Always will wonder what a formidable team the Arrow and TSR2 would have made, 2 aircraft killed off by political pressures and incompetent prime ministers ( incompetent is polite by the way the other work I could have used was treacherous)
Great work thanks for the series

I think the biggest hurt was that the replacement(s) for the Arrow were crap. The Voodoos, F-5’s, Starfighters, and (ugh) BOMARCS were never really up to the job.

Thanks for the story. I am 60 years old and although the plane was already destroyed records of it still where around in magizines along with plans and pictures. In high school my drafting teacher was a draftsman at Avro at the time was areo being worked on. At the time I lived in Brampton (bramalea to me still). Although not an airplane in it inspired me to build and design. I build a large number of recumbent bikes and a book I wrote ended up at calpoly being used by teacher there for his fourth year engineering students as a reference for doing basic design setup of a recumbent bike while his book got into the details of the handling section of the design. The students built recumbent bikes as a hands on project in there 4th year to gain a better way of seeing practical hands on building projects. I am glad be a part of this back in 2002. Without knowing about this great plane and the company I might not have done my project. One bike is a recumbent that when taken apart fits into a goalie sized hockey bag for travelling on trains where luggage cars are not there. It went from Glencoe to Ottawa and back in 1997 on VIA rail. I even saw person there that worked on the arrow (he is pictures in a at the museum working the ejection set on assembly line. I told the story I wrote here and got a smile. There are people that have gone on to great things knowing about this project.

Loved every episode! I always wished the arrow program was never scraped in the first place and always hope there was a jet intact still out there somewhere. These episodes really kept me wanting more and to find out how it all come together, which you have done a bang up job sir. I also have to give you props not only for this series but the dedication it takes to complete such an endeavor such as this.

well I AINT 70 ... and be dang certain I wont let the pride of Canadian Engineering fade ... currently I have 75% of the arrow modeled and am waiting on a new computer and UPS to run a long set of virtual stress test for a 6foot long flyable RC ... and have plans set ready for a larger version upwards of a 10 foot wingspan ... and yes as the testing of the smaller one progresses I will be updating the plans to bring the Generation2 and 5 hybrid of the Arrow upto a Generation 6 ... atm my only stumbling block is making an RC turbine that is long and narrow like the iroquois for the 6footer ... the math for the design of that one is only about 12 feet long PER pass ... the larger one is a little easier as size helps keep things in a better range ... and yes the bigger one will be mostly composites ... (except the engines and a few other bits) ... and once those are being worked on I will see what I can do about making one as close to the original that is manned ... and full scale ... and NO I wont be designing them with American ordnance in mind ... airsoft and or paintballs and water balloons perhaps for the RC ones ... the full size one ... perhaps as a tanker .... and airshow version
    .
Gen 2-5 hybrid you question ... since we DONT have the exact same lower quality materials of the 50's ... one has to make a compromise and redesign with the newer versions in mind ... the best part of this passion ... is it let me pass the covid lockdowns with something to keep my mind busy ... between learning aerodynamics, materials analysis ... and cad (i was trained on paper drafting) and yes even fluid dynamics ... and materials engineering ... it is a good thing I enjoy Maths ;)
    .
and of course I have a few other things in mind for the planes ... but those are staying with me ;)
    .
The Grand Lady WILL fly again ... before I pass on to the next posting ...
btw rtrd cpt 3 rcr ... scout sniper ... among other things ...

@@avroarrowcf-105channel8 well so far out of my home I am reworking the plans ... the air frame is nearly complete as far as cad ready for virtual testing .... the engines ... well the math is HUGE and I am nibbling away at it piece by piece ... I am currently speaking with a few interested people to see what can be done about getting all the BITS needed to build them ... and I know a few retired Air force people who may be able to locate Military qualified test pilots that are retired ...
      .
and yes I am just south of that small town ... about 50 minutes south of it actually ;)
      .
I HOPE to get more done in the near future but it is hard slogging and many Kilometers of Math for each change ... good thing I like Maths ;)
      .
and the joys of people who said it cant be done ... they forgot what determination and a willingness to do what it takes to get the impossible done .. time is the enemy NOT knowledge ... after all I am NOT a spring chicken at 57 ... not like I have much else to do as essentially a shut in
      .
when I served ... I brought my boys home in the same parts they left with ... maybe a few holes extra .. but whole ... and we loved the impossible ... taught us a lot about what is possible

