@@rjjcms1 unfortunately. This is what Britannia does as a Company. Buys buildings and then run the to the ground. Then buys another building and also run it to the ground.
0 money spent on refurbishing or fixing problems.
All staff get minimum wage, and even managers only get 50pence above minimum wage.
Having had worked for the company for over 6 years I can see why no one even bothers to do a good job. It’s not worth the hassle from their point of view.
Mr.Langston the owner of the company would rather sit there counting money and pay someone else to just listen to complaints, but not do anything about the issues and carry on taking your money.
In Britannia’s Eyes, if there’s a problem they are better off ignoring it or giving customers a complimentary bottle of wine worth 90pence. If the customer still isn’t happy, we’ll it it what it is and they are invited to leave. Someone else will come and spend money there instead.
If you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay out with your friends and don’t care for quality and just want a filthy bed to crash on, go for it. But I would definitely not even bother to think about bringing my family to any Britannia hotel. It is Shameful.

I was surprised to see this video. I worked at the hotel in 1969 while I was on a gap year from Canada. It was quite nice back then but I might have had a hand in it's decline. I was hired as a waiter and I had no experience in silver service. The first meal I served was spaghetti to the son of a very forgiving lady. It did not go well as more of the pasta ended up on the table than on the plate. I got a little better after some training but I doubt if I ever attained a realistic level of proficiency. My apologies to Mr. Lamb the maitre d and all the other staff. We had some pretty high profile guests back then to. Among them were Graham Green and the old time actress Hermione Gingold. She was pushing 70 and was wearing a mini skirt and looked quite good. My apologies to a fine old hotel if I had any hand in it's downfall.

The fire alarms were all hanging off, apparently being upgraded but nobody was working on them. The beds were uncomfortable and the room itself grubby. @@NA-gf1zy The problem with these grand Victorian hotels is that the "carriage trade" no longer goes to British seaside resorts. Their modern equivalents are on luxury yachts or stopping off at Monaco and the like. Those are the people whose ancestors turned up in Rolls-Royces and had several servants accompanying by train. Now they go a lot further away by private jet and helicopter.
If Britannia spent millions restoring the buildings, they would never be able to get enough high payers to recoup the investment. Instead they are "sweating their assets:" in other words running them into the ground.
A few more decades of allowing water to get through the roof and their hotels will have to be demolished, whether or not there are any "historic building" considerations. Then the land will be sold off for development.

@@NA-gf1zy Britannia are firmly at the bottom of the market, having won "worst hotel chain" from Which? magazine seven years in a row. At that end of the market, customers may be suspicious of quality if what they want is "cheapest possible." They may be looking to rent rooms out by the hour, like the late lamented Jonathan's Hotel in Birmingham or St Enoch's in Glasgow.
As regards demolishing a listed building once they have milked it as much as they can, what an absentee landlord does is to leave it empty and unmaintained for a few years (ignoring demands from the council for repairs) until it becomes dangerous. They may also cut back on security to encourage break-ins, casual sleepers, drug users and (ideally) fire-setters.

We were given a room in a converted elevator shaft, directly opposite the main ballroom which first had a wedding reception in it, till 9pm and then came the Stag-do! Think I got to sleep about 3 am! We thought we had a skylight above us as there were no windows, until we turned the main light on and discovered this was the it! The problem with larger hotels is that they lack the personal touch - and if they do have this, is then they are likely to be VERY expensive.
Hotels like the Britannia are rapidly falling out of favour now, as people prefer air b n b, small 'boutique' hotels, or self catering. Even traditional B & B's (which are gaining in popularity again) are more preferential to most people. I don't see this situation changing anytime soon. It's likely to get even worse in future.
Unless they're posh, then large hotels, rather like old style department stores are not really in fashion anymore. Changing times.
No one wants to stay in a hotel that is reminiscent of 'Fawlty Towers' or one that looks like it houses asylum seekers.....even if it doesn't. People are much more demanding now than than they were 20 or 30 years ago. And they can post ferocious comments on sites like TripAdvisor.
If a hotel can't get even the basics right (clean bedsheets, clean bathroom, clean looking curtains with no holes or rips in them, and a stain free carpet) then you have to ask what's the point?

If a proper cleaning program was in place the rooms would be miles better and if basic maintenance was kept on top of the hotel again would look miles better and thus inturn attract repeat custom. Instead years of neglect and not spending means they end up in a dire circle.

Funnily enough we stayed at this hotel about six weeks ago..it was ok for the price (we went on a coach holiday) location was excellent, we'd seen reviews so we were a bit cagey to start with but we needn't have worried. It wasn't the Ritz but it was ok. We were out most of the day, the lounge in the evening was comfortable - what really pissed us off was there was no loo on the ground floor near the bar and lounge, you either went down two floors to a basement where there was a public lav (entry code needed to open it) or you had to go to your room. Not ideal. Room was ok, food ok too, room clean enough, and if you think we're easy to please you don't know my Mrs.

This hotel has recently had a major fire and now doubtful it will ever reopen. By the looks of this, it is a *good* thing! Looked a half-a-century dated just walking past it outside in my home town.

They must have gone down hill over the years. I stay in one in St Leonards 10-12 years ago and it was lovely. Slept in like a mini suite. Receptionist was really helpful and breakfast was fresh cooked of a menu.

The Royal Albion is another example of a hotel that was built to high standards orignially intended to cater for a 'discerning clientele'. Much has changed in it's lifetime and the owners can't afford to fund a major refurbishment. And then, who would stay there at the prices that would have to be charged to recoupe the investment - ? Same as the Grand in Scarborough.
    Sad, but that's reality.

Those sockets are standard UK sockets, they are a most likely connected to a lower capacity circuit, they are designed for lamps to be plugged into which was probably why they were originally there. You could overload the circuit by plugging say a hair dryer into them, hence the different design.
I have also stayed in this hotel but it was hit and miss. The room was OK but the rest of it was shabby, that said it was cheap.

I love the Palace Hotel in Buxton where I go to meet up with family. The room is cheap but wifi, parking and food all cost a fortune. It's clean enough for me, but I've never been fussy, but I will look very hard later this month when I go! It's a few minutes walk down a very steep hill to the high street where there are several places for breakfast. I love the grand building and the fabulous staircase. We had an excellent pre-Christmas cream tea one year in their enormous lounge; plenty of space for the then tiny children to run about. The only other occupants of the normally rarely used lounge were enchanted by the 18-month-olds' antics with the Xmas paper. And their (well-supervised) efforts to conquer that astonishing staircase!

After saying that the [5 amp] lighting sockets were not the usual sort [they are the usual sort for 5 amp lighting circuits], the next shot shows a standard three-pin socket. Anything else made up or exaggerated for the sake of a good report? (That said, the reputation of Britannia Hotels is so widely known that anyone who books into one deserves the service they'll get.)

If a company can’t afford or can’t be bothered to invest in its hotels to make them as they should be in the 21st century, they shouldn’t be in the business. And it’s a chain! Utter BS.
