Sorry, I'm a little confused here but did you already covered up the duality series before? I'm just wondering why make another one when you already explained it?.
The video was so old and just wasn't up to what it could be. Just like the definitive mono color series I wanted a version of those videos that did the color or combination justice
@@DiceTry meaning you had time to reflect your understanding of the color pie by rewatching your old videos and you realize that you had to reevaluate to get a better insight of the nature of the color pie and it's combinations, am I getting this right?.
Pretty much. That video was 2 years old and my understanding of the color pie paired with my ability to express it, has changed a lot and I wanted to make this video as a way to solidify that in a way I was proud of
I think the biggest outright overlap between black and white is one word: Hierarchy. While white believes in hierarchy out of duty or necessity, black see hierarchy in the world (strong v week, exploited vs exploiter etc...) and wishes to make use of it. This is probably where they are most strongly aligned, while the individual members of black and white each act for their benign or otherwise goals, they all share the belief in a strong hierarchical structure and protecting their own group within which that structure exists. Of course that's just one notion of black and white, but I think it's one that really blends them together with creating this faction that's really making two entirely different things just less, where black and white are working together rather than compromising. Some other ideas for black/white: Ambition in your station - Black's apathy and realist outlook on life expanded by white. You have limits and your group has needs. If your group goes down, you go with it, and sometimes it's just not your place to go further up. But that doesn't mean you have to stop being ambitious, it's just a matter of being realistic, it's just a matter of knowing your limits and striving to improve conditions for yourself as much as you can without metaphorically going too close to the Sun. Selfish Selflessness - I guess this is a bit in line with the Strixhaven version, but the general idea is doing good deeds and helping the community for selfish reasons. Doing it because it makes you look good, or because it helps you climb up the ranks, or because it gains you allies... The key thing here is that there is a genuine desire and attempt to help, just for self-centered motivations. Ruthlessness For Peace - White already kind of does this in its extremes, but black can really lead it to do **anything** to achieve its ideal society, using any despicable means necessary. Could have a brainwashed populace, an mad cult who believes they are bringing upon salvation, or even one of those Ultron types who believe that the only to achieve peace is to enslave/destroy humanity. The types who lost sight of the reason for their goals / ideals and now strive to simply achieve them for their own sake and at any expense.
I am usually an Orzhov player personally and it is my favorite combination. There's a lot I agree with here, but I feel the central theme I resonate with it is a lot simpler and more relatable than people see when they observe the dichotomy: "I have a noble goal in mind, but I will use any means to realize it." As an extreme example, I feel the combination is often like a certain villain in a series called Made in Abyss: Bondrewd. He was truly working to save humanity, and sincerely from the bottom of his heart had love towards all his victims, was not hypocritical and sacrificed himself when he could, had followers willing to sacrifice themselves for him, and yet inflicted possibly more undue horrific suffering than I have ever seen a villain come up with.
To be honest, I can't relate to him at all after the horrific exprienments he did to the children. I'm just glad he's gone and can't hurt anyone anymore.
"Ambition without humility will make you destroy yourself. Humility without ambition will make others destroy you" This is my main takeaway Goddamn this is like some high tier philosophy right here. Some Socrates stuff
It can also be switched around. If your ambition causes harm to others, they'll see you as a threat. If you're too humble, you can unintentionally sabotage your life.
“What is discipline, but indulgence into your own ambitions?” “Is my amorality, nothing more than a moral code not yet accepted by others?” “How is tending to a single pillar that holds a roof different than mending the broken threads of a rug? Are both not of value to a single home?” “It is one way to see where our differences meet. It is another to see what our differences create.” Another great video as always!
Well done, although I feel like some points are redundant. Like you say at 4 or 5 times that this philosophy is just a "middle way" and found in almost all of us, something I do not really agree on. I think being Black and White makes you something entirely new and not just an in-between. But with the other enemy color pairings this may be more apparent. Another thought: very interestingly Black and White are both the most religious colors and thus overlap in this area quite much
@@Kestas_X Red wants total freedom and lives in the moment so a Religion with rules and ceremonies is just not the right thing for it. Green is spiritual but in a very nature-related way meaning they don't build churches or have complex creation stories but rather see life itself as something special (I wouldn't say holy). Black does not have to be religious but if it thinks it can get power by appealing to a powerful entity (mostly demons) it will do so in a very selfish way. Also Religion allows you to easily manipulate people which is important to Black too.
There is a word for what you’re describing: “Wushi”, the absence of both Yin and Yang. However, comprehending how Wushi works is a monumental task. I don’t entirely understand it myself.
