Thanks for the honest video and detail showing how to remove the thermostat from the housing and the gasket as well. I love that you show how to re-use the housing when every other video says you need to replace it. Replace the gasket if you see that it is cracked - replace the housing if you must - otherwise just follow this video and replace the thermostat itself. This allowed me to buy the coolant , the gasket and the thermostat for under $40. Amazing!
Super easy to follow and had lots of good tips. For bleeding air out there is a Philips screw on the thermostat housing you can see on top which you can crack while the car is running, super easy barely an inconvenience!
I replaced my thermostat on my 2011 Journey at 88k miles. Your video is spot on! I also replaced my serpentine belt while I was in there too. Thanks for sharing!
DON'T FORGET TO BLEED THE AIR,,,simply after adding fluid to the antifreeze bottle turn your heat on high and then start your engine and then loosen the black screw on top of the thermostat till it lets fluid and air bubbles out ,then tighten and wait a few minutes then loosen the screw and wait till it quits spitting the air bubbles out and then tighten repeat till no more air bubbles
Thank you for this video. I used it to swap my thermostat housing in my 2012 Journey. That bottom 10mm bolt was a pain to get to with my big hands and having no hose clamp pliers on hand made it near impossible for me to do attach it back lol.
Thank you for posting these videos. I too have a 2012 Journey and am so glad you are doing this. I am also having a heating problem and was wondering if you can help or suggest what I can do. The heat is not balanced on my car. The front passenger side is way cooler then the driver side. I measured the temperature and the driver side vents is running at 50°C but the passenger side is at approximately at 35°C. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Now that I've replaced the windshield washer nozzles and hose it looks like I'm going to be replacing the thermostat. My car is not warming up enough and staying warm right now. I just have to wait til our first winter storm passes. We're getting up to 30cm of snow and the winds are brutal. Changed the windshield washer parts in pouring rain yesterday lol
@@ArchesMechanic ok I will do that. Everything that comes off the dang vehicle seems to crumble so I will be replacing things as I go along. Once Covid vaccines are available and night school starts up, I think I'm going to take a mechanics course!
@@meadowlane637 I’m currently doing mine online. A lot of it is theory. If you’re in a good location there’s a lot of good visual aids. It also helps to have factory info. Identifix is a good resource but it’s $150/mo

I followed your instructions and everything went well. The air worked great last night. Then I drove it today. The air conditioning drop to low and the vehicle overheated. I didn't know I had to open the value at the top to release air while I filled the reservoir back up. Just got back from seeing my mechanic. They got all the air out and no overheating. Drove home without a problem. Mechanic said I could have warped or damaged the head gasket and then the vehicle would have been a write off. Now I'm confused because we looked it up and Google says it can be replaced. Will you let me know which is true just for my reference? Had a minor panic attack when he said write off. Although I would be quite happy getting a pedal bike with baskets for groceries lol
I think it will be ok. I had the head gaskets go on mine recently 120,000 miles and it was $1500 to repair at a dealership. I would have done it myself but I didn’t have the time.
@@ArchesMechanic ok thanks. My mechanic said 5000 to replace which seemed high so I hoped it and the price was around 1500 to 2000. I'm in Ontario Canada. But that's a big price gap. I'll keep an eye on it and fingers crossed that everything is OK.
Gjoe33088 any ac issues will not be related to the thermostat. More the compressor or ac charge level. Check the simple stuff first. Fuses for the compressor. Plugs near compressor. I recommend taking ac jobs to a reputable shop since they can detect leaks and inform you.
Hello Arches mechanic thank you for sharing videos for repair and maintenance for dodge journey 2012 i saved tons of money for following your videos. I have question for you 2012 dodge journey rear left passenger door handle is broken and the child safety lock is on now I can’t open it from outside neither inside. Is their any i can open that door could you please do a video for that. Thank you so much
@@donaldbato7609 Quick question. Is the handle itself broken or is it just flopping around. Reason I ask is I am testing a few things to see which way I need to go with the video.
I apologize for the late response. The handle is not broken, its still in one piece I think the cable is off or something because I can’t feel the latch when I’m pulling the handle to open.
Donald Bato figured it out. Video will be up Saturday or Sunday. In the meantime you can pick up a wire for fishing electrical wires through walls. I used a 1ft piece of mine to get this done. Glad to help and hope you enjoy the video!
Hi there. Nice video. I'm getting ready to replace the t-stat in my girlfriends 2011 2.4. I just want to verify that you're working on a 3.6. I'm having some trouble finding 2.4 specific data but I'd like to fix the issue today or tmo. I bought one t-stat but thinking there may be two. Thanks.
HEy There... I doubt I'm going get a reply before I have to head to town for my parts, but in the event you happen to see this now ( 3:09pm Tuesday May5th ) I need to know something. I've changed tons of thermostats over the years, but when I called the parts store to see if they had one, they told me there were "2" thermostats to replace ? I have a 12 journey 4 cylinder but haven't heard of 2 thermostats... Any info or advice ?? thanks a ton great video for helping. Cheers from B.C. Canada west coast
Timothy Waters I haven’t heard of two thermostats on that vehicle. I would assume there were two, one for each motor but I cannot attest as I have the 3.6. Sorry
Hey Thanks for the reply.. After much arguing with the parts department ( Dumb idea lol ) there are actually 2 different thermostats believe it ot not. My 2012 is a 2.4 and as your looking head on at the motor, the thermostats housing is on the right ( drives side actually ) The larger one goes into the head and then there's a smaller one that goes inside the plastic housing. I punched in 2011 instead of 2012 thermostat locations and replacements and that's when I finally found it. Now I have to make the half hour drive back to town go get the other one lol. Thanks for your reply though
Wow! Awesome video. I’m going to be doing this on my mother in laws, Dodge Journey this weekend. Her Check engine light is on. The car will take awhile to get up to normal operating temperature. Bad T STAT?
Alan Ramirez the engine light probably won’t be cause by a stuck thermostat however taking a long time to reach temp usually indicated a bad tstat. There also might be air in the heater core.

My 2015 check engine light come on with code p0128 can it be fixed replacing the thermostat ??? It is a dodge journey
Possibly. It could be stuck open which in some cases would allow the coolant to not reach optimal temp. It could also be the temp sensor.

Does this repair also correct any AC issues?

Arches Mechanic Its more lack of heat than AC but both should be addressed
Gjoe33088 it might also be a blend door problem. Have you or do you hear clicking under the passenger side dashboard?
Arches Mechanic that’s a negative no clicking sound
My journey has a leakin and when I fill it up it drinks it so fast and the car overheats what’s the reason
Alfredo Beltran possibly leaking radiator. I’ve replaced mine before due to a leak. Could be a loose hose.
