Finally. A bass demo video of someone who not only knows how to play bass and clearly enjoys the hell outta doing it, but isn't doing a demo where it's a 4 minute long slap/pop fest. A bass player and a drummer. THAT's a bass demo vid.
Brian Fassbender ... And a nice rig, too. I’m just getting back into bass after a very long layoff and it’s a painstakingly long process to find a good combination of bad/rig. Tone is subjective, but value is big for me, too (buying used is ALWAYS an option). Always loved Ibanez basses for both reasons. The amp/cab is a much harder search.
I love the way this guy talks, I don't know what kind of accent that is but it's cool as hell, "55 millimeetah" and "comfahtbly rest ye fow ahm". He's a good bass player too
I have the Ibanez SRH500 and I absolutely love it. To be honest, I was shopping for a Fender Pbass or Fender Jazz. I tried out several and just couldnt find the right fit. I kept coming back to the Ibanez SRH500 and after a few hours of a (10 minute run) I made the purchase. I was reluctant at first as I tend to play heavy handed at times. The SRH500 forced me to adjust my hand position as there is no pickup or thumb rest other than the higher part of the neck and fret board. But dont let that fool you. It is very comfortable to play and I found myself diving into the dynamics of my playing and chops. It immediately inspired a variety of riffs and runs that delivered a smooth and near upright meets fretless tone. With flatwounds the SRH500 has a unique sound. Very rich and warm. I fell in love with this bass and have a hard time putting it down once I begin playing. I love the feel over all and its light weight makes for a longer endurance when playing. The pick up system gives a great range from nice brights for the poppers and tappers out there to a thick and robust bottom for the deep tone players. A near Jaco like tone straight into the amp, I have no doubt that true bass fans would enjoy this instrument. As a Prog Rocker I was accustomed to a heavy wood and rugged instrument that could endure the relentless transitions between pick, slapping, popping and fingering. Dont let the light weight fool you. This is a sturdy instrument. I am loving the magic it has delivered and its unique sound has inspired non stop chops from delicate harmonics to thunderous low end. The Ibanez SRH500 has made me very happy and I know the Fender Lovers out thee will be like "WHAT!!??!" But I have no regrets in this purchase. Two thumbs up. BTW, the demo video here is outstanding as well. Truly represents this instrument and how it sounds.
Jack Miller An acoustic guitar amp might work for practice in your bedroom. It needs a decent bass set up otherwise. A guitar amp won’t handle the bottom end.
So refreshing to hear a guy who can actually PLAY MUSIC on a fretless bass. A nice oasis in the desert of fretless wanking videos on UA-cam. Nice job, Ibanez...and Ben. :)
Sounds absolutely great! I remember seeing you play in a school assembly back in Tawa in your final year (I was year 9 at the time) and it's wonderful to see that you've still got it :)
I just bought this bass (LOVE the guys at Chicago Music Exchange) - this is a gorgeous instrument and sounds even better. I play double bass in an orchestra and have fun mixing thing up at home. I played a few other hollow bodies in this price range and up and this instrument beats ones considerably more expensive. It has a rich sound that makes me feel at home. As Ben states, it’s well thought out and is comfortable to play all the way up to the bridge. Granted, I had been hacking around on a beginner Yamaha and a fretless 1970s Hondo, both of which are now for sale . I may have to find a band to join. Awesome job, Ben. THANKS
These are phenomenal sounding instruments! Played one recently at a music shop, and although it is a bit awkward for sitting position, due to the body depth, on a strap I can feel the meshing of acouatic sounds and SR playability is perfect! Still wish Ibanez would bring back the fretless talman intertour semi hollow... The closest any bass guitar has come to dupicating the sound of a standup bass 😩
My only real nitpick is Shepherd didn't use the same plucking techniques for both basses. With the fretted he played over the fretboard, but didn't do so with the fretless. It would have been nice to see if the fretless had a similar 'upright' sound as the fretted does. Great demo at any rate, both great sounding bass guitars.
@1:18 To me THIS sound is more like the upright sound I would prefer than the sound previous to it.There and when you talk over your playing, the sound is VERY "upright" sounding. Congrats to Ibanez and Benjamin, who should change his name to Benjamin' :^P for coming with great tones musical examples on this instrument. Playing really close to the neck or on the neck makes the sound have a "rubbery" tone a la Steve Swallow which I don't care for. It's my personal opinion, so don't bash me for it.
I just bought my first bass guitar. An acoustic-electric Ibanez. I started to think if it would be an advantage in any way to learn on a fret-less vs. a fretted. Thoughts?
Could this bass used for playing atmospheric hard rock music? I really like the sound and the feel and i'm wondering about introducing some jazzy flavour to the music we create
Benjamin or whoever is reading this. I’m not able to physically go into a store and try out a SRH or an Ibanez SRF700 4 string Fretless. What are your thoughts between the two?
The 5 string fretless sounds incredible !!! But I can't find more informations about it anywhere ... Even on Ibanez link in the description, it's not listed ... Will this model be available soon ?
he d never pass for American or British lo. Indian, or somebody who lived in New Zealand for a while. No way that guy played with Kendrick. They don't do nerds!