@Kestas_X Do you ever consider the fact that some individuals turn to religion out of a feeling of helplessness against fate (Black values free will, it hates the idea that it has no control over its life and Green being a fatalistic.) There's alot more to each color then you know.
Black/White is a color pair I would say is a shoe-in for the "Noble Demon" archetype a villain that while they are ambitious they have a personal code that they adhere to and they often have a noble goal such as striking down a tyrant god but trying to achieve that goal the moral way is often difficult and unlikely to succeed so going the darker route is quicker and more likely to succeed but if the heroes beat them and prove they're stronger the villain is happy to let them continue his quest.
This was wonderful,I just love hearing about philosophies especially now through the MTG color wheel, and hearing about all the ways the same colors can manifest itself into different ways of living one's life, understanding one's goals, one's being, one's own purpose(as agent smith said to neo, purpose created us),thanks again dicetry,I always enjoy listening to your breakdowns, very articulate and expressive
Thanks! I just loving talking about this stuff and how it's more than just a framing device for mtg. It's a tool we can use to think more about ourselves and the world around us
i love orzhov as a combination because theres SUCH a huge overlap in their philosophies, but also such a huge contrast in many aspects. the dichotomy that comes from taking from both of these in a contrasting way is a great way to make a compelling character white goals through black means makes an antihero, while black goals through white means makes an attractive villain. theres inherent conflict within the individual, as well as conflict with other characters who may agree with some of their valued while vehemently opposed to others. its just such rad storytelling
This much better encapsulates White/Black than your previous video did I think! This shows it much more of a spectrum, which often winds up being a compromise rather than just Black with White trappings, which is how many people view Orzhov aligned factions. I personally identify with White/Black (with some green thrown in there) from a pragmatic standpoint. I can't take care of others until I myself am taken care. And the more power and influence I get for myself, the greater capacity I have to care for others. There ought to be order and law and morality, but people for the most part should be left to their own devices. Everything in moderation, everything in balance.
It would be awesome to make a series of videos depicting a hero and a villain por each of the color combination. Congratulations from Spain, your videos are a breath of fresh air.
This has always been my favorite color combination since I started playing 6 years ago. It resonates with me for sure, but I'm not sure I can describe why.
I usually roleplay as a Lawful Evil, its the most interesting and fun alignment. The alignment of both the devil and the inquisitor trying to exorcise him
Funny that the two colors which thematically have the least in common, black and white, probably have the most in common mechanically. Lifegain, reanimation, recursion, creature removal, board wipes, graveyard hate, there are a ton of cards where you could swap them from black to white and you wouldn’t have even known they were color swapped. Compare that to a blue lightning bolt, or a green brainstorm, or a red rampant growth.
There is one thing I find pretty interesting: if you combine the virtues of the courts from the throne of eldraine set in that colour combination you get loyalty from white and persistence in black which in terms of a knight would lead to a charakter which would uphold loyalty to it´s king or the realm (or any other thing you can be loyal to) and would stop at nothing to fulfill it´s duty not even death would be able to keep them from doing what must be done (there are a lot of cards than can bring creatures back in that colours not just in black but white and black/white aswell) and I think it´s also a fitting colourpair for anti-heroes doing the right thing but using even the darkest powers they have to do so
What comes to MtG, black/white is honestly the only combination of colors that resonates with me. Things are usually much more interesting when you use both right and left hand. ☺ Thank you for the video!
Got sent here by a crazy guy who said he’d find me if I didn’t come watch it. Loved the video. Orzhov is my absolute favorite color combo and teysa Karlov shows it best to me. Not carrying if your stuff dies if it means getting a double trigger is ambitious. But also empowering it’s followers or Tokens to give them vigilance and lifelink is that tie to the white side.
One of my favorite examples of BlackWhite is Zheglov from The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed. It’s a great soviet movie that o recommend to everyone and Zheglov is a radical policeman who sees his job as being right and good, which is mostly true, but in catching criminals he is willing to cheat and is interested in “cleaning” the world almost more than in seeing it clean. Anyway to understand it better-watch the movie, it’s worth it!
I like to see it this way. As I define it, morals are the principles placed on an individual by society while ethics are the principles of said individual. There are times where they go together, and times when they don't. I believe that one can be moral without being ethical or be ethical without being moral. I also believe that the world is competitive in one form or another. There are those who will leverage virtue for the sake of power, and those who will leverage power for the sake of virtue. So, white can be moral without being ethical, and leverage virtue for the sake of power. And black can be ethical without being moral, and leverage power for the sake of virtue.
