Hey so just a pro tip from a former art teacher…for using oil pastels-if you use baby oil on a q-tip or something like that they blend better and you don’t get as messy and you don’t have to touch the paper…and use a tooth pick to help scrap some cool effects…for all the cool artists out there!❤
@@aimsanimations2905 you will get different effects based on the different blending techniques. So short answer is yes, you can just use a qtip. Have fun and experiment with different techniques 👍
@@aimsanimations2905 the baby oil helps smooth and blend. I would try both and see which you like better. With the baby oil you can push the colors further and it will be more smooth
It's nice to see artists speaking about the discomfort of sensitivity issues with certain textures and products. I related so hard to the comment about rubbing paper, the cakiness of oil pastels sticking to your fingers, and not liking how it feels to touch certain things. Acknowledging that out loud is so beneficial to your watchers who may struggle with the the same thing but are embarrassed to admit it to others. Its hard for some people to understand what that sensation feels like and it can be a massive hindrance to wanting to try new mediums
the sound and feeling of charcoal bugs me badddd. i went to art school for a bit and i almost died in drawing having to hear the sound of charcoal over and over. i wore gloves in painting too. as an artist, i never realized until i was older how many sensory issues i had with mediums and how i avoid certain art forms because of that!
I was forced to use chalk pastel and charcoal in college art classes and I would take oil pastel any day over those. That feeling when the dry media goes across the paper and makes that awful squeak really made me contemplate changing majors 💀 I much prefer ink wash and watercolor
100% agree. I use all kinds of mediums and chalk pastels are way lower on my list than oil pastels and watercolor. I still need to experiment with oil pastel over wc...
I'd forgotten the squeak of charcoal at art school! I hated rubbing my face as I thought about what I was doing, and looking like I'd been rescued from a collapsed mine by the end of the lesson.
I personally love oil pastels so so much because they mimic oil painting results without the need to prep and have good ventilation [ a god send for someone who uses their bedroom as a makeshift studio]. I actually don't do the rubbing thing because it irks me, instead I build up a pretty thick coat of the pastels and afterwards I just kinda mush it around, imitating the feeling of painting, if that makes sense? It gives this very scrumptious texture jkfjkdf
@@marettahamman677 Idk I don't think I've ever used them. My mum supplied me with some misc oil pastels. Ones that are on my table currently: pentel arts oil pastels and colorino artist + some very old case from like 2012 or smt from poland:)
I feel like oil pastels are nemesis for many artists. I hate them too. My art teacher also made us use them. Like in primary school 80% of the drawings were done in oil pastels.
i'd just like to say that i had the same opinion on oil pastels until I got ahold of some really good brands and paper. the cheaper brands feel like glorified crayons but the nicer brands are so creamy and blend really nicely, couple that with pastel paper and oooof it's so satisfying. Schmincke and Rembrandt are really good, a bit on the pricier side but so worth it imo, and as for paper i'd recommend hahnemuhle velour paper, works so well with blending and quality
I think the frustration with using any medium comes from lack of knowledge more than anything. You have a vision in your head that just won't come out like you planned. Obviously you have grown as an artist since you were a kid, and with that knowledge about art and your ability to now control the medium, your results are much better. Enjoyed the video!
I would suggest you try other oil pastel, at least professional munguo line, or even Sennelier. They are very different in experience. I used student line munguo and it is awesome. It allows blending with other colors, 3-4 layers. You can get fine detail by strategic scratching (you can scratch 2-3 layers and see the 1st one) or by adding colored pencils. I could achieve very painterly look, like it is oil paint, without oil paint mess and price. I would probably buy another set and try plain air with oil pastel.
I have the same problem but with soft/chalk pastels and charcoal- I have since warmed up to Charcoal and sometimes prefer it over graphite. They're so messy, and the dry texture is a sensory nightmare. I actually love oil pastels but they're still very messy for my current practice so I haven't used them in a while. I never want to touch chalk pastels unless I'm using them to add more depth and color to a more tactile and three dimensional craft. The others I wouldn't mind picking the others up again!!

this makes me wanna break out my crayons again!! I've never tried oil pastels (that I remember) but they look like fun if I could get something to blend them that isn't my fingertips.....

You did an amazing job working with both! When working with oil pastels, what i would recommend would be to have a tissue next to you, so that you can clean the pastels as you're using them! 🥰💗
If you want a great midway supply that’s both a crayon and an oil pastel then the Caran Dache Neocolour crayons are the best. PLUS! They’re water soluble so you won’t get patchy blends by adding water and it would be easier to incorporate with your existing supplies.

You can use a 50/50 turpentine linseed oil mix and a brush for blending oil pastels, it makes them really work like a paint. You can also you baby oil. I think oil pastels are better for artists that aren't as detail oriented. They're great at covering a large area at once but you can't get them to a fine point.
I love the drawing! I normally use the pentelArts oil pastels but I decided to try the Expressionist ones and I HATE them. They don’t layer and are not pigmented. The Pentel ones in the white package are the best!
as an artist who loves oil pastels, i really like messy art, throwing paints on a canvas and using a bunch of different mediums on one piece, art is spiritual for me and therapeutic so i really like to rub my fingers on the canvas to blend and just getting in there lol.

