I will not be able to record videos for the next few days so I'm uploading this ahead of planned schedule. This hack was actually supposed to appear here instead of VS Castlevania but I couldn't ignore an interesting request: after all, I didn't play that version as much as NES one. But now it is time to upload this playthrough (not to mention that I am LONG overdue for at least few words about this hack). Oh, and I'll still be able to reply to your comments so if anyone is triggered enough to complain about cross subweapon too - feel free to write.
So, about the hack... It is third one made by Frederic Bouix that I play. Previous two were different versions of 'Horror of Dracula' and I have those playthroughs on my channel. This is an evolution of those hacks and the biggest thing here is altered behavior of some enemies and bosses which is enough to forgive mostly unchanged level structure. Right now, remembering all the unexpected surprises from enemies, I won't be able to give this hack a bad review. It was just too fun. I played many hacks that only had different enemy placement and unrecognizable stage design but it was always the same game: same timings, same AI, everything that I already know by heart. But here I had to invent some new tactics to be able to complete the game. Yes, some bosses do raise concern now. Dracula's low jump on second form is undodgeable if you are in its range and when you are far away - you won't be able to react to high jump in time. In original game it was easy to trigger high jump when you needed, but here staying close to Dracula is just a death wish. Also, Mummies can become quite cheap very quickly if you are not fast enough. They now spawn random enemies at high rate: crows and skulls (these can have the AI of Axe Armors, ghosts and maybe some others). Needless to say that it is possible that player will be overwhelmed soon after the start of the fight. Well, cross (and maybe axe if aimed at enemy cluster with mummy in the middle) subweapon can one shot them but if you don't have it - you'll have to depend mostly on luck.
Also, If the creator of this hack reads this... 16:42. What did I say about putting the birds there? It is cheap. If the eagle randomly appears from the left as soon as you finish ascending the stairs - you will not have time to kill it or move away and will be knocked into the pit.
Well, even with some problems this is a good hack. It actually brings some new experience instead of just having countless enemies and tedious platforming with pixel perfect jumps.

I was going to make a comment about how insanely lucky you were at the 15:22 mark, but I perish the thought of offending your most delicate sensibilities. Instead, I'd just like to know if all the secrets from the original version are still present in this hack?

I wouldn't dare to rob you of enjoyment of finding that out yourself.

@@ArekTheDragon Nah. Over the years, I've seen many of these hacks and find them to be of low quality when compared to the original. A lot of silly ideas and substandard coding.

There are some good ones, though. Original is good, yes, but after some time there is not much to do there even with RA. And hacks make the game a little different (with varying quality, of course) which gives a reason to return and try new challenges. As for the secrets - I think most of them are at the same places if their triggers are still accessible. I doubt that placing them differently was a point of this hack and I do not remember Stake editor allowing to change these.

@@ArekTheDragon The original was/is a fantastic game. It doesn't get the credit it deserves these days because of IGA and his fans. Back in the late 80's, it was more properly appreciated. The people who play it on Twitch do sure purely for speed in hopes of personal acclaim. There are many ways to play it, affording it more replay value. It comes down to whether or not the player is willing to find those ways and indulge them. I prefer technical runs and limitations because they force the player to have great knowledge of the enemies and, thus, really learn the game.
If I came across a hack that had great ideas and excellent coding, then I would definitely give it a try. I'm not opposed to hacks, but most of the ones I've seen are poorly made and don't appeal to me. There's a lot of sloppiness in them. I don't think that coding/developing is easy, but that's another reason why I prefer to stick games made by professionals.
As far as RA goes, it's become too supportive of hacks. Games deserving of sets are pushed aside in favor of yet another hack for some Mario game or whatever. The one good thing I can say about RA is that, at least for a little while, it did give me some good ideas on new ways to play a game. But that had nothing to do with hacks. It was because of the developer's ideas.

the color changing boomerangs are cool

This is one of the better hacks IMHO. Bosses need invincibility frames honestly, its a big fault of all CV1 games due to the original game allowing multiple hits hence the boomerang cheese.

    • @ArekTheDragon

They actually have s but for some reason the game disables invincibility as soon as another object is hit which is why cross and axe destroy any overlapping enemies so quickly.
