  • We dive into one of the greatest LEADERS of the HARD BOP era~!
His presence on HArd Bop lps always seemed to bring a serious tone, confrontational towards INJUSTICE!
Yet as a sideman, he proved to be, one of the most grooving players in the game!!!

I'm 20, just starting my jazz collection. Clear to me now, why i was so hooked by one of his records. This video got me crying for the beauty of his music and tragety at the same time

Props for wearing a Pittsburgh Crawfords shirt. As for Pittsburgh during that time, Margaret Bourke White, the Life magazine photographer, said that Pittsburgh was Hell with the lid off.

This man was my uncle who passed when I was very young r.i.p. my mom would tell me a story of the only time I actually met him of me sitting in his lap and him singing a line to me and me singing it back to him and him telling her " grace this is your musician " it make me think of them both when I think of the story

Well done. Being from the Pittsburgh area we would often say you could smell Pittsburgh before you could see it.

Hi Dan . I just wrote a long comment about Sony Clark, his piano playing on Blue Note and the disgust about the pro-slavery Rock carving, but I had a PC crash and I lost it all. I'm sorry I cant write it up again but I think you guess that I'm a huge fan of Sonny.

Awesome content. Sonny Clark was one of my first loves of jazz piano. As tasteful as it gets with one of the best touches in the game.

I heard Somethin’ Special by chance and it got me into Jazz. I challenge anyone not to tap when they spin Sonny’s Crib, completely agree a 5 star affair! Sad history but I’m glad you’re making people aware of it. Thank you for putting this together.

What a comprehensive video! I have many of these Sonny Clark records, but your commentary on how his lifestyle and experiences shaped his music can definitely be heard. He always had such an edge on records, whether it’s on his own or he is a sideman. Have you heard him on Jackie McLean’s Tippin the Scales? Great stuff if you haven’t! Loving your channel! I need to hone in on some of your skills for my jazz videos!

Hey Dan! I must admit that I don't know Sonny's output that well apart from Cool Struttin' and a handful of records on which he played as a sideman. But you totally "sold" me on him with the very nice biographical and historical setup you painted to introduce him to us (I really like that aspect of your channel and it's a big reason why I come back to it so often). I do know much better Hampton Hawes (which I adore!) but I didn't know anything about that uncanny story you told. Anyway, you made me want to go fill that gap in my collection by starting to hunt down some of Sonny's albums, so thank you for that! (Sonny's Crib might well be the first one!). BTW Kayne doesn't do shit for me either!!! (actually none of those modern yappers do!). And if you do an episode on Dexter Gordon, you'll make a happy man here (just recently finished his Biography Sophisticated Giant written by his wife Maxine and it's great, quite a life that man led!) Merci mon ami!