I don't know if you've tried them before or not, but I'd be really curious as to your thoughts on Caran d'Ache Neocolors (and specifically Neocolor ii's?), they're wax pastels, I'm not usually a pastel person either, I'm not a fan of how messy they tend to be for one thing, but with the neocolors they act basically like a really buttery, highly pigmented crayon, they blend nicely together, and the perk of the neocolor ii's in particular is that they're also water soluble, so you can use them like a watercolor, basically :D They're really fun, in my opinion, and much more pigmented than crayola crayons lol :) Additionally, they tend to be minimally messy, in my opinion, and with the neocolor iis you can largely blend them through layering and/or you can also use a damp brush and blend them that way rather than using your hands or other materials. I'm an artist who's pretty picky about supplies getting on my skin, too, so I get where you're coming from with certain supplies not being appealing in that regard :)

Hi Sara! I'll be getting out my sketchbook now, thank you for the motivation! also, love the christmas vibes!
I really dislike that brand of oil pastels. I use the Mungyo Gallery Soft Oil Pastels, as my cheapest option. But they are REALLY GOOD. And I also have the Paul Rubens which I don't like as much as the Mungyos, and then the Neopastels, which I buy open stock, and the white from Sennelier for really bright highlights at the very end. But I don't like the Sennelier in general cause they are SO soft you fill the tooth of the paper too quickly and there's no way to layer a lot, which I love to do. Ps. I think that u should try the Mungyos cause judging oil pastels based on that particular brand you are using is not giving you the real deal. Plus with the Mungyo you can blend with the pastels. I barely use my fingers!
If you like blackbean's art (dope) you should take a look at misako flodin's channel. That lady is doing witchcraft with these things. I like both of them, and everytime I watch their videos I feel like trying oil pastels again. Everytime I do I hate it though. Lol. I'm okay with the chalky ones although I don't really use them anymore.
I always liked oil pastels as a kid but ours were weirdly wet?? But way nicer than crayons.. whenever I used them in cheap kits as a teen though they were worse than crayola crayons.. I was confused af.
alot of supplies i hated as a student i really like now. its not the schools fault but they never really taught you how to use them. i love graphite now where i used to hate them. i think if you hate something do some research and try again
I had an advanced art class in 7th grade. And the art teacher brought out wax crayons. I thought you have to be kidding. But he put up a picture he did with them. He used a soft technique with them and it was a beautiful picture. He had the rest of us pick a photo to copy. I chose the same one he did. It was an albatross. I use a less soft method. It looked like an oil painting when done. The next time I saw it. It was hanging on the hallway wall next to some other select pictures. You will be surprised what you can achieve with crayons. Though some are better than others. I don’t like oil pastels too.
Hey as tip, to clean your oil pastels, put cornmeal in bag and put a oil paste in it and shake it and BOOM clean oil pastels, that one bag can last you years, I hope u see the comment
You did such a good job! Did it hurt your hands using those short sticks? Also I will be always waiting for higher category colored pencil brands to launch a skin-tone collection, like Crayola, I will never give up hope. It's so cool.
@@loati94 for me, I get the stuff all over my hand because I end up dragging my hand against the ink rather than some people being right handed not having to go over that same spot again
@@ripley528 Yes I know that writing as left handed sucks because you end up smudging ink or pencil, I was refering to the comment about the oil pastels. If you start the paintings or drawings from the right its exactly the same as being right handed and starting form the left.

All that speech about feeling paper is so neurodivergent lol. Same feeling tbh
I personally don’t love oil pastels but I am trying to use them in my art
Omg, same, I disliked oil pastels so much until only recently when I learned how to use them correctly :))
hey!!
just today one of my cool new classmates talked to me about you and that she has seen some of my comments on your videos lol
I promised her to mention her in the next one in case she finds it. Hi Sara!
I'll be getting out my sketchbook now, thank you for the motivation!
also, love the christmas vibes!
This came out amazing. I want to give it a try but I'm heavy handed, lol
This is beautiful ♥♥♥
@algorithm this is a really good video, you should rec it to everyone
I definitely hate the feel of oil pastels on my hands. It's a sensory issue but I'm more worried about getting it everywhere
I love misako flodin!!
msako is quite young though
So correct, Misako Flodin is literally like the goddess of oil pastels, I learned so much just by watching her videos :))
I always liked oil pastels as a kid but ours were weirdly wet?? But way nicer than crayons.. whenever I used them in cheap kits as a teen though they were worse than crayola crayons.. I was confused af.
You’re tooooo good OMG
I think you did a great job!
do one with those small felt tip markers that come in art kits and they dont tell u u need to add water to use them
People wake up new lilstarnerd video just came out
alot of supplies i hated as a student i really like now. its not the schools fault but they never really taught you how to use them. i love graphite now where i used to hate them. i think if you hate something do some research and try again
Such a good point!! Now that i have patience and knowledge; a lot of things i used to dislike are a lot more bearable now!
Any medium you have to learn to use in order to make the best of them.
I disliked oil pastels too until only recently when I figured out how to use them correctly :))
Oil pastels are awesome if you pay good money for them. Why brand you have isn’t the best.
Hey as tip, to clean your oil pastels, put cornmeal in bag and put a oil paste in it and shake it and BOOM clean oil pastels, that one bag can last you years,
I hope u see the comment
You did such a good job! Did it hurt your hands using those short sticks?
Also I will be always waiting for higher category colored pencil brands to launch a skin-tone collection, like Crayola, I will never give up hope. It's so cool.
for some reason i like the crayon best
Chalk and charcoal give me the heebee jeebees. 😐
I love blackbean! He's the best and his art is so cool! Woefully under viewed channel
I can't agree more, he's the best :))
if it makes you feel better about hating oil pastels, i'm left handed so you know i ABSOUTELY despise them
Why is being left handed a problem?
@@loati94 for me, I get the stuff all over my hand because I end up dragging my hand against the ink rather than some people being right handed not having to go over that same spot again
@@ripley528 Yes I know that writing as left handed sucks because you end up smudging ink or pencil, I was refering to the comment about the oil pastels. If you start the paintings or drawings from the right its exactly the same as being right handed and starting form the left.
@@loati94 I see what you're saying. As a kid when we used them, even if I started at the right I still got it on my arm somehow
Looks good though
damnnnn