Two Episodes in just one day! What an amazing surprise of a Birthday gift. It may be the end of an era but for me it marks the beginning of new one, an amazing start off for my early 20s. The Animation amazing as always!, the storyline from beginning to end was very interesting and enjoyable, the characters were very likable enjoyed every minute that they were on screen. The action just blew me away I've been at the edge of my seat as well as cheering on for the RCAF and the RL-206 Team throughout the whole two episodes, and man what can say about that soundtrack, that wonderful groovy panio playing is an absolute joy to the soul it just grabs me every time I hear it. Virtual You have done a phenomenal job in bringing this incredible technological achievement of Canada's Aviation History back to life and back into the heavens of where she truly belongs. Thanks for all the wonderful adventures you have given to all of us "Arrowheads" they have certainly helped fill in that hole in our hearts that the axe from the programme's cancellation had left us with in it's wake. Philip and Paul's last mission with 206 was certainly the icing on the cake for me.... pun intended of course.

AMAZING and awesome! A labor of love. These animation in two last episodes were so realistic, I almost thought I was there. (But the whole series was top-notch!)
I lost 1/2 my sight, (so bought a bigger monitor to see this!) This, and other life events, were very depressing. But your story kept me entertained, proud, and happy. And I can always go back and watch again (I hope.). The music, as usual, was awesome.

Take Care! LLAP!. And may any angels that guard you have quivers full of "Arrows".

This brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. Thank you for putting this series together. Oh what might have been. We could have been the second ones into space. No mention of it here but I remember. There were plans that would allow the Arrow to launch a rocket into orbit while flying inverted, at maximum altitude. I am positive that there would have been a world market. After all the Arrow as stated was five generations before its time. Gone, all because of a weak defence and an angry and jealous Prime Minister! 😡

I remember vaguely about the Arrow. Someone should also do a series on the "Bradour" sp. It's a Hydrofoil sitting at NAD in Dartmouth also pulled out of the water by the Americans at the same general time. Was billed as the fastest warship afloat. Not sure if it was ever commissioned in the RCN but like I said it's at NAD which is part of the Dockyard complex which is Navy property.

I have quite possibly a stupid question. Could a private person (organization/whatever) build a, flight-capable, full-sized replica of the Arrow (not weapons capable of course) legally? (not RC toy)

    • @Virtualenvirons
      @Virtualenvirons  2 роки тому

HI BlackFire. I thought I answered you last week, but apparently not. The question is not stupid at all. It is a very complex question though. A full size Arrow as it was in 1959 would likely cost at least one billion dollars for the first one. After that maybe 130 million per copy. The first one would require all the jigs and fixtures, etc. Also, the engines are a problem. It is not clear who owns the rights to them as they were not owned by the Canadian Government, but Orenda, which is now Magellan. To answer your question though....it could be done......regards....Virtual

The Arrow was only a legend when I was born (1980's) but thanks to Ron Suchiu and his painting, I discovered her. What she was or wasn't we don't know but some Canadian billionaire should build a super sonic, full size replica with modern materials and the Canadian people should get to find out. If the myth is true and one got away...WE WOULD LIKE IT BACK! no questions asked 🤣

Pretty sure the arrow would not keep uo in dog fight in anything made after the 2000 but might have a chance with thrust retiring tech abd speed but would be a great inter enter abs strategic strick bomber not fight

    • @vectorworksnurbsmodelling6049
      @vectorworksnurbsmodelling6049 2 місяці тому

Hi Sleuith. This question has two answers. The Arrow was design to fight and turn above 50,000 ft. Af that altitude an F-18 and most modern Russian fighters are ballistic or pretty much travelling in a straight line. That big wing on the Arrow was there to catch air and turn well above 50,000 ft., but in thick air it was a fish out of water except for speed.
One of the common mistakes on the Arrow was confusing its "Combat Ceiling" with 'Service Ceiling" cited at 58,000. ft. 58,000 ft, was where it could still turn and fight..
But, in lower altitudes it would pay a heavy price. Except for speed, it would be severely limited in turning.
Something else to keep In mind, the Arrow was designed with inherent instability, not seen again until the F-16 and F-18. This would give the Arrow an advantage in instantaneous turn rate at high altitude. The F-15 does not have that.
Most scenarios presented pose the question of an Arrow intercepting a modern fighter. What if a modern fighter ((F-35) had to intercept an Arrow over Canadian Airspace. Satellites coud direct the Arrow around an F-35. Assuming both and Arrow and F-18 were armed with AMRAAM's, the Arrow missile could be launched at greater distance and travel downward, where the F-18's would have to travel upwards.
The Arrow was a different bird.......regards......Virtual
