I am really blown away by such talent while having such humility. You make it fun when you talk about your mistakes as a pro. You can laugh at errors and I would like for you to elaborate on mistakes and successes with great detail. An artist learns greatly from creative mistakes. I really would enjoy as a life goal to become an artist like you. Your wonderful! Thanks you. Jim.
This is beautiful. I'm someone who has talent for imagery, but lacking all the techniques. I've spent years fumbling with my own idea of how to apply the medium to the paper, never having had the education of different skills and techniques. Now that you have taught me this technique, I will put it to practice and see how I get on! Thank you so much for being so generous in sharing your skills with me. new sub :)
I think this is a very helpful drawing tutorial, Grace. As an animal artist myself, it's very interesting to see the differences we like to draw. I especially find interesting you draw the fur with the triangle technique, as i don't do that at all. I must say your technique is incredible as your work is so detailed and beautiful!
Grace thank you for this video, it helped me out immensely, I do hair with an airbrush and it took me almost two years to perfect the dagger stroke which is used in airbrushing to do fur. It takes awhile to do fur with an airbrush and too many factors can screw up your piece, air pressure or the paint decides to start drying in the pot. Doing fur in graphite is so much more soothing than with the airbrush. Thanks again!
You're very welcome, I'm so glad it was helpful! I commend your patience creating fur with the airbrush. I absolutely love my airbrush but all the troubleshooting issues have me going insane 😂 some days it's like it's just in a mood and doesn't want to work properly at all! It is such a good tool though 🙏
@gracemurrayart I understand that, and most of my airbrushes are microns and H&S for hyper realism which the price of the gun and buying parts can hurt.
I can't thank you enough for the simple yet life changing tip of using triangle strokes I would always just angle individual strokes then blend and it was very straw like
I’m just getting started as a self taught artist, il need new pencils. I really am excited to start trying to create some wonderful animals in the future. Wonderful tutorials Thank you for the close up pictures, so helpful.
I've watched a number of videos in the past few days but yours was by far best regarding your individual process. I practice calligraphy and I immediately resonated with your concept of strokes. You have a great mind, are clearly aware of the importantance of 'draw what you see not what you think you see'. Thank you for your guidance and good luck with your channel and endeavours
Hi Grace, I am a VERY early beginner in graphite. I want so bad to learn to draw pets and people. I thought I would start with my husbands GSP. I have searched and searched for a drawing tutorial on a GSP. I finally stumbled on your channel while watching another artist. When I saw the picture of this dog I almost screamed in delight 😊. The fur on a GSP is so different than other dogs because the hair is so short and all the spots. I have practiced the fur in so many different ways but it just didn’t look right. You explained the stroke so well and how to get the white in as well as their dark spots. I can’t wait to try it. I would love it if you could do another one that shows more of the body. I want to do a drawing for my daughter who now has my Piper Jo. I moved after my husband passed and didn’t have anywhere for her to burn off all of her energy. She is a BEAUTIFUL dog. I want so bad to do her justice. I hope to see many more of your tutorials in the future. Your work is AMAZING!!!! This dog is just as beautiful 😍
Brilliant Grace. I'm just starting my process of learning how to draw realistic hair and fur. Your videos have really shown me some great ways to improve. Thank you so much for sharing. Really looking forward to the eyes and nose videos.
This is fantastic Grace. So much detail about the techniques and even better about the tools you use. This is often not emphasised in other tutorials but really makes a difference to improving my drawing. Thank you so much for posting. I’ll definitely be looking at others you’ve produced.
Love your fur technique. Just picking up my graphite after a few years and your work is inspiring. Always found fur challenging, but your triangle strokes and wiper blade strokes look so good, I will have to try them and maybe fur won't intimidate me anymore. Thanks!
Amazing artwork!!! The texture and details are fantastic. I wish I had that kind of skill - I've been doing art in all forms for a long time, and I cant even come close to a drawing like that! Bravo!
Incredible work! I'm blown away. You have nailed your techniques also and thank you so much for sharing these! Looking forward to watching your other videos now too ☺️
As usual, you make it look so easy. I’m new to this depth of detail and I need to put in the work to make sense of what appears to just flow from your pencils. Thank you.

Isn't there a easyer way to load your mechanical pencil? Remove the top and put down the graphite? or is it it can be used with different size graphite?
FYI-The jelly pens are not archival, you could end up with yellowed highlights all over your drawings in a year or so. You don’t want that to happen if it was a commission piece.
The stroke you are trying to describe is a tapered stroke. This is very useful so you don’t see a harsh beginning or end of the fur. Really lovely techniques best regards. Mike.
Thank you, I have watched these videos a couple of times now, I do appreciate the step by step, and knowing which pencil/ tool is being used. Love all the info. and you have a pretty relaxing voice. Look forward to future videos
Absolutely amazing! Fur has been my biggest struggle and this has helped me tremendously, thank you! Do you have any tutorials or advice on how to do a dog’s gums?
Thank you so much Tim! I'm so glad it helps. For dog's gums, I'd say keep them dark (they usually tend to be almost black), with nice contrasting reflections to make the mouth look wet & healthy! I'm aware my response is late, I hope you're getting on well with it :)
Stonehenge paper is excellent. Try Arches hot pressed watercolor paper and Arches printing paper. Very good papers for what you're doing. There is a vellum that can be used for this type of technique, as well.
I tried Arches once and liked it, but then found out they use gelatine based glue and I stay away from animal products so I didn't buy any more, I'll definitely give stonehenge a try though thank you!
@@gracemurrayart Hi! I definitely did not expect you to reply. I'm so used of commenting and never getting a reply, so I just assume everyone is too busy, lol. But, you did....twice! Thanks! I am no longer a watercolorist, pastelist and pencil artist. I am actually a silk painter, but I have some experience in the former areas. For example when I painted people and pet portraits I sometimes would use watercolor paper and wet the paper then put down my underpainting. When it's wet you can move it around and once dry it won't move at all. The water to pigment ratio takes some trial and error (at least for me it did) to find the "perfect" mix(?). Hi Grace great video, The paper that I use is St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford 300gram Hot Press, I have also just started using Arches Aquerelle 356gram. I emboss texture and both of these are very tough. The one to avoid is Fabriano Artistico as when the company was taken over a few years ago they changed the manufacturing process and it now has a horrible surface to it that really stands out with graphite. For shading I find a blending stump is really good but they do vary from one make to another, the ones that work best have a velvety feel to the end and they blend graphite smoothly. Hope this is helpful.
Hey Jamie, I've only just seen this comment which is really strange as I'm about to order my first roll of Aquarelle! Really looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for the heads up on fabriano, too.
@@gracemurrayart Hi Grace, I don't know if this is also of help but I found the best way to flatten paper off of a roll, is to put a piece of paper on top of the piece you've cut off and iron it flat. These watercolour papers are notoriously difficult to flatten out. The other way you can do it is to tape it down and wet it as when it dries it will stretch and flatten out. If you are going to be buying a lot of paper then you may want to contact R K Burt in London as they are the wholesaler for art papers in the UK. I've used them for many years and they have been excellent. Hope this helps, Jamie
Love the tutorial, thanks heaps for the video. Would this technique work for longer fur as well? Also what is the thing under your hand to prevent the smudging? I currently use a piece of paper but like the look of what you are using since it’s see through.
