longer and 1 inch wider than a 2038R. Take a measuring tape and see. The loader is so much stronger, the transmission has 3 ranges, Factory cab with AC is an option. I can't see the appeal of a big 2R compared to a 3R.

I have a 2018 1025r with AG tires that I bought new with the 120 loader, 54" mower deck, and 54" snow thrower. Love the loader and the snow thrower but I do not use the mower deck as I have too many obstacles in my yard and the 1025 rips up the yard when I mow with it. For mowing I have a x590 with a 54" deck that works very well. As the the 1025r, I absolutely love it however there are many times when I would appreciate more lifting capacity with the loader. If I were to upgrade to a bigger size, I think I would bypass the 2025 and instead go for a 3038. To me the only downside of the 3038 (besides the cost) is the fact that you have to use DEF.

    • @gw9951
      @gw9951 10 місяців тому

The 3038 does not use DEF, it has a DPF filter that periodically reigns which is no big deal.

I have a 1025R and recognize it has some limitations; but I’m also using it on a 2 acre
suburban homesite…nowhere comparable to your uses. But I question whether you would really get the use out of a larger rig, particularly since it seems you have completed most of what you needed the tractor for in connection with the cabin demolition and new home activities. And you have all the attachments that you seem to use effectively. While I am a big believer in justifying the acquisition of bigger and better toys based on POO (“Pride of Ownership”!), I’m not sure I could justify it in this case… but that’s just me.
Perhaps more importantly, can you share your apple pie recipe???? It looked delicious!!!

I have a 1023e and personally plan on keeping it when I upgrade to something bigger. I don't feel the need to get the larger versions of all of my implements, for example my 4' tiller is big enough for my use. A smaller tractor is also easier on the lawn, more maneuverable, and cheaper to run. Also with how well these tractors hold their value, paired with the savings in operational costs and keeping hours off a larger more expensive tractor when the job allows, it may not cost much more long term. Another machine could also help you avoid trailering between the properties. In my opinion a 2025 is not a worthwhile upgrade from a 1025. Just not worth changing machines for essentially larger tires. I've used a 2032r with a MSL loader and its a lot more tractor than the 1 series.

Kind of wish I would have gotten the 2025r but I needed the tight turning radius of the 1025. Still wish my backhoe had more power. Sometimes it can't lift a full bucket of wet dirt. Not sure if that is normal or not. 192 hours on my 2021. Almost time for the 200 hour service. Thinking on turning up the pressure but not sure if that's a good idea or not. Loader seems to be ok for what I'm doing. Dirt and gravel. Have a grapple use that a lot. No problems with lifting on the front, just the backhoe seems real weak.

    • @projectswithjw
      @projectswithjw 9 місяців тому

It's normal. The backhoe boom can barely pick up 200 lbs at full reach. Turning up the pressure does help. Mine came from factory at 1900 psi. Its so much better at 2400 now.

When I bought my '18 1025 I did a cost compare to 2025 and 30. The 1025 was the winner. Would I like a 30, maybe for driveway rock, but since the 10 has done everything I need and has the belly mower, I made the right choice. Yes, maybe I have to make 2 or 3 trips more on my 1/4 mile driveway with rock but the extra money for a bigger tractor for the 5% more usage of that tractor is not economy wise. Unless you need a bigger tractor 50% of the time, the cost to value goes to the 1025b every time. my 2p.

Got my 2038R about a year and a half ago. I got it with the 270B backhoe, and am thrilled with both. My property has some steep slopes on it, and I was told (and believe) that the 2038R would be more stable than the 1025, which is a good bit narrower. Now, those with tight gates might prefer smaller, but I don't have that problem. I added 3" wheel spacers and beet juice in the tires, and I am careful, but I have never had that "tippy feeling" that all 1025 owners seem to have from time to time. Doesn't mean that it won't happen, but so far, so good.
The 270B has been great for removing stumps and general digging. I've never worked the 260, so I don't know how they compare. This winter, I'm going to plow using the 72" artillian job. I am certain that I will have plenty of power to push snow around. The front end loader will lift virtually anything I can get into it.
I didn't get the MMM, due to all the problems that people have had with those. That's a clear miss on John Deere's part. It hurt their reputation, and cost them many sales.
