TV Guide did a story on this show, Dick told them that a hotel clerk refused to register him and his wife, the clerk believed Dick was really married to his TV wife. I assume he was thinking Mary Tyler Moore.

Do you recall the television special Dick Van Dyke did with Mary? It was a bit before this show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The premise of the special was exactly what happened with Dick and the hotel clerk; in the special, everywhere Dick went, people kept thinking Mary Tyler Moore was really his wife in real life. Maybe that hotel experience was where the idea for the special came from...

@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles That sounds quite likely! I checked IMDB and see the special was from 1969, called Dick Van Dyke And The Other Woman, it's on yt: ua-cam.com/video/0IdFWUFZ24A/v-deo.html (it's missing some sketches tho)
Apparently this special led to CBS offering Mary her own series. Also this special came at what had been a low point in her life, as she had recently been diagnosed with diabetes.