I think a succint thesis could be that whiteblack believes in order, with cracks. Firm codes that can be bent in the right self serving circumstances that don't violate the codes in an extreme way. Like speeding on the highway. They believe in the need for a speed law, but it couldn't hurt to pass it juuust a bit, they're in a rush you see.
I feel like you can find a lot of black vs. white (vs. temur) in what career one pursues (not accounting for circumstance): People closely aligned to white mana do jobs because they are helpful to society and/or are very structured in nature, people more closely aligned to black mana chase the big cash and/or a less demanding job to begin with. I, as temur, do what is fun - I could not care less for what it pays (beyond what I feel is necessary/appropriate) or how it effects society. And I would probably wither if I had to do a job just out of some form of obligation. Of course there are a lot more angles to this, but I feel like those are the most relevant to this video and my perspective on it.
My interpretation of Heroic Orzhov is Batman : Black has indomitable will power and will use any method, White cares about people and has unbreakable principles
The problem with that example is that Batman is vastly different depending on the author. The mainstream understanding is that batman is very choosy about his methods. He wouldn't sacrifice those close to him or really anyone for his mission and even goes so far as to refrain from killing in the hope that a villain could be redeemed - even in extreme cases such as the Joker who obviously will always be a villain, Batman stays true to his code because doing whatever necessary would be him giving up who he is, it would be joining his gallery of villains, especially the likes of the league of shadows.
To me the combination of black and white brings to mind people who are willing to break the law and go against the system, but do so to help the group. The Bolsheviks, the Assassins, the civil rights movement, the pirates of the Caribbean. Pretty much every small group that fights against the rest of society, be it for better or for worse
Interesting how if you add green to orzhov, you get abzan. The color quiz thing you posted, I get 8.9% white, 9.3% red, 22.9%, 25.6% black, and 33.2% blue. That said, I really resonate with "if I help those close to me succeed, I succeed".
Just my perspective White wants what is best for everyone and believes in laws, order, and restrictions to achieve it. Black wants what is best for itself. I also think black is no holds barred. It does things at all costs. So to me, BW can be one of two things; 1) Selfishness with restraint. 2) The greater good at all costs. I think the latter shows up in the Legion of Dusk and Orzov. They want domination (black) for the greater good (white) and will break the rules (black; vampirism and sacrifice) to get it. The rules keep others in line, but they are willing to do what is necessary. In this way WB is the combination of zealotry.
Frollo from the hunchback of notre dame. Don't let the passion and hellfire trick you, he has no red in him as nothing about him is direct or unristricted, Frollo is the darkest of humanity wrapped in the brightest vestments.
I see black and white as two sides of the same coin that is Society. Ambition is required to get anything done, and Order is required to make sure that ambitions don’t destroy each other (or themselves).
Wonderful how you took your time with all this. And how nuanced your videos are. The others I watched said White-Black is tribalism and left it at that. But this is very helpful for a DnD campaign I plan on running, that is based in part on this color pairing
White/Black is the combination of power politics. Your goal is to maximise power, and deny it to others. This is the prince by Machiavelli, this is the concepts which drive conquest. It is autonomy in its most extreme "I decide the rules that I will follow".
I always felt the song Creeping Death was the most orzhov song/theme ever. About the Egypt plague of the angel of death aiding in killing the first born (son?) of every family. That's death and taxes for ya.
Im exklusivly playing black white vampire Ixalan. So yeah, kind of in a biased position here, but I wouldn't say it covers my ethnics, because if it should, it'd be playing Boros.
Whenever I see white black, I think Vampires, Milling, Death&Taxes, stealing life from opponents. Terrifying combo to go up against when you're playing Red/Blue because unlike other combinations, you can't do anything much against it, it isn't a draw war like with Green or Green/combo or who drops their combo first with Red, it is they just got out their enchantments, I got nothing to deal with it, unless I can get my combo out as fast as possible, I will lose as my opponent is now 32 life and I am at 9 by turn 3.
Despite how opposite black and white may seem, to me it somehow makes perfect sense. It's a kind of dangerous hypocrisy and outright lie I find in many who hold themselves in high regard
It does resonate with me, though I agree and would uphold most of white's ideals, I'm still more of a black person. I mix the emphasis on morals, structure, law, and, peace with my black desire to exist as I please, to be undisturbed, and thrive with the rest of society. I'm still blue at my core.
