ballard understood this. peter is describing the inner and outer forces perfectly. very few understand this. look at how he is demonstrating with the split grip with the lead arm laying quietly on his chest (inner force maintaining radius) and the trail arm (piston) maintaining the arc. Peter ends it perfectly too. The butt of the grip pointing back to center of the triangle.

The force he’s referring to is gravity, something we take for granted. It is very consistent accelerating mass at 32 ft/sec/sec. If you lift a club overhead and dead drop it will accelerate to 20 mph in the one second it takes to hit the ground.
In the beginning of the downswing the hands hold the club head mass up so gravity can’t act on it. When the hands drop and the shaft reaches horizontal it can and need to be in a position where i can fall down into the ball.
Just take a iron and swing with just the back arm and try to whack weeds with it and you’ll quickly figure out what the ideal position coming down is and when the back heel much be lifted the keep the hands accelerating ahead and pulling the club head mass behind. If the back foot stays down gravity will accelerate the club head down around the hands - a flip. Watch here Pete’s hands are when his back heel lifts and how that causes the hips to release open.

    Hands are inconsistent!?
I believe that the hands are everything. My guru, Mike Austin, Mike Malaska..., many others and I’m sure Seve himself would regard the hands as the penultimate method of face control.
Did he just mean, “Don’t start the swing with the hands?”

He’s basically saying if you have faults, you’re hands are inconsistent at correcting them. Thats why some people strike great one day and terrible the next. In the full video you see him emphasise the important on an opposing grip to keep the club face stable throughout the swing and not have to be flippy or handsy. Recommend the full video.

I’ve played ping pong, tennis, racquetball and know that my hands control the face. Golf is no different.

@@jamestown4867 yeah in the full video he says hands control the face, but not by flipping which is what most people do or think they should do. He also shows the rest of the swing/body movement to ensure its consistent. Worth a watch

I really liked the full video this is from, Pete Cowan's instruction about equal and opposite grip pressure, loading the shoulders (not just turning), was one of those key moments when I realized how little I knew about the golf swing! James, are you still working on what you learned that day from Pete?
