Designing Environment Art in Gaming - Super Art Power Hour Ep. 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 кві 2022
- Nathan Rogers is a Senior 3D Environment Artist at Riot Games. He has worked on Summoner's Rift for League of Legends, contributing such pillars as the Baron Pit and the surrounding walls into which one flashes (with F). He also previously served as the primary environment texture artist on VALORANT.
So strap up and sit down for Episode 2 of the Power Hour, as Nate demonstrates his hand-painting technique and waxes poetic on the role environment plays in storytelling and bringing game worlds to life--but also the importance of balancing all that with the clear need for sub-machine-gun-toting teddy bears.
To see more of Nate's work, check him out at Artstation.com/Murms
The Riot Games Super Art Power Hour is a monthly long-form educational segment spotlighting super art and super artists at Riot.

Is she his mother?
One day I will make my mom this proud too!!
awwwwwwwwwww
The bob ross moment was priceless
Love this kind of behind the scenes look into game development, only better when its a studio i have loved for 10+ years.
Absolutely love this series! Despite knowing some of the tools and pipelines already, I love getting into the minds of artists like Nate and Thomas and learning more about their thought process. It definitely helps me think more critically when creating assets. I literally can't wait for next month's segment!
this is inspiring as someone who's also colorblind like me, as I've developed an insecurity on the color values of my 3d texturing work that led me to relying on my teammates in regards to them providing a color pallette for my work
Yay! A new episode! Thank you so much!!! ❤
Loving these series! Can’t wait to see animation
This whole series is great, can't wait for the next episode
Im in a 3D course with a friend, im technically minded so the modern workflow with all the maps and the baking and troubleshooting comes mostly naturally to me. But one of my friends struggled greatly because hes not technical at all, he came from traditional and digital painting. He has been thinking about trying 3d coat but was afraid of learning another software and have to troubleshoot more.
After watching this video i convinced him to give it a try, he took to it like fish to water, instead of having to ask me question every day, he can now bump out stunning art just grinding away at 3D coat.
Thanks Nathan for the inspiration.
Currently at college studying 3D environment art, and holy shit is this cool to see!
Love this. Definitely going to try this tool out. I've done a lot of texturing but it was all UV maps in Blender and this seems like it would save a significant amount of time.
Thank you for this series
Thank you so much for these!!
Thank you so much Riot!
I can relate how wonderful 3DCoat is. Especially when it comes to handpainting ♥
Lovely to listen to you explaining your process, thank you for your work
Loving this series! Super helpful and inspiring
Absolutely love these videos, very inspiring.
It's truly amazing that he can create all those cool stuffs despite being color-blind.
Nice tutorial Mista Rogers! good to see you showing off them skills bro!
I love these videos so much, really is a great resource for artists out there
So great! Please have more tutorials like this on riots environment art!
Really nice one! I aspire the create games one day too and even though I am more on the programming side it is very useful to know the jobs of the rest of the team! I wonder if you will ever upload another Episode with programming...
honestly, you can create a workshop where riot artists teach people and then try to scout them afterwards.
I didn't know Robert Pattinson worked as an enviroment artist too
Fantastic stuff! Thank you 👍
So cool to see the process!
NO ONE WANTED TO LOSE A FEW YEARS OF WORK AND YOU HAVE JUST RECEIVED 4 YEARS OF WORK !!

For anyone watching theres a replace geometry button in the file dropdown, so that way you can keep all the layers and it will just swap the geo.

damn, my arm would 100% fall off doing this. do many professional handpainting artists use this sort of setup?
Last ep i spent most of my time wondering how hot Caitlyn is
This ep i am fully committed and ready to learn
Thanks for mentioning that you're color blind. I'm red green blind as well, so it is encouraging to hear that someone in the industry is color blind as well. :)
Dear Riot Games and the Developers,
Hey there! The chance of any of you actually reading my comment is pretty low as low as how a certain game did. Most hate comments and bad reviews of your game was made entirely by children under 16 years old. It is also mostly from 2 most toxic country ever. You have your right to sue or file a lawsuit against a game that obviously tried to take "inspiration" from your game. I know how much lost you guys have to endure all this time because of a copycat and now even the hate from the most "innocent" players of a certain game. Some even threaten you guys by hacking into your server and stuff. But in the end, you guys did what you guys must do. I just wanna say, you guys make a good choice
Respect
God if only I wasn't colorblind this would be like a dream job 😭

I have a question.im a big fan of lol i play the game since its release beta. Recently for 3 4 years i have decided to switch to linux and im very happy. Does riot games officials plan on developing lol client for Linux? Is it possible to play on linux. I have an old pc with windows on it that i use only for league. Linux is very stable and reliable os and i wonder if riot games are ever going to develop linux client like steam for example.
hey riot what the fair

Fun fact: Everyone comming to this channel when heard that mlbb will ban

It was nice of Robert Pattinson to take time off from acting to make this video.
0:00 what if riot games put a game mode 1 vs 1 ranked will be too easy to rank up
Alergi fakta player emel

Can we get same type of video from Valorant art team
🙋🏻♂️
second
I wish that the view of his screen wasnt potato quality. Specially when the camera view of him is so crisp. Its jarring, looks like a recording from 2005 UA-cam.
Key takeaways:
- Create globally first, then detail.
- Nature doesn't have solid colors, but colors with patches of random hue.
- Punch the shape for readability.
- Step back to prevent doing something unimportant.
- Communicate with game designers, audio guys, etc. to make sure the art matches the intended game design and development resource. Embed one person from another team to yours.
- Make the environment "lived in", as if it has its own history.
- Environment should be less attractive than the characters. Use dimmer colors compared to characters or VFX's colors.
When your pc can’t even run the textures
Dont demand moonton!
Valorand mobire When will you go to the store?
First!
