She is a great singer but the appeal of this song is raw emotion, nothing flashy sounding or caring about how you sound like, it is nothing but the deepest part of human emotion being expressed. True emotion cannot be replicated, and very rarely imitated.
To the guy telling the story of this song, sure of course for them it's going to have that much more of an emotional attachment. But you make it seem like Kelly hasn't had anything like that either, listen to Irivine which was recorded on a bathroom floor and sung only once. Ever.

She is amazing, a far better singer technically speaking than Caleb Followill (KOL's lead singer), but the amount of emotion behind his recording makes his vocals just as good as hers are here. Plus he just has such a distinct voice in the first place.