Dice try i need of your help: i maked to much search on mtg and seems to me that something is missing but 6,5 colors is to much and i starting to forgot what a have learned because i can't se the logic i am in somewhere between simic and boros and that is chaos. The mtg is incomplete. You already know the 16p they for me are like mtg but with more info. I recommend you to do a big search because i know that you wanna like. Meetings from brazil.
incredible as it may seem, there is very little W/B in Anarchism, which tends more towards W/R/G or U/R/G, black would only make sense in terms of self-determination and autonomy, but Anarchism is against power over others, so it wouldn't make sense
@@gabrielmauricio6414 anarchism is against unjust heirarchies* there would still be hierarchies in an anarchist society (like a captain of a ship ect) *irl anarchist theory, idk about magic

Just my perspective
White wants what is best for everyone and believes in laws, order, and restrictions to achieve it.
Black wants what is best for itself. I also think black is no holds barred. It does things at all costs.
So to me, BW can be one of two things;
1) Selfishness with restraint.
White-black I have always seen as lawful evil. White being lawful sometime oppressive order. Black being meanness and pragmatism.
A dialectical analysis of MGT is not what I was expecting to see today
Nice analysis!!
I see black and white as two sides of the same coin that is Society. Ambition is required to get anything done, and Order is required to make sure that ambitions don’t destroy each other (or themselves).
Dicetry im so anxious to that series
I just fell in love with this combination, orzhov to the death
Wonderful how you took your time with all this. And how nuanced your videos are. The others I watched said White-Black is tribalism and left it at that.
But this is very helpful for a DnD campaign I plan on running, that is based in part on this color pairing
White/Black is the combination of power politics. Your goal is to maximise power, and deny it to others. This is the prince by Machiavelli, this is the concepts which drive conquest. It is autonomy in its most extreme "I decide the rules that I will follow".
I tend to identify with Boro and Jeskia more. If I was a little more aggressive in nature I would say even a tendency to lean into Mardu.
I always felt the song Creeping Death was the most orzhov song/theme ever. About the Egypt plague of the angel of death aiding in killing the first born (son?) of every family. That's death and taxes for ya.
6:42 so every, in this case, Black + White is every single politician.
I'm trying to put together a white/black deck. My first self deck. Wish me luck. 😅

3:36 isn't freedom, but don't infringe on other a Red-White/Boros thing?
Yes but is a little orzhov too and he talked a littlem
.*
Freedom is also important to black. Maybe not in the same way. It's more having its autonomy, to be Unrestricted

Despite how opposite black and white may seem, to me it somehow makes perfect sense. It's a kind of dangerous hypocrisy and outright lie I find in many who hold themselves in high regard
Could you do White/Red
I plan on covering all of the color pairs in this way
What is the name of the piano song?
Beethoven, Moonlight Sonata

3:43 Already this is sounding like relativism and that in fact white and black don't make any sense together.
Ok you have described, depending on interpretation, fascism or anarchism...
incredible as it may seem, there is very little W/B in Anarchism, which tends more towards W/R/G or U/R/G, black would only make sense in terms of self-determination and autonomy, but Anarchism is against power over others, so it wouldn't make sense
@@gabrielmauricio6414 anarchism is against unjust heirarchies* there would still be hierarchies in an anarchist society (like a captain of a ship ect)

Gg my guy I honestly believe that these collers function best black Is selfish which is the color that is selfless basically back and weight is as defined functions best as a gray area I'd like to think that you can bye for power however to bye for power only for yourself at the expense of others is morally wrong however what if you could be ambitious and aim for a high position but wight on the other hand forces morality onto black basically a society that benefits those in power must give back to those in power basically you can be king if you take on the responsibilities to protect your subjects at any cost so long as you benefit the Peaple any act that is morally gray wether its through murder resurrection or renamtion however it dose so with the conservation asking itself is this situation dire enough ti waernt such an act if so then proceed it will use moral codes of conduxt ferveantly but will leave room to do what it pleases without casuing unnesasary harm to others there is a middle ground however it ebbs and flows during prosperous times it would lean more on white but peaple can still be ambitious and aim for what it wants but during times of improveshed and faimin or plauge it may consider raising the dead to tend to the soil for the dead never tire likckly using only convicted crimanals to do so normmaly whight would hate this but if it did this during a time of ermangency then it might be willing to acapt the fact they will starve unless they use what resorces they have and black hasbthe ablity to bring the dead to life if enacted only on crimalnls and those comited a nesscaery sacerfice inoicence will get cauight uo in it but it cant be helped all it can do is minmize the dmg
