I've been looking at a lot of UA-cam videos of this piece and I must say I really do enjoy this one. It has the energy of the Toccata but the melodic line is so haunting. The clarity of this recording is wonderful.....nothing is lost in mud.
In my opinion the best performance of this work on UA-cam. Thank you, one can actually breath, the tempo is beautiful. This really comes alive as a Toccata.
This was by far the best performance of this piece that I have heard so far. Amazing. It gave me goosebumps! The registration in the final section was breathtaking.
That is a powerful piece of music and the organist does a fantastic job with it. It's something that you want to hear over and over again. Thank you for sharing it.
Have you heard the whole suit? Major work. And performed so well by our dear Phillepe. Brilliant but poor. Coming into his own. The truth is self-evident. CVD
@omahas9000 The player is Philippe Delacour, famous French organist. The instrument is the large Stahlhuth-Jann organ of St. Martin in Dudelange (Luxembourg). Regards.
I've played Boellmann's Toccata for years and as far as I'm concerned, Phillippe's performance is flawless and should be studied by organ students around the world as an "how to play" a toccata correctly. Thank you Phillippe. CVD
When I have listened to this played in the pedal with the 32' reeds, of course it sounds fantastic! I did here a couple of organists play it on monster manual instruments and coupled both 32' and 64' reeds! It just sounds unnerving and scary snarling down there at 8 Hz with the 64"s but I really love it!!
I'm learning this piece right now, its hard to find a version where toccata does'nt mean "plays-as-fast-as-you-can"... Anyway, this is the best of all the versions i've heard so far!
Delacour's interpretation is wonderful, if a dime fast. Bravo! I am no "fashonista", but I couldn't help but notice: Gray slacks, black shoes and blue socks! (Chuckle!) Good posting - thanks!
Impressive! My favorite interpretation of this piece! Truly inspiring! I want to learn this piece! I have the score already. =) Once more, congratulations.
I firmly agree with you....and that all of that drama on the bench can be a huge distraction from the music itself . I consider the bench persona of Olivier Latry and Jean Baptiste Robin to be very similar to Delacour.
Thank you for this explanation. I appreciate very much Dupre's teaching and I use his "method for the organ" for my own practice. Nevertheless, it seems that body expression is tolerated nowadays, even if the player is not seen by the audience. It seems to be considered as part of the playing by many people.
I was wondering a lot, how Boellmann could compose such a masterpiece in the age of 33. What kind of human and transcendent experiences he had for this piece? What did he go through? His resonance was so profound.
+Zita Menyhárt you think this is good for 33? you should listen to julius reubke's 94th psalm-and the dude DIED befor he was 25! maybe its why he had to die after he wrote that-couldnt be topped
BRILLIANT! Thanks for posting this! I liked the shot of his concentration at the beginning of the crescendo. It's always a worry point in this piece where real full concentration is required! Interesting organ. Where is it?
@fsbehne3 I agree wholeheartedly. Philippe Delacour may be under-rated on UA-cam because he just sits there and plays without any facial contortions and extravagant gestures. I too have watched it many times.
I have read trough the comments and I only want to answer the question where and what organ it is: it is the Stahlhuth organ in st Martin's church in Dudelange, Luxembourg. Excellent performance, by the way! :)
I keep coming back to listen to this. This is by far the best performance I have ever heard of this toccata. Does anyone happen to know if this exact performance is available on CD or as a (legal) digital download anywhere?
Hi! No I don't think so . . . ! There are no registration changes in that section at 2:12 but it's the moment when there is full action without enough feet to man the swell pedals as well. One can sail through the rest of the piece but the crescendo passage and with differing mechanical patterns for the fingers is the height of stress!
I played the piece after this morning's service. It is always very popular. I agree that this is one of the best performances on UA-cam.
Finally i found someone playing it the way i like it 🙂

Amazing performance. He plays the toccata like a song. Nice relation between tones. Articulation is beautiful.
J'adore ce morceau. Il est vraiment magnifique.
Maybe the best version on UA-cam.
Congratulations!!
This is a superb performance of a piece I have loved and played for years. It helps, having such a superb instrument, of course!

One of my favorite pieces, and not played lightning fast! Where was this video recorded--does anyone know?
We did record it on the magnificent Stahlhuth/Jann organ of St. Martin, Dudelange (Luxembourg). Kind regards. F. Savio (Producer).
Grandios! Weltklasse.
In my opinion, you have taken number one spot on you tube. Well down.

This falls perfectly in the "Sinister and Powerful" category of organ music. I just wish it ended in a minor key.

One expresses what they feel by thinking about what the musical line is and delivering it; not by "showing" how you feel physically.

That's right, especially at the end.
Nice!
I agree, marvelous! But, please, who is playing and may I have a few details on the organ? Thanks!
Do you belive it or not, this piece is much easier, than it looks like. It's so... logic and easy to memorize.
Kiflee are you kidding...never in a month of Sunday's could I play this...I can play the pedal part and the end section though
