This is how Chelsea senior squads should look like, a blend of experience and you. You can build and still win trophies.
Three differences:
1) this was a multiple consecutive title winning side before the new owners took over - so there was no need for an overhaul with this squad and they had a very successful manager and director of football who stayed on after the takeover.
2) transfer fees in the women’s game are such that if you value investing in the women’s side, you can afford to buy pretty much whoever you want.
3) being such a successful side (by a distance the premier side in England and one of the top 3 in Europe), they can attract the worlds best talent who are in their prime as well as young talent. The men’s side both can’t attract players of, say, Mbappe or Haaland stature, nor could they afford them even if they wanted to come. Whereas the women’s team can attract the female equivalents (Kerr, Ramirez, Harder) and can pay what’s required in transfer fees and wages to get them.
There is a fair argument to be had that to achieve decent results short term, the club needed to invest in some experienced players with quality even if they weren’t top shelf - just so the younger talent who might be top shelf one day had some more experienced heads around to learn from and set standards. However, the club clearly decided after their first window that they didn’t want to invest money in bringing players who they assessed as not ever going to reach top shelf status and were prepared to rely on youth even if results suffered as a result in the short term.
