That's why I like Vanilla WoW so much. There's grand, overarching stories and questlines, but there's also hundreds of little stories to immerse yourself in, you can be that grand hero, boldly going forth to expose the dragon conspiracy in Stormwind, or you can just as easily be a courier for hire transporting ingots and horseshoes between two towns. It's a world with a lot going on at every level and you can choose where you stand in that.
Bro...I was literally just talking with my therapist about how I felt that the "chosen one" stories that we grew up consuming have really had an impact on my sense of self-worth and what it means to live a "successful" life. As I enter my 30's I feel like I'm finally starting to be able to distance myself from that desire to be the best or most famous at what I do. All of us happen upon this tiny, inconsequential sliver of consciousness in the grand scheme of life, and I think that being able to accept your circumstances and understand what "role" you should be playing is paramount to living a life of true joy and happiness. Of course I'm still trying to figure out if I'm the fisherman, the cook, or the blacksmith, but at least right now I can say I'm truly content being at the place I am in my life. Anyways, I continue to enjoy your videos and the clarity and relatability you bring to these topics. Hope to catch you on stream again soon man, take care!
Absolutely agree with this idea. I’ve felt so so long like I just wanted to be part of the story, not THE story. Really appreciate your videos! You’ve got a very interesting and engaging perspective on the game (and life).
I agree wholeheartedly, that's one of the things that attracted me to classic so much. I like being the character in the background who starts in a field trying to kill wolves or boars, not some praised demi god that the story revolves around.... even though I enjoy retail, it feels horribly forced
I always enjoyed smaller adventure paths in TTRPGs, be a support character in a groups of aspiring heroes and make it my goal to help them achieve theirs. I don't want to be the one slaying the dragon, I want to be the guy that tells their story afterwards. In games where you're thrust into the chosen one role, I usually enjoy helping people over robbing them blind, though it's just for RP. Helping the fishermen and blacksmiths of the story meant to save an entire community, even if games not always represent it. And I find it often applies to rl as well. Doing as little as brightening someone's mood might inspire them to do more/better than they were otherwise ready for. Every little bit of hard work and kindness ends up somewhere, and you soon find yourself responsible for improving a lot of lives. Regardless of how insignifiant you think you are.
This video reminds me of the thoughts I had during COVID. People tend to look down on all the cashiers, garbage men, etc. but when the pandemic hit those people were the ones who kept our country alive and well. I work a fancy tech job and sometimes when I tell people what I do they're very impressed but if I stopped doing my job no one outside my company would notice, but if all the grocery store workers stopped working things would get hectic real quick. There's an opening in Naruto Shippuden that I really appreciate where it highlights the ramen cook who feeds Naruto. Without him and people like him Naruto or anyone else in the story wouldn't have been able to fight.
This is really good video, rather philosophical, as a creative who has had the privilege of working with some of my favourite artists and brands , long after fulfilment left, I was stuck feeling like I have to be the top designer, keep up appearances when I possibly could have found something with alot less pressure and more fullfiling even teaching the arts...at least that's how I feel now the accomplishments feel empty , the supporting role feels way better
This is why I adore EVE online. It is literally an entire world that I can live and in explore and have fun in. But I do not have to be the main character, I can watch the faction warfare and nullsec alliances blast each other, and if I want I can even get involved, but the game world moves on without me. It is always there for me to go back to, and just being a guy that makes and sells ammo is a role that NEEDS to be filled. Every ship from the smallest frigate to the largest capital ship retains value in the economy and always has a place. You don't have to be the titan pilot, you can run a cov-ops frigate and scout while cloaked to make sure your capital ships dont get caught before the fight.
Hey man. You are a good, clean speaker and have very interesting insights. I'm currently playing Monster Hunter Rise and the blacksmith is just as important as my main character for accomplishing hunts. Anyways, subscribed!
I like your videos very much, they are really peaceful to me. Having no need and pressure to be something exceptional its easier to do my tasks and have fun while doing them.
Nice vid bro, Good analogy : dont get distracted or influenced by the noise, do what you do best and love it even if you are not the main character. cya on your stream. Barthuc
Definitely struggling with this perfectionist/be exceptional mindset that mainly consist of doing nothing cause idk what I can do to be this type of people. Been playing a wow like mmo for 13 years now too so idk how much of an overlap there is between the mmo player community and this type of all or nothing/ perfectionist mindset. I feel like so much of the real world has been discovered already and that there's just so much competition in every field that it's almost impossible to get to the top in anything nowadays, guess that's a big part of why I play an mmo, feels more achievable to become "someone" in a world like that, that's basically a smaller scale version of real life with less people and more achievable goals/more ways to become known for something... Seems like working at a single (main) game like an mmo for years fit well with this wanna be an expert at something mentality
