Toured the ruins of Nero's crib just last month. They are trying to stabilize the underground rooms which are buried 60 feet below the park above. The wall murals are badly faded. It is huge. Thanks for this reconstruction as it is hard to visualize from the dark caves that remain the brilliant beauty of what once was. Still if you get a chance to vist the Domus Aurea on weekends only, take it. Fascinating tour.

I visited the Domus Aurea in 2000. Nero had his architects make room after room using the famous Roman arch entranceway, with a glorious central room, flanked by ten or so smaller rooms on each side. The rooms were all frescoed with scenes from Roman mythology, or repetitive, stylized floral motifs, in what must have been spectacular looking then, but showy and uninspired today. The paintings were all badly damaged and not yet restored when I visited with my tourist group. The palace today was about 30 feet underground, and the beauty and luxury and vast extent of the palace compound were hard to imagine. This video, showing the glorious statue of Apollo or Hyperion, and also the artificial lake with the Roman warship/yacht in its center, restores the Domus Aurea to its spectacular and magnificent original state. The Roman treasury nearly went bankrupt paying for this huge private obsession of Nero's. The palace makes William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon estate look like an ant hill in comparison. Really, when you think of it, it's a good reason not to vote for the next pompous and priveliged dictator the next time he rolls around. Of course, you might not have a choice in the matter, as by then it will be too late to make a difference. Down with the Neros, Mussollinis, and all their clones, Russian, British, Roman, Greek, Chinese, German, French or American!

This construction, IMO, is why Nero found himself accused of starting or at least not properly responding to the fire that gutted Rome in his reign. Its likely slander, he simply grabbed up that prime real estate after the fact, but, in terms of PR, it was a stupid move. I love the overlapping pictures of the site, the Domus, the Colesseum, and today...and knowing the Domus is still there, underneath all that modern construction is amazing.

The Trojan Horse was a sculpture made out of one of the disassembled ship to honour Poseidon on his day. Is that correct? Nero also imposed a tax of 4% on the sale of slaves that was to be remitted by the seller. Nevertheless, purchasers typically found that the tax was merely added as part of the price in a European VAT fashion. Nero also established retirement colonies of veterans in Italy. There were simply many deeds he enacted prior to 64AD that reveal a decent administrator of the Empire. Nero even attempted to promote free trade by removing all indirect taxes. However, this proved too difficult to administer due to the pervasive corruption. There is clearly the same plot to overthrow Trump from the Deep State supported by CNN, Washington Post, and the New York Times, which have shown to the world their moral corruption.
