Jackie is a whole solar system in the universe of jazz. He's almost unknown, but if one day you find his music and enjoy it I guess it's because you have reached a certain level in jazz listening.
I absolutely love Jackie. I love Sonny too. But there seems to be a rare sort of unique fan base for Jackie McLean. He is astonishing. He is just as important as Sonny Rollins or anybody. I have to say- it feels cool and unique to be a fan of this guy. My little world. Im a kid again. I can explore and feel and dream with my Jackie McLean records. I think he was beautiful and so real! ♥ My love to Mr. Rollins as well. A strong shoulder to lean on- so to speak. Treasures they are. Both of them.
As a young fella i was blessed to have met Jackie (and eventually his family) right about the time that he came to Hartford and I would sit mesmerized at some of the stories that he would tell about being and playing with many jazz giants. He also reached out in an effort to help me on a personal basis for which I will always be grateful. I often frequented the original Artists Collective on Clark St that he and his wife Dollie put together that was a very positive thing in a community that definitely needed it. May you rest in peace Jackie and as great a musician as you were, you will always be much more to me. GOD bless!!!
