After reading the shining, I understood why King HATED the movie. The Shining feels so personal to his struggles with addiction and I can see that theme in the book. I feel like Kubrick strips away those layers to Jack and just makes him an evil monster for no reason instead of someone possessed by addiction. Also RIP Shelley Duvall you are an icon 🩷🩷🩷

    • @impertud
      @impertud 4 місяці тому +13

YES! I agree with this so much. I loved The Shining because Jack's descent into that madness was so well done and you could follow and feel his struggle. I understand translating it into movie form can be hard, but when I first watched it and Jack had that evil/unsettling vibe from the beginning, I really didn't like it because that's now how he came across in the book to me. The movie can be enjoyed if you take it as is, but I'll always stand by that as an adaptation it is NOT a good one.

@@billiep1603 i read a quote in a review which was something along the lines of “the book is written by a man who has struggled with alcohol and can feel the evil corrupting him and the movie is directed by a man who grew up with an alcoholic for a farther and can feel the evil in the air” and honestly that changed my prospective on both the book and film

When you read King's 'On Writing', it is really crazy to think that Carrie was his first book published. The fact that he was a school teacher at the time too. It is so impressive how his first book is a horror classic. It almost makes me sad that we don't get the opportunity to be surprised by the story now since it's part of pop culture.

I really loved ‘Salem’s Lot because I loooove how King can write characters so well! This man wrote characters for a whole TOWN of people and each one felt unique! They seemed like real people instead of copy and paste of each other. I also felt like this book was a metaphor for how ‘big business’ comes in to destroy small towns. We have this wealthy man come in and inhabit the most iconic place of this hometown. Then he basically takes over, killing off the original residences of the town and sucks them dry of their resources. This is reminiscent of how a big business will come in and drive out the people who lived there first to make way for their own gains, and in return sucks the land and people dry.

I loved hearing your empathy towards Carrie. It’s definitely a big theme that makes the story special to me too. I was bullied a lot in high school and a story like Carrie honestly gave me a lot of revenge fantasies when I was a kid. But now I look at the story with so much empathy and sadness for Carrie. The way you describe it really shows the different levels that story has.
Also the made for TV version with Angela Bettis is one of my favorite adaptations. Her acting makes it my favorite version… and there’s an unexpected, semi-positive twist ending.

Rage gives me the feeling of putting a spotlight on teenage cruelty. Teenagers are cruel, and that cruelty is fueled by a desire for power. Charlie is the one in power, so naturally the other kids tey to please him and tell him what they want to hear. Then Ted becomes the scapegoat, the black sheep. Teenagers dont bully to please adults, they do it to get social points from one another.

I ended most of my bullying early on when I just Punched a bully in the gut as I was walking by with an upper cut style punch... and those that still did pick on me I ignored or joked along with at my own expense.
So yes I was bullied badly in kindergarten and 1st grade but the bullys learning that they'd be attacked back or at least get a reaction they did not find fun made them focus on others quickly. Plus I think I hung out with the popular crowd in elementary without realizing how popular they were.
Point is the way Carrie and many others handle it; is the wrong approach and can lead to mental snaps.
Bullys are trying to control you for entertainment or to prop themselves so if your boring or don't let them feel superior then why would they pick on you? That was my philosopher and it worked for me.

I really dislike Kubrick's adaptation of 'The Shining' because it turns Jack into the villain although he's just mentally so unstable that he becomes an easy victim for the overlook which is the actual villain. Also, what I feel with a lot of King movie adaptations is that they cannot convey the characters in the same sense the books do. What I love about King are his well flushed out characters and really round characters; as you said also they feel very very real and every time I've watched a movie adaptation of his books they do not live up to that. And that's something that especially happened in the shining. Kubrick rid Jack of all his traits and though it is amazing visually, the sense of the story and its characters is somehow lost entirely.
Anyway, loved the video, I am very excited for the next ones! :) Also, this made me want to reread 'Salem's Lot' so badly

I didn't love The Shining either. That was the last book I read of Stephen King then I felt like I had enough. But hearing your perspective on Carrie makes me want to reread it and I am so excited for this series. You actually inspired me to read the rest of his books as well.

About The Shining: I do think the hedges turning their heads is scary as hell. It's like when you see a room full of manequins in a horror movie, you know something scary is gonna happen, but you never suspect the hedges would have the same mechanic

I'm SO EXCITED for this series, and so impatient for you to get to all the books. I'm like 75% of the way through his catalogue and it's taken me 15 years 😂😭
Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.

Excited for you to get to Doctor Sleep (sequel to The Shining)! Honestly preferred it to The Shining, BUT the movie for Doctor Sleep was even better! Mike Flannigan, the director, poured so much love and respect in the movie to tie in The Shining movie and book together. The Shining movie by Kubrick was said to have been hated by Stephen King cause of how Jack was portrayed in the movie and how things ended.

Carrie is probably my favourite Stephen King book, partially of how short it is, but also because it feels so real to me. I'm from a somewhat similar background as the character Carrie, and was badly bullied. To me, it is for sure on of those inevitable tragedies, a build up to an explosion that could have prevented, but where so many around Carrie just made the worst choices that pushed her into tragedy. It was cathartic to read, in a way - being bullied throughout child- and teenhood can have life long consequences, the c-ptsd. the social struggles, the depression, or worse... In a literary context, it feels very cathartic to see the life long (/life ending) consequences affect the bullies as well as the bullied. Carrie is one of the few books I know that captures that feeling the most.
(just to be crystal clear, literary catharsis in no way extends to excusing or, god forbid, endorsing real life tragedies. That's the great thing about literature. It lets us experience emotions from a safe detachment from reality, and maybe work through some of our baggage so that we can show up as our best selves in the real word)

Tony showed Danny where to find the lost trunk, he showed Danny being chased by someone through the hotel. But then the hotel itself is blocking Tony from giving Danny messages.