Brian Fassbender I’m with you Boo Boo!
Agreed. Most music store "bass player" demos show me nothing of what I want to see or hear.
I love slap and pop but its so overdone. Especially for a bass like this which is more like a double bass
havent seen someone that happy in awhile
emmanuelle caplette.
This dude's having a really good time, it's good to see actually
The opening walking bass fretted sounds the closest I ever heard to an upright. Love this guys playing.

Can I use an acoustic guitar amp with this, or does it require a dedicated bass amp?
Jack Miller An acoustic guitar amp might work for practice in your bedroom. It needs a decent bass set up otherwise. A guitar amp won’t handle the bottom end.

Six years later and this man’s playing is giving me life
We need a short scale version of these!
Sounds absolutely great! I remember seeing you play in a school assembly back in Tawa in your final year (I was year 9 at the time) and it's wonderful to see that you've still got it :)

How has this bass held up after two years? I hoping to test one out in the next month or so.
I second this question! :)
I play both of these, fretted and fretless and I love them. I have Labella white nylon tape wounds on both and they sound great!
I have the fretless 5 string. Very beautiful instrument with a wonderful sound!
So proud of these two bad ass musicians. Two of my fav musical collaborators...
Oh man that fretless growls. Definitely going to be adding this to my wish list.
Benjamin gets the most out of this Bass cuz he's got the technique and knows how to get great tone using the pickup system ,good on ye mate !!!
I wish they made the fretless in that darker finish.
best engineered and designed bass ever made IMO
love that elbow rest cutout; it reminds me of greenfield guitars.
I just found a new bassist to follow. Holy crap this dude is tasty.
Cool basses. New Ibanez stuff is really cool and innovative.
Sounds really good! Very nice playing by both musicians!
These are phenomenal sounding instruments! just seeing you having fun jamming with it makes me want to buy it man, great energy and playing
Yeah very nice sounding basses. And you play great Ben
Man, that is one happy bass player.
What a sick player! That smile on his face is probably making him play even better haha Drummer dude is also badass!!
Watched this vid so many times ibanez should put the jam session online without the talking. That would be 😎.
this guy killed it 🔥
excellent - wil take the fretless please. ..
Ohhhh that’s nice. Super warm
Ibanez please bring the fretted version back!!!! 4 and 5 string

Awesome playing and sound
Great demo. Thanks!
OMG! I'm in love!!!
I gotta get one!
Great video, great player, great bass!
Really great sounding - kudos ibanez!
The finish on the fretted is so much nicer. But that's me. I've played the fretless and it's pretty good.
another crazy jazz alien guy.
It has a nice tone to the bass, almost like upright bass.
This in a short scale would be awesome!
My dream bass)
I’d love a 4 string version of the fretless
that steve swallow tone thoooooo
This bass is so cool but I wish there was an option with a Bartolini in the neck position.
Still thinking of buying one anyways lol
Could anyone share thoughts about neck dive on this bass? I’m concerned this might be a issue given its super low weight. Thanks!
I just bought my first bass guitar. An acoustic-electric Ibanez. I started to think if it would be an advantage in any way to learn on a fret-less vs. a fretted. Thoughts?

Have a look and listen to this video! :)

That's totally up to you brother
Benjamin or whoever is reading this. I’m not able to physically go into a store and try out a SRH or an Ibanez SRF700 4 string Fretless. What are your thoughts between the two?
Stupid question but can this be used for punk surf band
Ah ha........I want the fretted one........
Great sounding bass. However, it appears Ibanez have discontinued it.
i would die for it if it were passive tho
Really wished they made this for Left Handed players.
are these made in china, indonesia or japan? How do you think this compares to the indonesian willis bass?
cây đàn đẹp quá đi.
The 5 string fretless sounds incredible !!! But I can't find more informations about it anywhere ... Even on Ibanez link in the description, it's not listed ... Will this model be available soon ?
The Woman With No Head I think it's either currently available or you can preorder it. Either way, I'm pretty sure it's for sale now.
Would have loved to hear it without it plugged into the amp.
Bass players do it with rhythm.
i'd love to heat that with black nylon strings
5 string fretted with a high C = instant Steve Swallow (I’m thinking).
Where is the pick-ups?
Looks very much like a Rob Allen
I come from nowhere and you should go there...
That guys face while playing though...
Does he talk like Christopher Walken cuz his base like is doing the same?
this guy sound australian british and north american all at the same time
Anton Zigando ha, welcome to the New Zealand accent. Although Ben has been in the US for a while so it’s changed a bit
What accent is that? In one sentence, it's American English, then in the next, it's British.
He's from New Zealand.
he d never pass for American or British lo. Indian, or somebody who lived in New Zealand for a while. No way that guy played with Kendrick. They don't do nerds!
Did he say ARYAN basses?
I thought that too,but it's Aerium,like an eagle's aerie
black nylon strings and you're all set. No need to buy a 3,500 dollar Rob Allen
