- In 1838, the Cherokee were forced to give up their land in the east and migrate to what is now Oklahoma. More than 4,000 died on the journey known as the Trail of Tears, but some Cherokee remained behind, hidden in the mountains of Appalachia. VOA's Susan Logue visits their modern descendants, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Sgi for saying this! Natives need to stop hating on other Natives just because of their skin color or lack thereof. I've been made fun of my whole life for turning out 'white skinned' and all of my cousins and other relatives on my moms side (who is Cherokee) turned out medium to dark skinned. We need to stop hating on each other and accept each other for how we are because we were made that way.
Osiyo! I know I'm very late response here but I'm completely with you. Majority of my relatives are also Tsalagi and I've recently seen a map of the first drawn Cherokee border lines.. they went right to Colombia SC, and here my family has lived in Greenville SC (almost as far northwest as you can go in SC before the borders were shrunk. I realize now we were always in Cherokee territory! The gov just changed our borders then named us "white" for not relocating! I appear "white" skinned while my dad is copper and mom is white though she's 1/6th Tsalagi! My face looks distinctly Cherokee and though I'm often called a liar for recalling my ancestry, what people don't realize is thyroid disease is in our gene pool! The meds for this make sun exposure restricted. I've found though I'm pale as a ghost, all it takes is 1hr laying out in the sun and instead of burning and blistering, my skin turns a slight red then by that night is already a dark brown. So I completely agree with you! We don't know how much sun exposure the person's had. My in laws (scandinavians) are looking after my baby right now as I'm going through some things, and they're actually angry their grandchild is brown. MIL keeps calling him "Buster Brown" and laughing! So sick of the skin color debates!
Miranda Fan a lot of the problem comes from blue eyed blondes with Cherokee Princess stories. They don't know their direct descendant's name etc. My relatives are on the Baker Rolls, but my direct descendant was in KY as early as 1902 where my great grandma was born. They didn't issue birth certificates in mining camps back then...

I'm Eastern Cherokee. All the members of Warriors of Ani-Kituwah are enrolled members of the tribe. I don't think you have any right telling any other tribe who is or is not a member. Back off.
I agree. Meet the real Cherokee folks. They did not live in teepees. They actually lived in longhouses that their cousins also lived in further north (the Iroquois league of sister tribes related by the same mother tongue, thank you). Only the plains Indians did live in teepees in the Dakota plains country.

I grew up near Cherokee, NC and my parents used to take me up there as a little kid in the 70's. With all due respect, it is partly the tribe's own fault non-Indians believe the Cherokee lived in teepees because they used to have guys in feathers standing next to plastic teepees who would pose for pictures for the tourists. Their old postcards were like this. They used to have a guy in feathers stand along highway and wave at drivers. Cherokee never wore feathers in real life though.
OMG ! A another lesson I learned today ! No teepees, no bows and arrows but blow darts or arrows, instead, no feathers, either ! What else will I find out !? I am age 72 and part Cherokee….All my life the movie industry and money makers fooled me so much….cartoons on t.v. …. I have been lied to ….

I miss my grandpa and my mom my grandma they were all Cherokee. But never they were not enrolled now days everyone. wants to be NDN. But back then it was hard to be they let it be said it was a long time ago son.They were the my clan dont even know how this makes me feel gettin robbed of your heritage by other people the Eastern Band Cherokee are the real deal I will love you forever always.
It was not hard to be Indian back then all whites and Asians had to do was pay the government 5 dollars on the Dawes and baker roll and wala your an Indian just like that 😆

So cool to find this vlog 13 years after if it was filmed. -- 2023 and Casino's success proves that alot more money can change things, but that is never assurance that everyone living in Cherokee is happier. Checks now are now more than double in size (twice a year)...but percentage of native employees at the Casino are half. There is little change in seeing education being more important. Hard working students can go to college for free but just the normal average (matching NC students of other races) actually will. About the only growth I witness living close-by is in Art Entrepreneurial success -- more gifts shops share real handmade goods rather than just the China-made tourist trinkets of days gone by. -- Fast Forward another 13 years and I think the upcoming NC Pot Business Trade will put another "doubling" of check size in the citizen's pockets...but still the question will be...are they happier and making better cultural decisions? -

@Forysan And unlike over here in Europe Americans can't say that Natives are too far away for them to know any better. I mean when the only historical image broadely present over here is that of the Plains people that's understandable but so close to "the real thing" and still being caught up in the stereotype is unexcusable in my eyes. Just for the records, people of South Amerca and arctic america are usually not presented as being the same as "indians" over here.

All Cherokee need to back it's own even if dude has a drop of Cherokee. If they are willing to represent and struggle as a Native then much love. Not one person would want to see their grand child set apart from their people based on being mixed. Who The fuck isn't? 1 million bucks says a DNA test will not find a "pure" blood any thing. Every Cali Native American I know has Spain, Iberian peninsula, and other European drops of blood. At least the ones I know who did DNA. Highest one I've met Has 59% Native DNA.. We didn’t just become YTE and teepees aren’t indigenous culture 🤣we had houses and huts 🛖 the natives that got here in 200-300 A.D. that are now pretending to be us which is what you see in this video are the ones that lived in teepees 🤣

Native Americans are a mixed group. Today not all people who are Native American are pure bloods. So you're likely to see Native Americans with white and black mixtures. Look at the the Shinnecock tribe of Long Island NY.
The first inhabitants here were black Indians the same people Columbus met when he got off the boat as well as the natives that came from the Bering straight I know plenty of fully flooded Aborigines and they are all in fact negroid 😂

The cherokee did not even build any mounds....mound building was a south east tribe tradition.....when the english got here..there was a huge civil war going on among the muscogee and siouans against the invading iroquis tribes. Today this war continues as the eastern band of cherokee continues to deprive the historical tribes of NC their right to recognigtion.
