    I think it's interesting how you talked about getting into other languages and cultures at an early age and the benefits that come from the exposure. I'm watching with my one-year-old daughter while she has a snack. Turns out she likes you two! Her mother thinks I'm strange for this, but I've been trying to expose her to as many different kinds of people as I can. My daughter just looooves music, so it's been super easy thanks to UA-cam. One of her favorite songs is the new Angst by Rammstein. She also loves people. She's afraid of no one who looks different, gives everyone smiles and likes to wave, even at you! I hope she ends up having my appreciation and interest in all languages and cultures.
    Also, I had spent two years in S. Korea when I was in the Army. I had so much fun getting out and spending time with the locals, learning the culture and some of the language. I can confirm they have several different ways of doing and saying pretty much everything which depends on the ages and relationships of the people involved. It sounded complicated when learning it, but it actually made sense when put into practice.
    I got to show my wife how much fun it can be getting to know people abroad. She had never been out of the U.S. before she met me. We got married on a cruise ship before setting sail on a one week trip to the Bahamas. The ship itself was an awesome experience. We got to chat with a lot of the crew, most of who were from other countries. For instance, our photographer was a Filipino lady named Florida. True story. She was very good at her job, and she was a cool person who really enjoyed talking about where she was from. The real fun came about when we got to the Bahamas. We don't have a ton of money, so we didn't do any of the excursions they sold on the ship. Like swimming with the dolphins and stuff like that. Instead, and I was very adamant about this to my wife, I convinced her to take the time to go walking around and interact with the locals. We ended up having more fun than we would have standing around in lines waiting our turns at something excessively expensive. We took a cool tour of Nassau, went on a horse-drawn carriage ride, and mingled with a lot of local people. We learned a lot about the history of the Bahamas, the daily lives of the locals, and even some of the language. Yes, they speak English, but they have their own terms for things. For instance, they call visitors "googies". I can't remember if the term is for just white visitors or for everyone, though. It's been six years and my memory isn't very good, so I'm not entirely sure anymore. It was fun and we'd love to go back. But, you know, covid. I'd love to take a trip out to Japan for an extended time, too. But, you know, covid. Maybe after everyone forgets about it, like how everyone forgot about SARS.

    As a francophone Canadian i can tell you the rules at school has changed quite a few times over the decades. As i, myself repeated 3rd grade of elementary for totally flunking English (it was a new language to me as it was not readily available where i was residing (this is before cable TV); prior to moving to a big city) and grades were marked in percentages.
    Yeah those Starbucks flavour work well with the "English" Canadians but in our province; the tell-tale sign of approval is looking at the amount of stores they keep closing year after year. Pumpkin is not a fruit that we are accustomed to during holiday season (we adore fresh cranberries [unsweetened]), mint either, cinnamon isn't either. We are fans of Vanilla (the real one from the bean not the artificial one), nutmeg, the subtle flavour of maple syrup (not the fake stuff). They try to cater to the mass population's taste and Quebec only represents 23% so they have difficulties trying to offer singular flavours for a particular population (same problem also for France and other French influenced palate around the globe).
    As I have been around multiple nationalities growing up in my city (and while travelling) beside learning the language of these new people; I have realised that with my love of foods I was able to interact with ease without linguistic knowledge. But having and forcing one "official" language upon a society will eventually cause the disappearance of historical, regional homogeneous
    Steven's explanation in regards to the interacting with other cultures while using English (or any other) as the medium is similar to our (mine) own reality: as we are a French province.
    As expressed a few years ago by Toula Drimonis as she stopped at a Café;
    "...At the table next to me, i could hear two businessmen effortlessly switching impeccable French and English while I was speaking to my mom in Greek. Suddenly a woman walked by on her phone, "Mira, mira, te lo dije..." I could hear her engaged in a heated conversation in Spanish, as her voice faded away. I smiled. Because it's a routine, so normal, so wonderful that these multiple languages, these arbitrary sounds we make to communicate with each other, are part of my daily Montréal soundtrack. This mélange, this linguistic and cultural smorgasbord, this jambalaya of flavours is one of the things I love about my city and what makes me feel most at home. The main course is still FRENCH, but the appetizers are a little bit of everything. And that makes life a bit delicious for me."

    I live in Italy, the grades go from 1 to 10 in public schools, private schools usually use letters. U can fail a grade but from high school you can either fail a grade, be promoted(?) or tested at the end of August usually. The test is given to those people that didn't reach the requirements for the next year by a little. Not sure how it works in other countries tho.
    Edit: the final decision is decided by the teachers of the student in the end tho, so you have to hope they don't fail you if you you're close to fail.

    Within a country, it can also be different. I’m from the Philippines and my report card from elementary school to high school was written in percentages (100 is A+ and 75 is failing.) And true enough, my mother did ask “Why, what happened?” when I got a score lower than 90. (A or 3.7 in whatever system you’re used to.) 😂 But when I got to uni, it became 1.0 (equivalent to A+ or 4.0), 1.25, 1.75, down to 5.0. 3.0 is passing. 4.0 is dropped. So, students drop to avoid a 5.0. Since they calculate numerical averages x number of units and a big fat 5 on a subject worth a lot of units would be devastating. But they have to retake that subject which takes more time. Plus there’s a limit on the amount of time it takes for you to finish your course. 😅

    Love you two and your reactions... the double subtexts on every video I've seen is a bit unprofessional though. You might want to fix that. BUT KEEP THEM COMING!!

    In my country Algeria we also had report card, once i lied about a mark i got and i hoped that at the end of the year the overall mark will be good enough to cover my track. and one my parent was like hey didn't you told us that you get A in this test why it is C. lol
    Thanks to how well my parents did how they insisted on my education. I'm now full time Professor teaching at university. My God "Allah" bless their souls in heaven

    5:20 - back home in Bulgaria our grade system is from 2 to 6, where 2 is a fail, 6 excellent. And then we have special grades - 1 for cheating, and 7 for perfect. I have seen one singular 7 (wasn't me :D, I was too stupid to get a high score like that :D ), and it was in university, as one classmate did a test so well it broke the professor's grading method :D
    My parents were not very strict on school, as long as I passed. Then between 7th and 8th grade my brain started working, and from 8th grade onwards I was a pretty good student in term of grades. In high school I had subjects where I didn't need to study, as I understood plenty from class, so I still got 6s on the tests :)