I agree. The role play aspect of wow is shadowed by the progression system that values combat above all else. I like to think that players would feel less pressured to go out being the hero if there were stuff to engage with elsewhere. Professions would be as amazing as raiding if the crafts were performed with animations, the skill system interacting with game elements just like the world quests of mixing stuff in a cauldron. Imagine if there were mastery involved, like knowing the sequence of ingredients for different outcomes :v
totaly agree , but unlike the hero who put the sword to strike the dragon , being anyone else its very hard to see the impact of your work , there is no big celebration for u when u cook a fish , and over time u migth tend to forget how ur roll play in the world , "am i even needed in my company " "is anything am l doing matters as much as someone else doing all these big thigns and imapct the world " . being a "side character" have a mental effect that need to be addressed often . and acknowledging what you mentioned in the video really get u back in track , remind us side characters are important , heros in our own little story kinda.
I think that is were a strong sense of community comes in. If you are just doing some task in a vacuum it can feel very meaningless. But if you know the people it is affecting, in this analogy, knowing the hero's family, you can see how your actions have directly impacted your community. Through your collective efforts a dragon is vanquished. When every thing happening is just a faceless corporation and there is no sense of community, we loose sight of how a dragon could ever be slain, let alone the if our efforts matter at all. If the corporation can just hire ANYONE to do this job because they don't really care how well it gets done, that is going to be super hard to enjoy.
To add to this point- I don't prefer the whole 'Champion of Azeroth' / most-important-hero-character-in-WoW rhetoric that Blizz has turned towards in recent years. Back in Warcraft, Classic/BC/LK WoW etc we were just soldiers aiding the mighty champions of the land, witnessing their heroic deeds and feeling a part of the action but not BEING the all powerful one/s that Azeroth HAS to turn to at every point in current retail. Like being present for the killing of the Lich King but ultimately seeing Tirion Fordring break free and save his troops at the last moment from the deadly clutches of the former Prince Arthas. Moments like those created great storytelling and fleshed out characters. I still love WoW but I feel like having the playerbase as THE heroes prevents the fantastic storytelling and building/fleshing out of new characters from a lore perspective.
I enjoy your comparisons you make and using games and such. Maybe I'm off base but while listening. I just came away with we are all important and we don't need to be in the spotlight and famous. Some may like to be, but it shouldn't be a defining factor of our success. I may not be making 100k/year. So I can compare myself that although, that is true, I have a job that is better than most people. Example being working in retail. But those people working in retail are just as important. And maybe they feel more validated because they aren't a janitor. But then again the janitor is just as important and relevant. We all would like to be better so we compare ourselves to others. It's hard not to.
yes. being the CEO of McDonalds is great, but when you go through the drive through someone needs to hand you the bag. Even though those people are not compensated equally they both have an important role to play in the business. Its my thought that people don't have more inherit "value" than others. We should be proud of what we do and what we love without judgement or comparison.
What is your audio setup? Like, if possible, could you tell me all the things (hardware, microphone, plugins, anything else?) Really love the sound, not too harsh, crisp, clean 🧼
Mic: Rode Procaster Cardioid Dynamic Broadcast Microphone Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Software: OBS and Premiere Pro I honestly don't do any post-processing or use any pluggins. Just make sure audio levels are good when recording and thats about it.
I really hate the fact we are toe to toe with the main wow protagonists, it was great when we were just another person, we many did the raids and it is bad story telling in wow, that we are brougth up with no reason, we at least work up to it, become and maintain being a general or even a champion. They make normal rpg story telling into an mmorpg, which sucks. Ps. I think any level of main charater syndrome comes as a stress relief and coping mechanism for any stress they cannot cope with.
Before even watching - I don't want to be the main character in WoW and I know a lot of other people don't either, part of why classic is such a pull. Personally I don't want to be a main character irl either, it means even more pressure than I already have in life 🤣🤣 but yeah main character is basically a narcissistic move, right? Though I do want to slay my personal dragons and make the best life I can. That's another story. Grats on the new subs (like mine) Acadiian!
This is exactly why I quit FFXIV halfway through Endwalker, that game is the most egregious form of Main Character Syndrome. You literally fly to the end of the universe to kill god, lol
I'm not the Orc Warrior you send into battle. I'm the Orc Peon you send into the woods to harvest lumber.
Zug zug
I love RPing an Orc Peon. Whenever I get 1 gold I give it away to the nearest horde player.

Cata and retail added lots of minor storylines into most of the zones which are honestly sometimes better than the expansion's "main story"
I love your channel man, so relatable. Getting checked for ADHD in April! Keep up the content, it's really refreshing

This was very insightful. Each and every person that makes an effort is a part of humanity.

This is a topic that is more in touch when talking about Christ. You’re on the right path it seems!

Work complete!
MCS is actually just having Narcissistic characteristics which is "NOT GOOD, brother."
Preach that's why where I am in the shadows 😂

WoW lost 'it' when you became the Hero of Azeroth, and the organic Guild structure died.

Wait... misogyny?! What does that have to do with main character syndrome? ^^'
Agree with everything else but that comes out of left field.
Well, I guess I’m gonna be first
you did it! gratz
