    I remember around 1986 a Mike Romanof? ( used to live in Northcliff and owned a maroon boat tail 1920’s /30’s Bentley. I was most fortunate to actually go for a drive in it, and was so impressed by the performance of that vintage car.

    Really interesting seeing how you do this having just done all this sort of thing, including making the ash frame for my Riley. Interesting to see how the frames compare, the Riley Brooklands has more steel brackets reinforcing things it seems. Hammering the ali around the ash was no issue on mine except when I didn't support the wood from behind enough and cracked the timber when hammering too hard! I did anneal just around where the fold was. I used pins every 1-1/2" or 2" which seems to be how the Riley factory did it. Getting the shape right is hard and I think I messed up a little. As you say the timber frame means you don't have all the information. I still need to do my door skins and I think that might show where the mismatch is but it's near the rear wheels, hidden behind the suspension and guards so I should get away with it (I hope).

      Sounds like an awesome project. We love Riley Brooklands! What grade Aluminium did you use? Best of luck with the rest of your project 👍

      @@BroughBuilt We use 5005 H32 since that's seems to be all we can get here in New Zealand. At least easily by us amateurs. I don't think it's ideal but it works. When I started I did my best to learn how to gas weld it with oxy acetylene but it's so difficult and hard to find good flux and so on. Even with the right flux it's messy and hard to clean up afterwards. I switched to TIG which after struggling with gas was suddenly easy and I found it much easier. I still need to weld from both sides though to ensure proper penetration. We'll see how well it holds up once the car is on the road but I expect it will crack at some point. These ash framed cars are really flexible from what I have seen! Super stiff springs and really flexible chassis and body. The Brooklands has very limited suspension travel, especially at the front since the chassis is so low and the springs are flat. How is the floor done in the Bentley? The Brooklands has a continuous flat undertray from the engine back. I used 2mm aluminium for that.

    The frame is stunning , be a shame to hide it all ,,, no matter how sweet the alloy will be.

      You’d love the Labourdette “skiffs” then; ash frames with mahogany strip skins… light weight pre war (1913-15 iirc) alpine racers.
      No, they weren’t nearly as streamlined as these, but the wood is amazing.

    Wat is die graad en dikte van Aluminium wat julle gebruik Danie?

      @BroughBuilt  13 днів тому

      Hi Willem. Hierdie keer gebruik ons 1040 x 1.6mm om maklikker te vorm om die hout raam

    Ek is besig met n Cobra hier in Ozzieland. Ek gebruik E36 front suspension en E39 rear suspension. Ek het die chassis self gedesignde en gebou. Maar Ek is nie klaar met die bou nie. Ek wil die hele ou spulletjie verkoop en Rusland toe verhuis. Sal daar weer karre begin bou. Groete.🇿🇦🇦🇺🇬🇪🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺

    • @BroughBuilt
      @BroughBuilt  14 днів тому

      Interesant. Is dit nie vrek koud in Rusland nie? Ek is nuuskierig, was dit (is dit) baie moeilik om 'n tuis gemaakte chassis te registreer in Aus?

    • @mikeleonard8031
      @mikeleonard8031 14 днів тому

      @ Ek het dit nog nie gerigestreer nie maar die OEM parte is n groot plus punt want dit is waar die ongelukke vandaan kom.Meeste ouens kan nie weld nie. Die chassis is van 100x50x5 “rectangular staal gemaak en Ek kan weld!A bit of an overkill met die staal maar Sal beslis nie “twist”nie.🇿🇦🇦🇺🇬🇪🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺

      Sekere gedeeltes in Rusland is koud maar teen die Swart see is die temperatuur soos in die Vrystaat of Transvaal. Twee derdes van Rusland is basies onbewoond. Dit is die grootste land in die wereld en Ek hoor daar is tienduizend Suid Afrikaanse boere in Rusland. Lieflike land met Lieflike mense. Die Swart plaag is nog nie daar nie.🇿🇦🇦🇺🇬🇪🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺
