    I hope you have been enjoying our series on shade. Today is design #2 & 3. I will take you through the designs step by step. One is the front of a house and one is in the back of a house. The design software I used is called PRO Landscape. It is a professional software program that I used when I was a landscaper. I am on the hunt for a good homeowner app or software for all of you, so hopefully I can find one for you. I hope you are inspired by today's design! If you have not seen the first 5 videos on shade perennials combos, shade conifers, shade flowering shrubs and shade perennials, and shade design #1, please feel free to check them out!

    Michelle, you are so fun and full of energy! Love your designs and frank discussion about what works and what doesn't. Shade garden ideas are great. So few channels discuss the challenges and opportunities with shade gardening. Would like to see shows devoted to specific exposures (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western) since each has unique challenges depending on wind, sun, & space.

    I live on the edge of a woods. The deer came up on my small front porch. They ate all the plants out of my planters that I made, and they ate the plants out of the railing planters. I put a bamboo pole thru the railings to block the stairs. They squeezed under the pole, came up three stairs and finished it off. Ugh !!! Then on a berm I did at the edge of the lawn, they pulled out and threw the deer resistant plants all over the place. They did sample the plants first, then pulled them out and threw them everywhere. This year I am doing wooden stakes with fishing line.

    Another great video! These design videos are super helpful. Although there are a bazillion gardening videos on UA-cam what I think makes yours stand out is the detail around how you select plants and then seeing how the design will look at maturity. Keep them coming!!! A potential topic for the future 27:06 is landscape lighting. Also how you approach irrigation. Love your channel 💜

    I watched your video of your 30 ft section in front of your woods. I would suggest a wandering path cutting through it with a destination of a curved concrete bench somewhere back in the woods. The path could re-emerge farther down your property line. It's going to be so pretty!

    Would love ideas for shade with a high water table. No standing water but about 2 feet down I hit some wet soil and sometimes get water when I’ve dug a hole. I lost a hedge of lilacs here after 18 years. I think from lilac bores. Need hedge to block neighbors a minimum of 7ft tall. I am a gardener so don’t mind some maintenance. Area gets some late morning sun. Area gets shaded 2 large silver maples. I have lost many huechera in this area. Maybe to damp. My astilbe do not do well either did my clethera. My seven sons tree & Annabelle hydrangea do great. Bed is about 12 ft wide by 40 ft long. No deer here. The whole bed is about 100 feet long. But the back half of it has a river birch and bald cypress & a lot of hostas, which do great.

    Hi Michelle!! I love your videos!! I am in Kannapolis, North Carolina and have a 1 acre woodland garden. Most of my difficulties have come from deer pressure and most of the damage has occurred as a result of the deer rutting on my newly planted cedar trees. They have also eaten lots of plants so I have had to relocate 7 camellias, 2 rhododendrons, 2 mahonias, and several hostas to another part of the garden which is fenced in. Any tips and tricks you could give us would be helpful. Thanks, and happy gardening!

    • @gardeningTLC
      @gardeningTLC  11 місяців тому

    Will the blue spruce maintain its blue color in that much shade? Both designs are fantastic.

    • @gardeningTLC
      @gardeningTLC  11 місяців тому

      Well I am hoping it will. It is a tiny risk...I think it is more like 2 hours of sun if I pull it out far enough and a lot of dappled sun through the tree. We shall see.....and if I see it not maintaining blue, I have plenty of gardens to move it too and I can get some kind of hemlock to put there.

    Michell. The blue color of the Veronica you used in this video is gorgeous. I have two questions. 1) Which grower's Royal Candles did you buy? I can't find it on Proven Winner's website. Instead, I found Magic Show Wizard of Ahhz. However, buyer reviews say its color is violet rather than blue. 2) What sun conditions does Royal Candles require?
    I live in zone 8A and my yard is in the shade before noon and after 5:30pm. I believe this means my it has 'partial sun'. Is it true that for flowering plants that 'do best in full sun but can tolerate some shade', I may not get the best flower colors?

    I really dislike the shrubs I inherited from the previous home owner as they are all hugely overgrown boxwood and laurel, forming a 6' tall hedge. I hired someone to trim them but the hedge is still 4' tall after the trimming. It will be very costly to remove and replace them all. Besides, my husband wants to keep them, saying they are sturdy. Indeed, they were unscathed by the 2021 severe winter while many of my neighbors lost all their shrubs. I am hoping to tear up some grass and extend the shrub bed out by 3' and plant some small shade-loving perennials in front of the existing shrubs. I wonder if it will work.
